With tongue in cheek, but sorta not really: can anyone else envision the day when top athletes at places like Alabama don’t want to go pro because they will be taking a pay cut, so the NCAA or various colleges begin to explore ways to extend years of eligibility . . .

I couldn't help but notice the lack participation in this thread from the 2 or 3 posters that think this will be good for us.

I say, wait and see.
One of the highest potential earners is a female gymnast at LSU.
Another is a wrestler at Minnesota.
Another is a basketball player at Tennessee State.
Another pair, are female twin hoopsters at Fresno State.
One of the biggest football winners could be the QB at UNC.
While those may be more exceptions, it does speak to the potential to get big buck no matter where you are.
I think the routine funneling of money through boosters to generic athletes based upon school/sport (e.g. Bama QB) has always been happening and always will. So that doesn't necessarily change the pecking order.
Memphis stories on NIL have been scarce but I know there are a few basketball and football guys that have small deals.
There's still a lot to play out in this.

The people that push for this (paying players) are often sports journalists. Ya know, the people who make money off sports drama. The more confusing and cluttered it gets, the more they can discuss, write and rake in the money from viewers like us.

Everyone thinks this NIL is exclusively for the top tier athlete. That's not necessarily true. This opens the door for all athletes, not just the superstars.

Brady White could have made a lot of NIL money during his time at Memphis - probably more than he'll make as a professional football player.

Local advertising companies can look for a popular, charismatic college athlete to put in adds or commercials. That player doesn't necessarily have to be the star of the team, just someone that does well on camera, and that the public will recognize. Give them some good copy and that could open up an acting career for a 2nd tier athlete. Universities should start pushing acting classes to athletes for this reason.

Joey Magnifico.... Imagine what an advertising company could have done with the "Joey caught it" tagline...

I haven't heard much on jersey sales. That is where all starters on the team can make some money. Imagine how much Deangelo would have made on jersey sales, as I still see #20 jerseys. Same for Keith #24 and Penny #25. Even players like offensive linemen, and basketball backups would sell jerseys. Heck, Nathaniel Root would have had quite a few sales back in the day. (Roooooot!) Curious how that will go down.

The university contracts with one apparel company. And the university typically keeps a tight grip on apparel distribution licensing. I think most laws/rules will not allow athletes to compete with their university for apparel sales through a different company. So will these deals continue to get negotiated through the university, with athletes finally getting a cut for their jersey sales? Or will athletes indeed be able to license and sell their own jerseys?

The devil is in the details here (As always). But NFL players get money for jersey sells, but due to the collective bargaining agreement between league (owners) and NFLPA (players), the players make a very small percentage of profit.

Edit: I say that to say, this will continue to evolve. People with more money and resources will eventually take back control. Players are kids with no knowledge or resources. I'll bet players now will profit more than any other generation. It's like knobbing up...on top, on bottom, on top, on bottom.......

Golden rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.

for the upper echelon P5 schools, maybe not...for the G5...hell yes.

How do you coach a 19 year old kid that has a million bucks? I'm glad I am not a coach.

Depends on the kid...

But many of these kids continue to grind to get that check...Not sure how they respond if they get the check early.

Dear Mr. Hot Shot QB,

There's blocked, and there slowing'em down.

The first one costs 50k, the second one is free.

Signed; your offensive line.

again, y'all acting like this is the first time an $EC QB has gotten paid

Shoot, Bama paid $200k for a DT, and that was over 20 years ago. I seem to recall the going rate for Means to just take a school visit was $5k.

I do not necessarily think NIL is a net positive for Memphis but as you've seen from my other replies I also don't think it is the apocalypse that you believe is coming.

When it comes to the level of players we've been recruiting in football, I just don't think we are as overmatched as you're suggesting. Sure, some of those schools have more and richer boosters than we do but those people aren't going to write blank checks for 3-star athletes who won't put their programs into elite status. And there's certainly a limit to how much a business will pay some barely-known athlete to peddle their restaurant or roofing company to a localized market. Whoever is footing the bill, there has to be an economic or at least emotional payback.

This is $1M for a likely first round QB who's going to play for the highest profile program in the land. I think the pay gradient down from these kinds of athletes to the ones we've been in the running for will be steep. Plus there will be some quality players who stand to make more in local endorsements as a star at Memphis than from being in relative anonymity at an upper-tier P5 school, or at one of our G5 rivals in larger markets (Houston, SMU, Temple, etc.) that draw relatively limited local interest.

It will create two types of separation; one good, one bad. The first, is one is good. Us along with Cincinnati and UCF, are going to separate ourselves from the rest of the G5. The second is bad. The top half of the P5 is going to separate from the bottom half of the P5, and another tier to us, Cincinnati and UCF.

It depends on what you are striving for. For programs a tier below us such as Boise, SMU, San Diego State, Houston, and USF, it will give them a leg up on everyone else. For us, Cincinnati and UCF, it is a bad thing as things stand.

IF Texas and Oklahoma leave, it will be great for us. In that case, more than likely, us Cincinnati, UCF and Houston will go to the Big 12.
