Quote:And now for another example of "tell me you're recruiting without tell me you're recruiting" involving Alabama coach Nick Saban and quarterback Bryce Young.

Speaking at the Texas High School Coaches Association convention on Tuesday, Saban raised some eyebrows when he was asked about name, image and likeness laws. Within his answer, he revealed that Crimson Tide quarterback Bryce Young is doing pretty well for himself in this new era of college athletics.

"Our QB has already approached ungodly numbers, and he hasn't even played yet," Saban said, per Chris Hummer of 247Sports. "If I told you what it is … it's almost 7-figures."

Not bad for someone who threw for one touchdown as a freshman.

Dollar specifics have been largely hard to come by with NIL laws being so new, but it would hardly be surprising if Young is earning in the high six figures even though he's yet to start a college game. Young has already signed with CAA for marketing deals and he has a deal with Cash App. Young also has large social media following -- almost 83,000 followers on Instagram despite just three posts.

His success as a recruit has largely set that foundation. Young was a coveted five-star recruit for the Tide's 2020 class and the No. 1 quarterback in that group. Some even projected he was going to win the starting job over Mac Jones heading into last year. Young is likely to start this year, however, and could quickly become the face of college football. William Hill Sportsbook gives him the third-best preseason Heisman odds at +900.

Yes, being the starting quarterback at Alabama is almost always going to be a lucrative deal in the NIL era. Saban can use that to his advantage, just like any school in a state where NIL laws are effective. But it's also worth pointing out that Young had marketing value even before he stepped foot on to campus.

Remember, the NCAA's relief waiver for NIL states that high school athletes may also engage in the same types of NIL opportunities without impacting their NCAA eligibility. For prospects like Young, market value doesn't have to coincide with being a college starter. It wouldn't be surprising if some blue-chip recruits or true freshmen end up making more earlier in their career than many established starters will make in their careers.

This the beginning of the end.

Saban to 2023, 2024, 2025, etc recruits:
"Our current QB is making $1M. Sign with us and you'll make the same".

How the heck is UC supposed to compete with that.

Because Bama was recruiting the cream of the crop before.

Agreed. UC never got recruits that Alabama wanted. Even if it's a local kid.

Technically some of our guys have "offers" from schools like Penn State or Auburn, but I always got the feeling that those were more bottom-tier offers "in case our first and second choices fall through." Maybe I'm talking out of my rear end though.

Sort of like Bill Gates telling kids that innovation is the key to success... when he got his own first billion by stealing technology from Xerox.

I can just imagine Saban shaking his head and saying, "kids these days..."

The 6 lane highway wide hole in this system was never what schools and their markets would be able to get its stars the best $$, it’s that this $$ is going to start flowing to the players in HS whether express or wink and nod deferred. The numbers are going to be staggering when the open bidding commences.

RE: Ridder NIL Deal
It's going to be interesting to see what happens to guys that are underrecruited.

Given the ability to transfer without penalty, they could dominate as a freshman, put themselves in the portal and then allow the bidding to begin.

At the end of the day, I can't see how the divide between the P5 and G5 doesn't increase dramatically.

A decent chunk of football programs are going to permanently suck without any chance of breaking through. Eventually a lot of those lesser programs' fans are going to have enough and just stop caring. I'd assume those fans would just shift to pro sports.

So looks like Raising Canes just got into the game. Saw they have a kid tweeting out eating their Chicken after a workout on College Football live today. Had 2 others in the segment also.

I’m going to enjoy this upcoming season and see how things go in the years to follow but I can foresee my interest in college football tracking how I feel about the NFL in the not too distant future.

I fear you are spot on and it a few years I will no longer say to my wife "We cannot travel in September to December because of our UC tickets".

Unless we get invited to the P5 we are toast.

RE: Ridder NIL Deal
Generally speaking, I leave predictions to Carnac The Magnificent. So take what I foresee with less than a grain of salt.

Historically, when there are new products or services, many buyers jump in early fearing that they might be left behind if they don’t buy as soon as possible. The predictable outcome of overpaying for being early in line often occurs.

In time prices level off and decrease until we see market equilibrium establish itself. Of course, prices can fluctuate based on increases or decreases in aggregate supply or demand. Usually, these fluctuations tend to be far less volatile than the fluctuations seen in an early market.

I suspect that the NCAA athlete/NIL marketplace will follow the same patterns we see in markets for new, innovative products and services. Consequently, the prices we see now will be lower going forward. How much lower? For that answer, please see my buddy Carnac The Magnificent.

All this has done is given schools like Alabama another path to widen the gap between themselves and teams like UC.

This is BAD BAD BAD for college athletics.

SMU in the late 70's and early 80's went from a bad to great team simply because a couple of Dallas oil tycoons stepped in and bought them the players they needed. This is going to have to be UC's path if they want to succeed long term. I can't see Fickel wanting to stick around after a few years of trying to recruit against teams who are just buying players.

I also wonder about kids losing motivation/ that hunger to be the best, put in the extra time. Of course there are some players will always go above and beyond. But give most 18-year-olds a couple hundred thousand dollars (or more) and chances are they will not turn out to be the same person.

It may hurt AL In someways. Would he be the same quarterback three years from now if he’s living large?

Alabama and Cincinnati are not at the same level and never will be, regardless of NIL. The gap is as wide as it is ever going to get because that gap is an infinite space...this won't make it any bigger.

So you are saying that someone making $1M, and looking at NFL players making $50M-$200M, will have less motivation now. Ok. And someone making $50,000 will just hang them up instead of trying to get to the NFL, which is really what most of that level of kids care about anyways....not playing for Bama/UGA/OSU/etc. Most of the guys making big bucks (of which there will likely be 10 in a year) more often than not have insane insurance policies on them as well...that's like saying someone making $50,000 salary will get lazy even though there are jobs in their field that make $300,000...come on now, isn't that the exact opposite argument most free-market individuals make to why certain salaries and benefits shouldn't be afforded to everyone? I don't agree with that mentality economically, just like I don't here. I could care less if some Guard on Bama's OL gets lazy, just means you blitz the A-gap until someone else proves they should earn that recognition.

I guess we're in the "throw every single argument at a wall" stage of old men yelling at the sky now.

This won’t hurt Alabama one bit.

You can bet the stack of paper he is getting paid is being shown to every recruit they are talking to.

There will be some unintended consequences for sure.

The one I can think of off the top of my head is, the coach decides the bench the $1 million dollar QB. That company will be on the phone in a New York minute.

That's the only part of this that I think is a nightmare in the making. Either the ballooned head coaching salaries finally revert back to where they *should* be, or career position coaches basically become a thing of the past.

Why is that part a nightmare?

Even outside of entertainment, it's very common for the "talent" to make more than the "boss." You see it all the time in sales. It's not uncommon in engineering, medicine, and academia. I had a professor in my PhD program who made more $ than everyone at his university except the President & a few people in the athletic department.

Try disciplining or having a come to Jesus talk with an 18 year old who has the management flow chart upside down based on ones and zeros. Mix in the transfer portal, and this is going to be a pluperfect disaster.

Exactly...you're not dealing with adults in established situations like that occupational model outlined above. This is a completely different animal...but it does end up working most of the time in the NFL, so there is precedent.
