Coming to mind off the top of my head, I'm thinking Rice, Temple, and maybe ULM.

Rice because it is just way too big, and Texas, Texas A&M, and Arkansas aren't coming back to Rice on a regular basis to help fill it up anytime soon. College football stadiums are typically built to last 50-100 years (sometimes even longer) and I don't see how Rice Stadium will still be viable going 10-20 years into the future.

Temple because financially, long term, it might be better to take the financing of a stadium of it's own than to pay the Eagles ever increasing rent indefinitely.

ULM, maybe, because it is so dated, although Malone Stadium might be able to be renovated.

There very well are others, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

There might be reasons why Temple would want it’s own stadium and could potentially make financial sense, but it’s doubtful that it would ever be because it’s cheaper than renting from the Eagles. Building in a dense major city like Philly is a totally different exercise compared smaller cities or even less dense large cities. No matter what the Eagles might charge for rent, the cost of building a new stadium from scratch in Philly plus maintaining it 365 days per year would be massive by comparison.

I think this is the calculus for not building. Enormous hoops to jump through, and expenses once in place.
Temple talked about it but IIRC they renewed the LFF deal for at least 5 years.

It's a moot point because VU officials are not going to spend money on a new stadium (and I agree that they shouldn't). The current stadium will be upgraded (with only a few details having emerged). We Vandy fans are cautiously optimistic.

The Titans stadium is definitely an option as a temporary facility during teardown/rebuilding, but from Google Maps it looks like there's no room to build anything much larger than the current stadium with how tight of a fit it is. Why not build on the current parking lot and field across from the track complex?

If Vanderbilt razed the existing facility to construct a new facility on that same footprint (which would be my hope if we were to get a new stadium), playing at Nissan Stadium in the interim would be very tricky (and perhaps impossible) because the Titans and Tennessee State University are the main tenants. Maybe VU could pull off playing one or two games at Nissan and a couple at the future Nashville SC MLS stadium. But I struggle to see that working.

Constructing a future stadium on the parking lot you mention would be an option (true story: I was once, while walking along Natchez Trace and across from that parking lot, struck in the face with a bag of ice thrown from a passing car; fortunately, no major harm done).

Regardless, VU officials have made clear the current stadium will be updated and no new stadium is planned. The existing facility offers some history and a strong location (no fewer than five hotels and lots of restaurants and bars within a three-block walk for all the visiting SEC fans).

On the history theme, the original stadium was opened in 1922 and the only thing left from that design (as I understand) is the location and dimensions of the playing surface.

I saw U2 perform at Vanderbilt Stadium in July 2011. That concert is noteworthy for Bono inviting a vision impaired man (Adam Bevell) to perform All I Want Is You. After the song, Bono gave the man his green Gretsch guitar. The crowd went nuts.

Yeah, but that's in Southern California. The most regulated state in the nation. They could probably build that stadium in Texas for $80 million.

With some upgrades Vanderbilt Stadium could be a really awesome place to watch a game. The location is just so hard to top.

Vanderbilt Stadium was built in 11 months when Dudley Field was razed in 1980. Could they do it again?

The only one in serious need is Rice Stadium, but until Rice decides what kind of program they are building, stadium design should follow.

FWIW, it's a great stadium, but crowds of 15,000 are dwarfed by the sheer size of the place, even after they took out seating on one end zone.

Rice has perhaps the best stadium for sight lines in college football. It’s a great stadium. They’ve already reduced capacity from 70 k to about 45. The only thing they need is to improve concessions.
Yeah, the Giant “R” on that humongous tarp has to be visible from space.

Tarps look bad in every single venue they're in. Empty seats are more aesthetically pleasing everytime.

Try again.

Colorado State's new stadium cost $220 million and was built 5 or 6 years before SDSU.

In Texas, $80 million only gets you this 11,000-seat high school stadium.

The University of Utah is spending $80 million to upgrade and expand the south end zone of their stadium.

That ticked me off because I was hoping they'd revitalize Fairgrounds Speedway, one of the most historic tracks outside of the Carolinas. It's still up in the air, but a Cup race there would be amazing. I know the locals are crying about loudness, wait until they hear a stadium packed with 30k soccer fans.

I like Rice Stadium. It's historic. But, they should never have kickoffs before 6pm. It's too hot for noon or afternoon games.

Who knows what the land situation around Temple's campus is, unless it's on or adjacent to campus it might not be worth it. ULM seems cash strapped so a renovation there is probably prudent as well.

Would UCLA ever build something on campus? USF seems to be a name that's floated out there for this topic. Topic was resolved recently for South Alabama, UNLV, and UAB at least.

I don't know if UCLA will ever have enough land to build a stadium. I guess they could knock down some of those dumpy Bel Air homes. lol Even their baseball stadium is off campus and very tiny. Named after someone pretty famous, but very rinky dink compared to the type of teams they produce.

Even if they could find the land, it would never be approved to be built. The surrounding community would kill it. Jackie Robinson Stadium is the smallest in the Pac-12, but the players love it. They had ten players drafted in the 2021 MLB draft, the most of any school in the country. In the 2019 MLB draft, they had 13 players drafted, tied with Vanderbilt for the most in the country. As long as they can bring talent into Westwood and the players like the stadium, they will be alright. I think it is a great place to watch a game.

Ah gotcha. They could probably find a way to make it work knowing that the revenue upside of Vanderbilt (and let's be real, visiting fans) playing there would justify the logistical hassle but makes sense that it isn't ideal.

Those excuses in the last paragraph from the Vandy admin seem meh. History only matters until practical considerations get in the way, and not like we're talking about the original Ohio Stadium structure let's be honest. Location would be virtually identical to current situation. Given the money that would be needed for a new stadium (much less one that's first rate that would substantially improve Vandy's potential as a program) a renovation makes sense unless some billionaire alum writes a check, but no athletic department would give that as an official reason.
