I wonder if the Southland had tried fighting back the way the MAC did, if they could have been spared mass relegation?

Maybe adding schools like Wichita St, Tulsa, NE LA, and UNT in the process?

Southland could have added Wichita State, Tulsa, West Texas A&M and New Mexico State all who seemed to be FBS compliance, and have some MVC schools in as affiliates who did qualified. I think Drake qualified, but they were looking for no scholarships in the future.

Could be. It is an easier fight if there is a power conference willing to advocate on your behalf.

Though as for as adding UNT, according to the description above, it doesn't sound like an administration at the time at UNT that would have been willing to fight.

They successfully reclassified 6 and 2 were subject to reclassification but were able to successfully appeal. Thus the MAC was reclassified, borderline or not.

It was the NCAA that claimed that they were subject to reclassification, and the outcome of the appeals process was that the claim was proven false. So the MAC was reclassified, but four of their schools were not.

Therefore MAC (4): CMU, WMU, Toledo, Miami University.

You are the one trying to use the minutia of phrasing in order to omit four schools from your list that belong there. Miami University and WMU were not in fact "possibly affected by reclassification" under the rules set out, so long as they were willing to take the trouble to show that the NCAA was cheating in its application of the rules. Since they were willing to take the trouble, they were able to show that the NCAA was mistaken.

True or False: The NCAA wanted Miami OH and WMU reclassified to 1Aa and tried to make it happen

True or False: The NCAA successfully reclassified the MAC in 1982 to 1AA and if upgrading to 1A was never allowed then the MAC would still be 1AA

Villanova was I-A until 1981, didn't play from 1982-84, then moved to I-AA.

I think West Texas A&M did something similar. Dropped the program and then brought it back D2.

Not the same thing as moving down willingly even though the end result is the same.

West Texas and Hardin Simmons were both part of the now defunct Border Conference. Both schools took similar paths. They dropped their programs and later and brought them back, with West Texas playing at the D2 level while Hardin Simmons opted for D3.
