RE: 2021 ESPN College Gameday Season Thread
Announced during the Clemson/Georgia game: They're going to Ames, IA for the Battle of Iowa.

The FOX Big Noon Saturday pregame show said during Penn State/Wisconsin they will be on site at Columbus for Oregon/Ohio State. I'm not 100% sure but I think they said they will be at Oklahoma for the 50th Anniversary of the "Game of the Century" (Nebraska/Oklahoma) on Sept. 18.

FOX really gets a lot of mileage out of "Big Noon" and "Big Noon Saturday". I believe the words were on the screen during the game yesterday and Gus Johnson said the phrase several times during the broadcast. I expect that to continue.

I'm not sure anyone affiliated at Ohio State doesn't like the emphasis on noon kickoffs but someone at their SB Nation blog doesn't like them.

https://www.landgrantholyland.com/2021/5...n-michigan

Best line of the post: "I understand that there are going to be noon kickoffs for Ohio State. It makes perfect sense for the Buckeyes to take on mediocre teams like Akron, Illinois, or Michigan at noon."

RE: 2021 ESPN College Gameday Season Thread
I can't remember this happening often. Today's Gameday picker was Ashton Kutcher who is a fan of IOWA, not Iowa State! His Wikipedia page showed he went to Iowa. Does ISU not have anyone notable that they could have brought in? Seems pretty embarrassing to go to Iowa State and have the celebrity picker pick the other team, especially the biggest rival, and cements the big dog/little dog status in the state. This would be like having Emmitt Smith being the guest picker in Tallahassee, Tom Brady in East Lansing, or Danny Manning in Manhattan, KS. And to add insult to injury, Lee Corso picked Iowa.

Anyone think Gameday won't be at Gainesville (Alabama/Florida) next week? Yeah, Nebraska/Oklahoma is next week but there's a better chance that Illinois will beat Oklahoma than Nebraska will.

After today's big win, Oregon would be deserving of a Gameday appearance. Too bad all of their home opponents aren't too good. Oregon-UCLA on Oct. 23 might start to be looking good. UCLA surprisingly has only hosted Gameday once, in 1998! It probably won't be the ABC SNF game because USC-Notre Dame is on NBC in prime time. If FOX gets Oregon-UCLA, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the Big Nooner.

Thank you Crayton for the praise.

Mild upset for Sept. 18. Gameday heading to my alma mater, Penn State (Auburn at Penn State). Obvious plug to Saturday Night Football. Didn't want to help CBS out.

Some signage from my alma mater Penn State's hosting of Gameday:

https://www.espn.com/college-football/st...penn-state

Best slam of the visitor IMO:

And we picked fun of Michigan.

During the ESPN picks, I heard boos for Notre Dame and Alabama when their games were being discussed (although I wonder if the 'Bama boos were for the Auburn fans coming for the game). Ohio State's game wasn't being picked. Why did Penn State go after Michigan and not after their bigger rival? Were they chicken? I mean it was the perfect week to go after them! I would've held up a sign "Oregon 35, Ohio State 28"! Obviously you are going to pick on the team you're playing but why Michigan and not Ohio State?

Next stop Chicago (Notre Dame/Wisconsin)! Another week Gameday and FOX will be at the same location. I had picked it before the season started.

RE: 2021 ESPN College Gameday Season Thread
Potential Next Stops:

Oct. 2:
Manhattan, KS (Oklahoma-Kansas State). KSU has beaten Oklahoma the last two years including last year in Norman. KSU is currently undefeated but has to go to Oklahoma State Saturday. Might help if ABC gets the game. The last time Gameday was in Manhattan was 2000!

Notre Dame, IN (Cincinnati-Notre Dame): Cincinnati beat Indiana and has a bye next week. Notre Dame is still unbeaten and has a big game vs. Wisconsin in Chicago. Win and it's a battle of two unbeatens. But of course it's NBC's game.

Tuscaloosa, AL (Mississippi-Alabama): Mississippi's undefeated and has a bye next week. Unless Alabama loses to Southern Mississippi, this will be a battle of undefeated teams. Likely will be on CBS though.

If ABC doesn't get Okl/KSU or if KSU loses, Gameday's options are limited. I predicted ABC's SNF game if Okl/SNF is on FOX would be Ind/PSU or they would burn their Pac 12 game this week. Maybe they could go to their ESPN SEC game site if they don't want to go to a CBS, NBC, or FOX site.

Oct. 9:

Dallas (Oklahoma-Texas): ABC or ESPN will host the game for the first time since 2017 (it's been on FOX the last three years). But Texas already has a loss and plays annual thorn in their side TCU on Oct. 2 the week before (not to mention Okie has KSU the week before as well).

Iowa City (Penn State-Iowa): Penn State plays Villanova and Indiana at home before then, Iowa hosts Colorado State and travels to Maryland. Decent chance both are unbeaten. Gameday hasn't been to Iowa City since 2006. But the FOX networks have reserved the game.

College Station (Alabama-Texas A&M): After last year's season, a very anticipated SEC battle and could this be the game 'Bama goes down? Most likely both teams will be undefeated. With CBS getting the top two picks, it's a lock to be a CBS game.

Bit of a surprise next week.

