I'll believe it when it actually occurs. But why bring the 2017 NFL season into this? It only occurred because the results of the week 16 games combined in such a way to that the NFL couldn't pick one game to showcase on SNF.

would love them to move the semifinals then to Mon 1/2 with 1 at noon and other at 8:30pm. sandwiched around the Rose Bowl. This would give them the chance to do that.

This is how it should have always been done to get the CFP semifinal games onto NYD annually.

It also sets the precedent for any expanded playoff in the future. Things are a whole lot easier to schedule at least 2 playoff games (whether they're quarterfinals or semifinals) on NYD if only the Rose Bowl is locked in on that date as opposed to both the Rose and Sugar.

Eh, it was scheduled for primetime, Monday, January 2nd due to NYD being on a Sunday, meaning next year's Sugar Bowl would conflict with Monday Night Football. This is a one-off to make it work for ESPN and nothing else.

Plus, I'm sure the New Orleans tourism industry would much rather have the Sugar Bowl on New Years Eve. I went to this years' game with my daughter - and it was such a late kickoff that we didn't leave Houston until Saturday morning (on January 1st). We drove to New Orleans and got a reasonably priced hotel room for just the one night. But I guarantee the room would have been double that (or more) if the game was on New Years Eve, and not New Years Day.

No. New Orleans gets other tourists on NYE and the week after Christmas. They don't need the football game. I'm sure they would prefer spreading things out and having it NYD.

to me the 1 thing I would do is force the Rose Bowl to start instead of 5pm et more like 4:30pm et. That way they could do it 1230/430/830.
That would interfere with the Tournament of Roses Parade. It will never happen. The parade is a lot of why the game is inflexible on moving dates.

I was at the parade a long time ago (2002). I can't believe 30 minutes would be that big of a deal.

I like it. Back in the day, I recall the Sugar Bowl was sometimes played on New Year's Eve. IMO that is just as cool as NYD.
