Which schools that are not already on schedule to have new stadiums (i.e., Hawaii and San Diego State) are most in need of a new stadium?

Coming to mind off the top of my head, I'm thinking Rice, Temple, and maybe ULM.

Rice because it is just way too big, and Texas, Texas A&M, and Arkansas aren't coming back to Rice on a regular basis to help fill it up anytime soon. College football stadiums are typically built to last 50-100 years (sometimes even longer) and I don't see how Rice Stadium will still be viable going 10-20 years into the future.

Temple because financially, long term, it might be better to take the financing of a stadium of it's own than to pay the Eagles ever increasing rent indefinitely.

ULM, maybe, because it is so dated, although Malone Stadium might be able to be renovated.

There very well are others, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

When NIU football was finishing in the top 20 for a few years there, I was speculating maybe they could build a 50k+ seats indoor stadium close to the western suburbs of Chicago that also be used some NFL preseason games and also some major college football games, even a bowl game.

But NIU football has dropped off recently and frankly the fan attendence at NIU games just never was any good, even when the team was good. You can blame all those Tues and Wed night games in November, but in the end, the fan support just does not seem to be there for NIU.

I'm not really familiar with any schools in the OP, though it seems to me that Rice can probably accomplish their goals by removing the upper decks and replacing with a new press box/suite tower on one side. Who knows what the land situation around Temple's campus is, unless it's on or adjacent to campus it might not be worth it. ULM seems cash strapped so a renovation there is probably prudent as well.

Would UCLA ever build something on campus? USF seems to be a name that's floated out there for this topic. Topic was resolved recently for South Alabama, UNLV, and UAB at least.

They really need to. The Alamodome is sterile and generic as can be. The AC is nice though.

Pat Ryan and Northwestern will do something with the football stadium in the next 10 years (just built new IPF & basketball arena), but it’ll probably be a renovation.

We might not see any new FBS stadiums in the next 10 years unless something gives at USF, Temple, or Rice.

There might be reasons why Temple would want it’s own stadium and could potentially make financial sense, but it’s doubtful that it would ever be because it’s cheaper than renting from the Eagles. Building in a dense major city like Philly is a totally different exercise compared smaller cities or even less dense large cities. No matter what the Eagles might charge for rent, the cost of building a new stadium from scratch in Philly plus maintaining it 365 days per year would be massive by comparison.

Temple can also talk to Penn and rent Franklin Field or the Philadelphia Union and share their stadium (although Suburu Park is very limited in capacity). Both options could be cheaper than the Eagles. Maybe converting the Phillies stadium to football is an option although it would be inconvenient for the grounds crew.

SDSU's new stadium is estimated to cost $310 million. That ought to explain why there isn't a long list of other schools eager to build new football stadiums.

The list of unrenovated stadiums at least 20 years old is a small one:

Rice Stadium (1950)
Falcon Stadium, USAFA (1962, but doesn't need major change)
Perry Stadium, Bowling Green (1966)
Alamodome, UTSA (1993, but not UTSA's decision)
UB Stadium, Buffalo (1993)
Ford Stadium, SMU (2001)

I mean Dekalb is tiny, they're too far from Rockford to get much attention, and in the west burbs they have to market to football fans whose attention is mostly on the Bears or the Big Ten school they went to. But the season after the Orange Bowl they sold out most of their game or were close on the weeknights.

How about posting some pictures of the stadiums you believe need attention. It would be easier to identify/debate the needs.

UBs stadium was renovated after they joined the MAC. They removed the track and did a few other things.

FWIW, it's a great stadium, but crowds of 15,000 are dwarfed by the sheer size of the place, even after they took out seating on one end zone.

And unpleasant for the fans. Baseball stadium geometry offers bad sight lines for football. Hate going to see football at Yankee Stadium, for example. I think Penn, which you pointed out, is an interesting idea, should Temple ever need options.

MLB teams hate screwing up the field for Sep/Oct. That’s why Northwestern Wrigley games are in November. No MLB team will agree to college football permanently anymore.