Gameday going to Athens, Ga:
https://twitter.com/CollegeGameDay/statu...2263756800

It might be more of a complement to Arkansas than Georgia.

Interesting that the game is a noon start on ESPN. I'm assuming Kirk Herbstreit will call that game then. Maybe instead of being on the Gameday set he will be in the broadcast booth. Or Kirk will be on set and then have to rush over to the booth in the changeover. Or could he still go to the SNF game (Penn State)? ESPN was probably not expecting Arkansas to beat Texas A&M or they would've scheduled that game as the SEC's prime time game instead of their noon game. Ironically, Florida/Kentucky and Texas A&M were held for a 6 day hold and UF/UK was given the prime time slot instead (actually 6pm). Auburn/LSU is a special 9pm ET start although my guess is they'll delay the start until when Florida/Kentucky ends, within reason (if they go to OT, they'll just kick off the Tiger Battle).

Meanwhile, FOX's road show continues. They return to Madison on Oct. 2 and head to Iowa City on Oct. 9 even though Penn State-Iowa is scheduled for a 4pm ET start. If Penn State and Iowa both win, Gameday has to be in Iowa City on Oct. 9 as well (again, last time was 2006). Meanwhile, after Texas A&M lost you can probably rule out College Station for Oct. 9.

IMHO, Michigan engenders the most hate across the entire Big Ten. Ohio State is generally simple “sports hate” - people don’t like them because they’re better at football so much of the time, but it doesn’t go beyond that sports-focused animosity. You’ll see the same with Alabama in the SEC, Clemson in the ACC, etc.

Michigan is deeper than that - they don’t just think they’re better than you at sports, but that they’re actually better than you as *people* (see the obsession with hiring a “Michigan Man” as coach). They think they’re peers with Harvard academically on top of being a football power. That’s simply way more grating because it’s in your face in real life employment situations where Michigan alums are everywhere in places like NYC and Chicago.

Imagine a school with the elite private school attitude of Duke and Notre Dame, but it’s actually a huge public school with 40,000 students with tons of actual alums (not just T-shirt fans) in every major market in the country. That’s Michigan.

I thought Cincinnati-Notre Dame.

And Lane Kiffin thought of it as a slight.

Certainly it can be a complement if you're the visitor for Gameday but you also become the butt of jokes (see Auburn pics). I can only imagine signs that Alabama fans could come up with about Ole Miss.

RE: 2021 ESPN College Gameday Season Thread
Iowa held up their end of the bargain by winning. If Penn State wins, I can't see how ESPN can't go to Iowa City next week with two undefeated teams. Texas already has a loss (Oklahoma-Texas in Dallas is the other legit option and ABC has the game while FOX has PSU-Iowa). And Iowa hasn't hosted Gameday since 2006 so that's an argument in their favor.

Oct. 16?

If Cincinnati wins, I'd go there (they host UCF). Cincinnati has never hosted Gameday.

If Arkansas beats Georgia or maybe Mississippi next week, Arkansas hosts Auburn. Arkansas last hosted in 2006.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Guess Arkansas is settling for the Southwest, not Southeast Conference championship:

Current SWC standings:04-cheers

W L to play
Arkansas 3 - 0 x 0
Texas 3 - 1 x 1
SMU 1 - 0 x 1
Texas Tech 1 - 1 x 2
Houston 1 - 1 x 1
Baylor 0 - 0 x 3
Texas A&M 0 - 1 x 0
TCU 0 - 2 x 2
Rice 0 - 3 x 0

Most of the schools did play a lot of Texas/SWC teams ooc, but not A&M.

A&M played Kent, Colorado and New Mexico ooc but will play 1 Texas team, Prairie View. SMU did play North Texas and Abilene Christian ooc in addition to TCU. Tech also played Stephen F. Austin in addition to Houston. Baylor had Texas St. and Texas Southern.

Could see them going to East Lansing for the UMich/Sparty game w/ 2 undefeated's. I don't see any of their opponents as L's till that game, but that may be because I live in MI & am told they don't lose unless it's to each other or Ohio St.

In fairness to Michigan - and I hate being fair to them because they are the football school I "hate" the most - sometimes arrogance is earned, you are as good as you think you are.

In this case, Michigan is about as good as it thinks it is. It's a top-rated academic institution and equally powerful and successful athletic institution. IMO it clearly tops the B1G when you combine both categories. Ohio State is only feared as an athletic machine because that's what it is. Northwestern is respected as an academic institution because that's what it is. Michigan is both.

In that combination of athletic and academic excellence, its only peers are schools like Notre Dame, USC and Texas. Maybe North Carolina if you let their basketball substitute for football.

And of those, and setting UNC aside, only Texas is a big state flagship, operating at the same scale as Michigan.

That's why Texas engenders the same kind of "hate" as well, LOL.

The rare moments when Stanford wins I feel the same way about them, including last year when they won the women's basketball national championship. Of course that could be I have Berkeley alums in my family. It's one thing when one of these private like state universities that accept around 30% of applicants do well, what's Stanford's acceptance rate? In Fall 2020, it was 5%. Their undergrad enrollment in fall 2020 was 6,366 compared to Berkeley's 30,980. I'm not saying Berkeley isn't selective but compared to Stanford they, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, etc aren't even close in terms of admissions rates.
