This is only going to end badly. Not for Ridder but for UC and all of collegiate sports.

Des is about to get some major bucks. Jeremiah Davenport already has two deal lined up, on that is going to pay him $3K just to get people to like his tweets on social media. With all due respect to JD, he has barely scratched the surface here, I doubt many in the tri-state outside the hardcore fan base knows who he is yet. Ridder is a household name in the metro area and even beyond.

Within 10 years college athletics will turn in the wild west of recruiting similar to the 1980's in SWC.

Car dealer to potential recruit: "Sign with my team and I'll put you in a commercial and pay you $50K and give you a brand new F150."

That was already happening. Adidas and Nike admitted to paying kids six figures to go to Louisville, UK, Arizona, etc. Nobody got in any trouble.

A BBQ restaurant is paying the Arkansas OL group $5K each. We used to call that a “$100 handshake”. Odds are the OL group was already receiving handshakes from that place.

The toothpaste is out of the tube. There is no turning back. All we can hope for is that further divide won’t develop between UC and the rest of the field.

Literally already happens except without players having the proper means to bank the 50K and earn fair compensation for their likeness. Relax.

Yup. Any potential 1st RD QB has a ton of marketing potential. I'm happy that Des gets to start fulfilling it before some ridiculous arbitrary age.

I'm going to attempt to just not worry about the $, paying players, etc. and try to separate all of that from watching the sports. I hope I can do that. If not, I'll just watch the Bengals I suppose.

I guess I don't understand how it's that hard to do that...but I'm also not one of the people who says they'll stop watching sports because a guy gets on a knee even if I personally stand up and put my hand on my heart for the anthem. Just enjoy the game, because that is all it is...just because 4-5 kids on a team get a $1,000 check doesn't change how the game itself makes you feel, or how watching your alma mater win should.

That's my concern. Let's hope UC has enough alumni that care about the football team and want to "help".

The ironic thing is one of the first guys to step up and give Davenport was former Miami football player, Kyle Decker. I suspect we’ll see more non-alums step up, and hopefully the alumni will as well.

Just an early life lesson. Even if they make it to the league the starting QB or star player will always be worth more to sponsors and potential endorsements then the OL/DL. Some employees are worth more than others at any job.

We know we don't - at least compared to the big guys. I'm not saying this NIL stuff is wrong, but it's clearly destined to increase the divide between the have-nots and the haves, especially at the top end.

There might be a flurry here in the beginning, but I don't think it will take long for many companies to figure out they aren't really getting much bang for their buck. But for those that have a number of wealthy fans more concerned with winning than what is to them small change, it's an opportunity to legally make a real difference and look like a local hero. This a bonanza for schools like OSU and Alabama and will have a big negative impact on competitive balance over time unless something (I don't know what btw) is done imo.

RE: Ridder NIL Deal
I can't logically or morally be against NIL when lots of head coaches are making $5 million + per year, with coordinators at big schools making $1 million +. That's not to mention the money that Mark Emmert, the athletic directors, the conference commissioners, and the media partners are making. The best analogy I've heard is -- if a really talented musician on scholarship at CCM wants to make some money gigging on the weekends or teaching lessons, no one bats an eye. Yet, if an athlete wants to be paid for his/her time, it's frowned upon. This should have happened years, if not decades ago. Unfortunately, it likely doesn't benefit UC -- but most things about modern college athletics don't either. The divide between the haves and have-nots will continue to grow regardless of NIL.

Great post, I am happy for any student athlete that benefits from NIL.

The difference is schools aren't competing against each other to win a national championship in music. A talented musician isn't going to get a gig just because he chose to go to UC.

I'm not against players getting paid but the last I checked they were already getting paid. A UC scholarship with free room and board, meals, clothing, etc is worth over $125K for four years. Plus they get roughly another $6K per year as a stipend from the ruling that came about several years ago.

Without a way to control it, this will eventually turn into a bidding war for high school recruits. Frankly I wouldn't care if I rooted for OSU or Alabama. Those schools will have plenty of money and willing boosters to make sure they keep getting the top athletes. UC will suffer and the divide will only grow.

RE: Ridder NIL Deal
As a fan, I don't like it at all. I just prefer a game that has a balanced playing field. I know it's not that way right now, but I'm guessing this only will make it worse.

As a person, I say make your money boys.
