SEC Commish Greg Sankey: Games will not be rescheduled due to Covid-19
It is possible teams will be force to forfeit ....From the Article

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey revealed surprising news on Monday. He announced the conference will not reschedule games if a team has to cancel because of COVID. Instead, the teams forced to cancel will have to forfeit the game.

As of Monday, just six of the 14 SEC football teams have reached the 80-percent vaccination threshold. Teams may be further incentivized to get the shot(s), knowing forfeited games are now on the table.

“SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announces games will not be rescheduled this fall due to COVID,” wrote Brody Miller of The Athletic, via Twitter. “It is up to teams to get vaccinated. If they don’t have enough, they may have to forfeit. Six of 14 SEC teams have reached the 80% vaccination threshold, he said.”

I would like to see The ACC follow this as well.

This

You still have minimum roster limits and at this point no need to cancel any games this season

I can’t say that I’m thrilled with the fact that the conference office is pushing a trial gene therapy that hasn’t undergone the FDA’s routine rigorous testing on a bunch of 18-22 year olds.

At the same time, I’m glad they plan on playing the games as regularly scheduled.

I agree - I'd like to see all conferences do the same. If that's not enough incentive to get vaccinated, then nothing will be for these athletes.

Many of these same 18 to 22 year olds are willing to ingest just about anything they can if they think it gives them a competitive advantage. Most of those supplements are way more harmful than helpful.

It's been given to over 1 billion people. Dozens of published studies have tracked the side effects on population subsamples, many of them for over a year. How much more testing do you want?

It's not any more gene therapy than any other vaccine and it's not it has undergone rigorous testing - look for full approval very soon.

Really. Just compare the percentage of deaths with those who took the vaccine against the percentage of deaths without vaccination. A recent health official stated we are seeing a 'health crisis among the unvaccinated'.

Formal FDA approval for the vaccines may help. On the other hand, the practical evidence seems overwhelming. Sankey is not going to get pushback from university presidents…this is not a risky stance to take.

The corollary to this is that the protocols for a team not being able to play should be dramatically relaxed. If an athlete tests positive before a game, he alone should have to sit it out, it shouldn't be a situation where everyone he's been in contact with is out too.

That was just ridiculous, and with the vaccines now, there's zero justification for it.

Most of the COVID protocols were set by bureaucrats, not scientists. So their purpose is CYA, not "getting the science right."

Quarantine/testing guidelines need to change for vaccinated players/coaches then. MLB is failing miserably in this regard.

I believe that the NFL loosened its mask, testing and quarantine standards for teams with > 80% vaccination rates. It’s a high threshold, but vaccination is the best method to achieving a reliable schedule.

The Indiana University students who went to court to block this semester’s mandatory vaccination requirement for in-person students, lost their case in the first round. The judge supported the University’s broader public health concerns.

Overall, these seem like reasonable developments promoting vaccines with a tolerance for some exceptions. No reason why P5 won’t follow these precedents.

FWIW, I don't mind mandatory vaccination policies for students at colleges. Colleges already have vaccination mandates for other diseases. And I'm a Trump-supporter who thinks that our country lost its mind over the virus. But this just doesn't seem like an issue worth going to the barricades over.

That said, I think it ridiculous what happened to NC State at the CWS. To me, there should be no "tracing" aspect to whether players are eligible to play in a game or not. The only players who should possibly be impacted are those who test positive, not anyone else around them.

And vaccinated players should be eligible to play even if they test positive as well, as Fauci says that vaccinated people are very unlikely to spread the virus to others.

600k people dying and one of the highest death rates in the first world definitely means someone lost their mind

I agree. No need to wipe out a position group because a bunch of vaccinated 19 year olds with negative tests were around another 19 year old who tested positive. Only hold out the positive players.

About 2.2 million Americans die every year before the virus, and we didn't shut down large swathes of social and economic life for a year (and in some cases, ongoing) trying to save them. IMO, we went crazy with mass lockdowns, etc. Heck, most Americans probably don't even know that 2.2 million a year die, much less think we should shut down social life trying to save them.

Probably because there isn't 24-7 breathless media hype/saturation coverage about those deaths, like there has been about the virus.

I approve everyone doing so.

I had my two Pfizer shots in April.

Everyone should, so that we can eradicate Covid-19 like we did polio, smallpox, Yellow Fever, etc..
