According to the Wikipedia machine, BC, Marquette and Xavier are. Notre Dame was founded by the Congregation of the Holy Cross, Providence College was founded by the Dominicans, Seton Hall was founded by the Diocese of Newark, St. John's by the Vincentian Fathers, and Villanova by the order of St. Augustine.

Though the google suggests that the reach of Jesuit education extends beyond institutions founded by the Jesuits ... for instance, I have seen a claim that the first curriculum of Notre Dame followed the Jesuit approach.

If you wanted to make a National Jesuit Conference, given the parameters established by this thread and historical success, it would look like this:

Boston College
Creighton
Georgetown
Gonzaga
Loyola (Chicago)
Marquette
Saint Joseph
Saint Louis
San Francisco
Xavier

AMDG.

I've enjoyed reading this thread. Lots of interesting ideas. And it has highlighted the fact that no league (other than the Ivy from what I know) is comprised fully of very similar universities/athletic departments.

Except for Arkansas replacing West Virginia, this looks like the Big 12.

I'm sure you didn't know that SMU and TCU have a rivalry dating back to 1915. A lot of meetings.

That's why we still play you every year.

Very similar to what I had in mind. I like the idea of contiguous states with Cincinnati [Ohio] being the northern tip of the conference:

Cincinnati
Louisville
Kentucky
Tennessee
Memphis
Virginia Tech
Georgia Tech
Auburn
Florida State
Florida

Very good football and hoops conference covering 7 states and keeping some historical and regional rivalries intact.

I'm good with yours, as well. Only difference is yours is a bit basketball centric, mine is certainly football centric.

So you booted Moo State, LSU and the 2 newcomers, huh? I can see that from your point of view.

Boston College
DePaul
Fordham (Primarily for Academics)
Georgetown
Holy Cross
Loyola Chicago
Marquette
Providence
Saint Louis
Seton Hall
St. John’s
Syracuse (Sure they’re not Catholic but who doesn’t want to see them play Georgetown and St. john’s)
Villanova
Xavier

14 team conference with 9 Eastern Teams and 5 Midwest

If you are going to go away from all Catholic and include Syracuse, how can you have a Big East without UConn?

You make a good point about why make an exception for Syracuse but not UConn. As a Xavier fan my favorite Big East line up is the current one.But that’s only becuase my Musketeers are in it. But objectively it’s obviously not the best Big East Line up.

For my money the best was the 80s Big East and honestly UConn wasn’t much of a factor until the 89-90 seasons when they became and maintained being one of the top teams in the league. If you favorite Big East was during the time that the league sponsored Football then UConn would be an obvious add. So I guess i’m saying I’m just an old crumegon.

I hate the geography but this would be a fun league. Could argue the very old success of a Holy Cross or Seattle would be enough to push one of those above Saint Louis

Would be a lot of fun, but Northwestern probably doesn't belong in that conference. It's an amazing school, beautiful campus, and solid athletic program (depending on the sport) but an elite private school like them sticks out like a sore thumb. Not sure who you'd replace them with since schools like IU/Purdue and Oklahoma/Okie State would push the number past ten and would be awkward without their in-state rival.

Anyway here's another one for everyone: The Confusion Conference!

Miami (Ohio)
Da U (Florida)
Washington (Seattle)
WashU (St. Louis)
Cornell (New York)
Cornell (Iowa)
Jacksonville (Florida)
Jacksonville State (Alabama)
Columbia (New York)
Columbia (Missouri)

If you wanna go with even more than add the four Loyolas (Chicago, Maryland, New Orleans, Marymount).

Eight is enough. WAC circa 1968.

Awesome tight geography and it actually happened!
But….it’s 10 schools so throw in Air Force and San Diego St too
