Big East catch-all topic
In an effort to not have the Bill Dazzle handle excessively visible on the Big East Conference Talk home page (thus potentially dissuading folks from posting on this board) ...

... I've created this thread to respond to previous posts in various threads.

My thinking, in short, is that the greater variety of posters (and their handles) that are seen on this home page, the more (in theory) we entice others to post.

From kmdhoya:

Below are the records of the Big East vs the P5 Football conferences since the 2013-2014 season

1) Villanova (30-11)
2) Creighton (23-13)
3) Seton Hall (22-14)
4) Xavier (26-17)
5) Butler (23-16)
6) St Johns (14-13)

7) Marquette (17-18)
8) Providence (16-19)
9) Georgetown (12-17)
10) Depaul (9-18)

Total: 192-156

This looks strong overall. I'm not pleased to see GU and DePaul at the bottom, but I'm not surprised.

Creighton did better during this time span than I perhaps would have expected.

I would be curious to know how many of the 192 wins were notched vs. teams that (that particular season) went on to have winning records.

Marquette non-conference schedule released today. Illinois and UCLA are both projected top-10 (if not top-5) teams.

This looks very respectable. Will not be easy. Seems I read recently MU lost all five starters. Is that true?

Some interesting stats.

https://www.three-man-weave.com/3mw/coll...dgets-2020

From the writer:

Butler (38.2% below Big East median, 42.1% below average)

Another shocker: discovering that Butler, with its $5.8M budget in a Big East that averages nearly $10M, is at the biggest relative disadvantage, monetarily, in the entire Power 6. DePaul, the second-stingiest Big East program, spent an extra $1M compared to the frugal Bulldogs in 2018-19.

The only lower Power 6 budget belongs to Washington State, where Kyle Smith is attempting to work magic with just $5.5M of expenditures; that’s less than St. Joseph’s, St. Louis, UNLV, and Duquesne (among others), and just $0.2M more than Grand Canyon. Cal and Oregon State also help pull down the Pac 12’s average to the lowest of the Power 6, which also prevents Wazzu from being a bigger outlier than Butler.

Only returmers are Elliott, Lewis and Oso. Lewis will be starter and Elliott is a likely starter. Nevertheless, there is a lot of turnover, which isn't a bad thing considering the dull end of the Wojo era.

A rebuilding year, no doubt. But maybe a fresh start will be a positive thing. One step back to get two steps ahead.

As noted, I feel the hiring of Smart is strong.

RE: Big East catch-all topics
A response to gosports1's post in the thread titled "Refreshing Change," ...

... football and massive universities with lots of money and unrealistic fans are the problem with the Big 12 (and the other P5 leagues) — and the main reason the Big East is relatively safe and stable. The BE has a strong sense of self, is united and does not have to worry about football.

As to gosports1's question regarding a breakaway scenario (and that separation could happen) ... we have now seen with this SEC move what, for example, Texas and Alabama think about Kansas and Baylor. And that is, not very highly. Could the Big East consider adding, for example, West Virginia and Kansas (with the football programs of those two going indy, ala UConn)? Maybe. But I struggle to see that. And such additions, were they to happen, would run counter to the BE narrative of having like-minded universities with similar missions and goals. UConn (as a large public school not located in an urban environment and with DI football) is the one, and understandable, exception to that rule.

Now if the ACC splintered and BC, Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame wanted BE membership (while being indy in football), perhaps that changes the narrative. But that almost would feel like a "return to the scene of the crime" situation.

As a Memphis fan, I use to think that the big boys of college sports looked down overwhelmingly, if not exclusively, on Memphis-type athletic programs. I was wrong. The power players (i.e., those programs that are strong in everything: football, hoops, money, hundreds of thousands of fans, academics, etc.) basically scoff at everybody other than their fellow big boys. Kansas fans (and those fans of the other eight Big 12 programs) now know this. Some are likely stunned, thinking "How could we not be desired for membership by the other power leagues?" And as a Vanderbilt fan, I know this feeling well. VU is simply lucky to be in the SEC. If we were a member of the Big 12, we'd be stuck with Baylor and TCU.

The future of college hoops (just like the future of college sports in general) is uncertain. The NCAA Tournament generates a lot of money and "engages" millions of Americans. I hope it stays open (in theory) to all DI programs. That broad inclusiveness is part of the reason it's special.

If there is a breakaway, I feel the Big East (likely every program in the conference) and multiple programs from other non-P5 leagues will be part of the mix. But with this most recent situation, you never know.
