Houston at #11 and Boise at #7 are both ridiculous. Whoever made this lost definitely came from a place where no one uses spices. Every nice restaurant in Boise essentially tastes exactly the same

I agree wholeheartedly. I only referred to barbeque since it's what others were mentioning. To your point about Summer Avenue, Lotus is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant of all time--preferable to me than Lilly's Cafe, Tan Dinh, and others in New Orleans. (See, I've been out.)

Yep. I have lived in both cities. New Orleans is better.

There are many fine restaurants in New Orleans. The Creole cooking of New Orleans is the distinctive native cuisine. It differs from the Cajun cooking of French Louisana (south and west of the swamp). I tend to avoid Cajun food in New Orleans and Creole food in French Louisana.

In New Orleans, Creole has always meant a melange of styles in an attempt to find the finest or best dishes. The food like the people is a mix of French, Spanish, Native American, and African. Cajun is down home cooking. Hearty but mainly it reflects it Acadian French roots.

Those are distinctive styles that are attributed to Louisiana. Cajun of course is pure gator coon ass, but there were Creole up and down the Mississippi Delta.

The thing about Memphis cooking that is distinctive to this city is our slow cooked pork style dry rub. It seems this is more appetizing to a Saturday football crowd than ettoufee (creole or cajun) or jambalaya (creole of french, west african, spanish influence and a bit reminiscent of paella). I believe a tailgate with any of these dishes might cause you to miss the opening kick-off!

Totally agree with you if it's a possible tailgate situation. But if there's a one or two night stay, NO is my easily my favorite. There is no shame for Memphis to be #2 on this list. I'm more pissed that Nashville is now rising on these social media polls because of their "eclectic" places, bars and new raunts downtown.

Yeah, Nashville rises on these polls just on the sheer volume of tourist or maybe their visitors bureau pays to appear there. I've been in and out of Nashville most of my life including having lived there and never found anything special about the food. Every chain restaurant you could think of but no signature dishes, not really known for any food until something called "Nashville Hot Chicken" started being sold in a KFC commercial five or six years ago.

My impression is the poll is not measuring game day food. It's the entire food scene in a particular town, regardless of football, basketball, etc.

And I agree with those who say NOLA is better than Memphis. I LOVE Memphis, and the Tigers, and BBQ, but when it comes to food, it's hard to beat the variety in NOLA.

Gumbo, jambalaya, beignets, red beans & rice, crawfish boils, boudin, muffalettas, po boys, king cakes, pralines, BBQ shrimp, oysters, bread pudding, snowballs, etc.

I think we should be second.

Agree that we've got much more than BBQ. Visitors come to spend a week and they just rave about the food. I have family that just moved to town, and they can't believe all the different quality choices other than BBQ.

I do need some new Summer Ave recommendations for lunch, now that I'm back in the office. My rotation of Elwoods, Central BBQ, Tops needs 1-2 more options...

Although I love Cajun/creole, NO has even more - Andreas is incredible Italian, there are great fine dining places, great breakfast and more.

Summer is full of hidden gems. It’s the best food street in the city.

Jerusalem cafe next to Charlie’s is great. The taco place that is now in a parking lot on the south facing side of summer (can’t remember the name) is incredible and stays busy. Edit: just remembered it’s Tacos nganas

Lotus is good Vietnamese but be prepared to wait for your food.

Food scenes are overall - not just chefs IMHO. Fine dining and mom and pops should be part of the entire consideration.

They do have a nice downtown area and a real local food scene there. It's been a few years since I've been, and I don't recall any names. But it was nice.

Boise is super “hip” and has been for several years. Houston is just a massive city - 2.3 million people in the city itself (not including surrounding area) so there’s bound to be some good food for a city of that size

I've been to Boise a few years back, and it was "hip" back then. One of the fastest growing areas in the country.
