2021-22 NHL Thread
Still looking for that puck icon up there, GTS....oh, well. Never too early to discuss next season and the offseason moves...oh, and there's an Expansion Draft as well.

As for me and mine, we watching our fave adopted team:

Could the Golden Knights trade for Buffalo’s Jack Eichel?

Quote:..chatter about a possible deal starts to increase and multiple NHL insiders leak word that the Knights are at least kicking the tires on the idea of pursuing (forward) Eichel.

If healthy, Eichel would give the Knights an elite playmaker/scorer that’s missing from the current roster and help the Knights match up with other top pivots in the Western Conference such as Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon and McDavid.

He’d also improve a power play that’s in desperate need of an upgrade.

This past season, Eichel finished with two goals and 18 points in 21 games before he was shut down with a neck injury.

The Seattle Kraken’s expansion draft moves could shake the NHL to its core

Quote:In ten days, the Seattle Kraken will post its first-ever roster for the hockey world to see. 30 of the league 31 teams, excluding the Vegas Golden Knights, will lose one player to the Kraken. Vegas is exempt from the expansion draft and will not receive a share of the $650 million expansion fee from Seattle.

Remember 2017?

Last time out Florida blundered badly in regards to its then roster by using the 8-1 protection scheme. The nine protected players were Aleksander Barkov, Nick Bjugstad, Jonathan Huberdeau, Vincent Trocheck, Aaron Ekblad, Keith Yandle, Mark Pysyk and James Reimer.

The Panthers traded Reilly Smith to the Golden Knights so Vegas would select 30-goal scorer Jonathan Marchessault on a dark day that continues to live in infamy. Florida got back a fourth-round pick in 2018 that ended up being part of the trade that brought Mike Hoffman from San Jose to South Florida.

Quote:Rules for the Kraken:

Seattle must select 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies. The remaing four picks can be used on any position. In 2017, the Golden Knights used all four of these picks on defensemen.

The total value of cap hits for players the Kraken selects must total between 60 and 100 percent of the $81.5 million 2020-21 salary cap. So, they must finish the expansion draft with a cap hit of least $48.9 million.

Of the players Seattle selects, at least 20 of the 30 players must be under contract for the 2021-22 regular season. The other players they select are allowed to be pending free agents, but they can not select any more than 10 pending free agents.

The players Seattle selects are not eligible to be bought out of their contracts by the Kraken until after the completion of the 2021-22 season.

Protecting the Players:

Teams can choose between two protection schemes for its players: Either seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender for a total of 11 players, or teams can protect any combination of eight skaters, regardless of position, and a goalie. For example, a team could protect four defensemen and four forwards or even five defensemen and three forwards.

Teams are obligated to protect players with no-movement clauses in their contracts, unless the player elects to waive the clause for the purpose of the expansion draft. Calgary’s Milan Lucic is one player helping his team out by doing this. Teams do not have to protect players with no-trade clauses.

Players with only two pro seasons, and all unsigned draft choices, are exempt from the expansion draft.

Players still under contract but not expected to play again (there are 18 of them) due to long-term or chronic injury will be exempt from the draft. Florida does not have anyone who falls into this category.

Who is at risk of heading to Seattle?

Teams must expose two forwards and one defenseman who are under contract in 2021-22, have played in at least 27 NHL games the prior season, or played 54 NHL games in the previous two seasons.

For goalies, at least one must be under contract in 2021-22 or be a restricted free agent prior to 2021-22. If a goaltender is exposed who is a restricted free agent, he must have already received his qualifying offer

Seattle will be granted a 48-hour window prior to the draft to sign any unprotected pending free agent (restricted or unrestricted, one per team). If a team loses a player to the Kraken during the signing window, it will not have a player selected from its roster during the draft as this will count as Seattle’s selection.

RE: 2021-22 NHL Thread
Got in to a discussion of breakdown of players by nationality. They were convinced NHL is a lot of Russians & didn't believe me when I said it's dominated by Canadians & than Americans. They thought the Russia league would not only be inferior but not as high-paying. I told them a lot of Russians feel loyalty to their homeland league & the KHL is considered a competitive league.

Official Breakdown:
Canada 40%
US 30%
Russia 5%

Not even the old Soviet countries are enough to help Russia w/ the 5% as Sweden 10% & Finland 4% are also in the Top 5

I was right :) But I would've guessed Europe as a whole having a higher percentage.

I think my discussion helped show me why NHL is still 4th of the major US pro leagues. A lot of people (not just in my conversation yesterday; I've met others as well) don't realize how many Americans are actually playing in the league.

"The Hockey Theme" is a Canadian piece of theme music written in 1968 by Dolores Claman and orchestrated by Jerry Toth. It is widely recognized as Canada's unofficial second national anthem. The theme was associated with CBC Television's Hockey Night in Canada. Dolores Claman died during the week of 11–17 July 2021, in Spain. She was 94, and suffered from dementia in the two years prior to her death.

Holy Crap:

Quote:After backstopping the Montreal Canadiens to the Stanley Cup final, Carey Price has been left unprotected for the Seattle Kraken expansion draft.

Price could become the face of the NHL's 32nd franchise if general manager Ron Francis and his staff decide to take on one of the biggest contracts in hockey, though both TSN and Sportsnet reported Price might have to have surgery on his knee.

Price agreed to waive a clause in his contract to be exposed so Montreal could protect cheaper backup Jake Allen, but his goaltending ability, off-ice marketability and ties to the Pacific Northwest could make Price an attractive option even with a salary cap hit of $10.5 million US for five more years.

The 2015 MVP and Vezina Trophy winner is the biggest star left unprotected for the Kraken to select, but there's plenty of other talent available.

That's a bit hard to believe.

Was the deal that you could only take a maximum of one unprotected player from a particular team (sans Vegas)? Or did it just work out that way?

Yes, one player per team sans Vegas. Of course, not all these players will actually play for Seattle. Trades will inevitably come, especially with the regular NHL entry draft still to come.

Not sure I understand the moves the Canes are making so far.... Reserving judgement till the final product gets on the ice.... I'm no hockey aficionado... just odd some players are leaving while others staying.... and considering some other signings that have to happen over the summer for us...
