I'm reading this as a man who knows his confernce is DOA

If they had any D2 upgrade prospects would he be doing this right now?

I have a strong feeling the new commissioner will be the last.

Me too.

I wonder if the NEC and Big South are ready to pounce

RE: MEAC commissioner retiring
The SCSU President recently replaced the Howard President as the MEAC Presidential Chair, but SCSU terminated him within a couple weeks for unrelated reasons. New chair is now the NCCU President.

RE: MEAC commissioner retiring
Would this be the best way forward, assuming Howard goes to the NEC?

Using the MEAC shell to create a non football Big South, maybe something like the UAC, while the Big South absorbs the MEAC football schools

It would work out nicely with two 9 to 10 team Mid-Atlantic conferences

United Athletic Conference - Baseball/Soccer 2 team sports
Coppin St - BB
UMES - BB
Radford - BB, Soccer
Longwood - BB, Soccer
High Point - BB, Soccer
UNCA - BB, Soccer
USC Upstate - BB, Soccer
Winthrop - BB, Soccer
Presbyterian - BB, Soccer

Big South Conference
Delaware St - FB
Morgan St - FB
Norfolk St - FB
Hampton - FB
Campbell - FB
NC A&T - FB
NC Central - FB
Gardner Webb - FB
SC State - FB
Charleston Southern - FB

The Big South schools like their constricted VA/NC/SC footprint. Schools like Winthrop, Presbyterian, & UNCA won’t want to give up the likes of Campbell, Hampton, Gardner-Webb, & NC A&T for UMES & Coppin St. And schools like Campbell, Gardner-Webb, & Charleston Southern probably don’t want to give up Winthrop & UNCA for Morgan St & Delaware St.

All true, BUT the Big South needs more football members

This solution sets up a stable long term geographically friendly conferences for all

He was fired! "Retiring" is simply a nice way to put it. Dennis Thomas had the choice of retirement or be fired.

Firing seems the most likely, but it could be battle fatigue.

I'm not telling you what "it could be" I'm telling you what it is! I've worked in HBCU athletics for almost a decade now. Played and graduated from an HBCU. I know the temperature in the room, trust me.

RE: MEAC commissioner retiring
I remember reading an idea about using the MEAC shell for a new FBS conference if it were to fold.

Basically a way for an East coast league to form and get NCAA auto bids for the Olympic sports by joining the MEAC and changing the name.

It was an interesting idea and quite aggressive. But possible I guess.

Yeah, both things you mention - firing and battle fatigue - seem possible. Though of course they are also likely related, in that the obvious factor at play here, the MEAC losing all of its most valuable brand schools save for Howard the last couple of years - could have led to either, or both.

RE: MEAC commissioner retiring
It will be interesting what they do. I think the best way forward in what I assume will be a Howard less MEAC will be to work with the Big South so the football and non football schools can have stable, geographically friendly long term homes. However, that would require the conference abandoning it's HBCU identity, do it may be a no go.

I do hope they are all able to find stable long term solutions

In pro sports, the semi-serious joke is "well you can't fire the players, so you fire the coach." Not that the coach / commissioner was really the problem, or that a new coach / comissioner is going to do any better, but "you gotta do something", and this is --something you can do.

Generally, if you want to fire a commissioner, you don't let that person stay in their job for another six months.

He's been three a long time though and seems to be well liked.

Giving him a graceful exit makes sense. Firing him creates a sense of the sky really is falling

He has a no win job.

There’s no HBCU teams to rebuild with.

If you rebuild with non-HBCUs, assuming you can find some who want to join, you tick off the HBCU traditionalists

If you don’t rebuild, you’re overseeing a conference that’s on the verge of dissolution.

This comes out and within 24 hours, Texas and Oklahoma talking to the SEC makes the news. No such thing as coincidences.
