The 2 that stand out to me would be University of California - Merced and University of British Columbia. Probably still less than a 15% chance.

I don't venture in NAIA but after a very brief review:

British Columbia
California - Merced
Texas A&M - San Antonio
Victoria
Xavier (LA)

The only current NAIA members that could make the jump in thext 30 years would be someone like Oklahoma City or TAMU-SA. And besides, UBC and Victoria can only go to Division II unless Division I voted to allow Canadian schools join.

Big 10 Conference was looking at schools like University of Toronto to join them since they are AAU, and is in line with them.

British Columbia does fit in with the PAC 10.

Please show any source of evidence that this was even a thought, even from a drunk intern at the Big Ten offices.

And back to the original question before the hijack from the delusional one..... None.

There was quite a bit of message board chatter and even articles by known bloggers on the possibility of the B1G adding Toronto. Nothing formal was ever leaked as far as I can remember. It was limited to the online community almost exclusively because of AAU.

Merced has no interest in D1. Their stated goal is D2, as of 2019, and they still don't have a specific timeline for that.

Before opening the thread, these were the exact 2 schools that popped in my mind. Oklahoma City explored a moveup around 2007 or so, and IMO would be successful if they ever committed.

Some of the NAIA schools in Texas (Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, UH-Victoria, the afore-mentioned TAMU school, Huston-Tillotson) could be future members of the Southland Conference. Our Lady of the Lake played quite a few D1 teams in men's basketball this year, and actually beat Sun Belt Champ Texas State.

Texas A&M-San Antonio is a possibility, and only a possibility. They still need to build out their program. It is a new university on the underserved south side of San Antonio. It would compete for fans, donations, and attention with the Spurs, UT-San Antonio, and Incarnate Word.

Oklahoma City has explored a return to Division I, and has decided to stay in NAIA. Some of their NAIA rivals have moved to Division II, but OCU has not done that. In addition, they lost both their men's and women's basketball coaches to higher-paying nearby D-II schools before last season. Here is an article from 2008. The same athletic director is still there....the AP story is dated, but the financial concerns are the same.

https://www.news-star.com/article/200804.../304269976

OCU did decide to move back to D-I in 2006, but later changed their mind once the NBA came to OKC in 2008.

RE: Which NAIA school(s) would be the most likely to become NCAA D-1 in next 25 years?
UC-Merced doesn't have enough sports to qualify for D3 or D2. The last sport added was in 2013. They still need a men's sport and a women's sport which must be a Spring sport. The current sports are basketball, cross country, soccer, and volleyball for both genders. Talk about them joining D2 has been going on for years but UCM is moving at a snail's pace to make that happen.

This thread is just going to be kindling for a DavidSt Fantasy Smorgasbord.

As said earlier, D1 does not allow Canadian members. Until they do, any talk of Toronto to the Big10 or British Columbia to the PAC12 is pure fantasy.

TAMU-SA, because of their growth plan, the state that they're in and the conferences they could join.

Everyone else is a super long shot.

UC Merced could grow enough to be big enough. There's a lot of land that could be bought in Merced. But there's not enough of a fan base. Merced is sort of a bedroom community for the East Bay area, and all those people are actually fans of teams in the Bay Area.

UBC could go if indeed the NCAA ever allows it. They are big and high academic. Beautiful campus in a great city. I don't think the NCAA would allow it though.

I don't think OK City is a prospect. Since the NBA came to town there's not been as much interest. Too small a school and too small an endowment.

Georgia Gwinnett, now up to 12k students. It will take a facilities campaign to get a basketball arena.

Bellevue, NE. About 10k students but only 28m endowment.

All of these are much better prospects for D2 than D1, but seem to be very comfortable playing for championships in the NAIA. But given 25 years? A lot could change.

Does D-I have a minimum enrollment or % living on-campus? I don’t think so WRT enrollment , but maybe dorm residential rate

I've never heard of such a requirement, but I use it as an indication of whether they can pay the cost to be D1. Either by an affordable student fee or from the school's general existing wealth.

Now that Tennessee has taken over Martin Methodist and rebranded as UT Southern, I wonder how long they'll stay in the NAIA?

30 years is too long of a time frame to gauge well.

Cal Baptist was a pretty small NAIA, albeit gaining success in athletics, 15 years ago. They applied to D2, and almost immediately began the move to D1.

Going back 15 years before even applying to D2 is too much of a jump to have predicted with any actual prediction ability. It would have been nothing more than throwing out random names.

Regarding Toronto, it sounds like some ignorant people.were merely scanning thru the list of AAU schools (not even knowing Canadian schools were also listed) noticed Toronto is not far away geographically.

The original version of that statement first appeared in Nov 2006. So it's been at least 15 years and they still don't qualify to join D2 and not showing any signs of being able to make the move any time soon. This doesn't give much confidence that they will make it to D1 in 25 years. I've been watching UCM for several years hoping they will join D2. UC Merced did just open in 2005 so that's a good reason to give them a little bit of a break.
