MLB draft
Glad that the draft was moved back until after the CWS.
Thru round 5: I remember when Rice players were often drafted in the early rounds...

Double whammy these days: we end our season much earlier, but no one is getting distracted by the draft, any way.
Here is hoping both of these problems end soon.

RE: MLB draft
Ty Madden was a 1st round pick out of Texas. He originally was a Rice commit, before he changed over to UT. His high school teammate (Colton Cowser) was the #5 overall pick out of Sam Houston State. I wonder if they've ever had anyone picked that high before?
eta - yeah he's the highest Bearkat ever. The only other 1st round pick prior to him was Glenn Wilson, the ex-Astro.

Most everyone is shocked Madden slipped to #32. The Mets got a steal with Rocker slipping to #10.

Mets absolutely got a steal. Bet he still gets top 5 bonus though.
On another note, I think there was a good deal of money saving measures going on the the first 10 rds. Taking guys higher than projected and paying them below slot value (deals in place before pick) to spend on HS players later in the draft. I think Cowser might fit into this type of scenario. Also plenty of Covid Junior picks (actually seniors) and though they have eligibility remaining their age starts to become a concern for clubs so, again, under slot might be in play. I'm just guessing here but I found it to be an interesting draft on that front.
With only 20 rds I believe the UDFA market might be pretty good but I've not heard if MLB has capped that at $10K like they did last year or if there is a pool of money allowed to be spent. Does anyone think we might have some UDFA signings out of Rice this year?

RE: MLB draft
I would guess that anyone who has been in school for 4 years and has MLB aspirations would pursue signing unless they believe that they can have a big year in 2022 and get drafted in the top 10 rounds. With their ages, unless you think you can increase your signing bonus by a good amount, now would be the time. That would likely include guys like Hughes and Garcia.

RE: MLB draft
Not draft related, but.....
Glenn Otto on the cusp of either being Yankee trade bait or a September call-up as he just got promoted to AAA after 3 consecutive dominant outings in AA...
Quote:The Yankees are confirming @elijfishman
reports from earlier today. Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe will steal the headlines, but Glenn Otto’s continues ascent is one to keep an eye on. He has 103 K’s to just 14 BB in 65.1 IP this season. Also has a .197 BAA and 0.92 WHIP

Imagine if NY had traded up to get Rocker at #7.

You can't trade up in the MLB draft. The only draft choices that are tradeable are the competitive round picks between the numbered rounds (and IIRC, some of those are and some aren't but don't remember all the details).

RE: MLB draft
The Los Angeles Angels made draft history by drafting pitchers in all 20 rounds. The Miami Marlins did the same last year, but that was only a 5 round draft.

RE: MLB draft
The Astros drafted Billy Wagner's son. Brian McTaggert had an interesting trivia question that most of you should be able to get - who are the only father and son combination to both play for the Astros?

The new Rice baseball coach and his father.
Who are the only father and son to hit back-to-back home runs?

RE: MLB draft
In 20 years, how do you think the rankings of best father/son combinations will look? Right now it is probably:
Bobby & Barry Bonds
Griffey Sr. & Griffey Jr.
Felipe & Moises Alou
After that it is a pretty good competition between:
Cruz Sr. & Cruz Jr.
Mel & Todd Stottlemeyer
Ray & Bob Boone
Sandy Alomar Sr. & Roberto Alomar
Dizzy & Steve Trout
Of course lots of current talent likely to climb the rankings over the next 20 years:
Vlad Sr. & Vlad Jr.
Tatis Sr. & Tatis Jr.
Dante & Bo Bichette
Craig & Cavan Biggio
Are we in the golden age of Father/Son MLB stars?
