The AD’s voted for this. Blame the membership

Since this was the AD's choice you cant blame the league for it. I see a lot of people complaining about it all across the league but no one is contacting their AD's 07-coffee3

Since the media relations guy passed away, the ADs may have been told the conference had no way of coordinating the event.

Yeah, this sucks. But at the rate this Delta variant is beginning to spread and with the lagging vaccination rates across the C-USA footprint, it might end up being a good thing to zoom it and not start camps with players and staff in protocols. Just saying.

Also, just being honest, these things don’t hold much value outside of the SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big Ten who have their own networks to program and enough media interest to make a site visit make sense.

Hardly any of the media outlets that “cover” — and I use that term loosely — would send a reporter to Dallas or anywhere else. They would barely cover it if it were happening in their own city. They would barely cover the home team. They barely staff the *games* …

The media in Dallas would mostly yawn also. You would get a couple of local tv stations, you’d maybe get the Texas papers represented and mostly the rest of the attendees would sit alone at a table for two hours until somebody felt sorry for them and asked them a question to be nice.

The main goal of these events is to shoot TV interviews for the first month of game broadcasts. You can do a lot better content, controlling it yourself, and presenting it as you want, without burdening people with travel they don’t even want to make anyway. Just being real about it.

RE: Conference USA skips out on hosting a traditional conference media day
If we are embarrassed as a whole conference to show up and promote the brand for two days, might as well break this thing apart. Everything done, seems to be regressive. We used the Cowboys facilities for nobody but the cusa officials who had wet dreams of walking through the Cowboys facility. It certainly wasn’t for the fans and the head qtrs have no business being in Texas.

Our conference is already hidden enough, making the fans spend on extra subscriptions just to see road games on tv.

For a school that is trying to get out of this league, we could’ve used a few interviews with national pundits as we try to carry momentum off of 2 cusa titles and 3 straight conference championship appearances. We can’t get our beat writer to simply ride over to the practice facility to sit down with coach Clark nor fly out to frisco, so we could’ve used 3-4 hours of Clark and players speaking with other schools beat writers.

Pretty spot on analysis. There was a time when it was a well attended event and worth the time and effort. However, that changed a long time ago. I would say only a handful of C-USA teams get decent coverage these days. Obviously, one of those is not UAB.

Our own local TV and sports media doesn't even cover CUSA Media Days so this really isn't a big deal at all. If you're mad about this then you just like being mad about something.

It will be attended virtually, far better than same event would be in person.

RE: Conference USA skips out on hosting a traditional conference media day
Instead of worrying about a media days event that is a relic from the past, the attention should be focused on improving the broadcast contract and the schools generating their own content. Relying on media companies, who are downsized to the point of irrelevancy beyond their primary coverage teams, is also a relic of the past. Fans of CUSA schools barely even pay attention to their local media because coverage has been so poor for so long. So tell your own story better than they would, figure out how to ninja-promote it to your base and then work to be part of the national conversation around TOPICS at the national level. Focus on relationships with individual reporters.

The biggest impediment I see with C-USA media coverage is the lack of relationship with ESPN. This shows up in so many ways. CUSA is an afterthought in all C-USA coverage by the network as a result. C-USA teams rarely show up in highlights. Also, C-USA teams, coaches and athletes rarely are featured or even included in national or regional trend stories. And part of that is access.

Example: A C-USA media event in Dallas doesn’t really make sense. You know what would make sense, if you were part of the ESPN family? Doing this in Charlotte, using ESPN’s SEC/ACC network facilities. This economy of scale would enable ESPN to interview C-USA athletes on a wide variety of topics easily and at little expense, putting CUSA in visible conversation. It adds up. What we see now is symptomatic of the oppposite effect: out of sight, out of mind.

Partnering with ESPN will probably put us in the weeknight game slots with the MAC and Sunbelt. One downside that I see, is a negative impact on attendance, especially for the traveling fan and those with school age children.

In regards to the media day event, if fans don’t attend it and no one wants to cover it, the money is better spent elsewhere.

UAB would benefit greatly by mid-week games. It's not coincidence that many of the top 10 crowds in school history are mid-week. I could easily see Protective being mostly full for mid-week games on national TV. You're only talking about 1-2 games a season. I think UAB would draw 10-20 percent higher in these games than the typical Saturday. This isn't true for every C-USA school, but I think it is proven true in Birmingham, Ala.

RE: Conference USA skips out on hosting a traditional conference media day
You likely lose a lot of season ticket holders if you do mid week games. I travel from huntsville. 6 Saturdays a year is doable, 2 games on a random weeknight are much tougher and make me reconsider being a season ticket holder.

I agree with blazeinbham. I’m not going to try and spin this into a good thing. We are going to be the only fbs conference not having in person media days. It’s pathetic, and it’s bush league.

I didn't say it was good thing. It's not a thing at all.
