On another thread I suggested a 10 team conference you could have made up entirely out of eastern independents at the time of the FBS/FCS split:

I have long been intrigued by the idea of a national Magnolia Conference. I would do something like this:

Boston College
Duke
Miami
Northwestern
Notre Dame
Stanford
UCLA
USC
Wake Forest
Vanderbilt

If I could add two more, I would go with Georgetown and Tulane. That would be a really strong academically-led, athletically-strong, national conference.
