RE: Preseason Football Rankings
I have a friend whose son is a TE for us. He's a former college player and he either currently coaches or has recently coached at multiple lower levels. All this to say, he's not some random fanboy parent. He was critical of the coaching from our last staff. According to him, Rahne has this team operating at a level that Wilder could have only dreamed of. He said the intensity is high. Competition is high. There's a lot of skilled, but young players on the field. Some of the transfers have bought in early and are vocal leaders on this very young team.

I don't know if our young bucks have what it takes to grind out tough games, but I think we're at the very least a 4 win team--with a ceiling as high as 7 wins. That said, the future looks bright, and I think we're an 8-9 win team for several years to come after this season even with some brutal schedules on the horizon.

That's exciting. I'd love to see us up our game. If we do, I think we will really grow the program to where the community support increases...

I hope you are correct. QB is still a big question mark.

I’m in the 3 to 4 wins camp. But I am excited to see the scheme differences and all that speed on the field they’ve recruited.

I dont know why, but Im feeling optimistic about QB play with Wolff and Mack. I am worried about the offense in general though. We have so little depth. I hated losing that stud RB from PSU. LaLa's awesome but cant do it all. Receiving corps is thin, the line is suspect..., We may struggle offensively, but Im hopeful if we do face offensive woes it wont be because of who is behind center.

When does practice start? Im ready to see these guys actually tackle some people.

RE: Preseason Football Rankings
The line has some talent but they really need some depth. They just don't have the numbers.

I think WR may suprise some people. Aaron Moore and Nigel Fitzgerald start to come on 2 years ago and now have 2 years of work put in. Guyes like Braxton Collins, Frederik Antoine, and Javon Harvey have multiple years in the program and are talented. Hendrick seems pretty solid. Blount was at least highly regarded.

RB is a concern for me.

TE is a concern but its probably the least valuable position on offense.

QB is a question mark because we didn't see Wolf for long and its been 2 years so maybe he's improved. But, Mack can play at this level...at least as a running QB.

It's either going to be ugly but with sparks of hope and maybe a late-season upset, or an unexpectedly fruitful campaign that gets RR COY consideration. I fully expect us to be a lot happier about the Monarchs at the end of 2021 than we were at the end of 2019 or even 2018, regardless the record.

Wilder never used TEs much. Rahne's offenses feature athletic TEs. I'm not sure we know what we have at the position until we see them utilized. I know we have some impressive athletes at the position.

That always annoyed me, BW always spouted off about how great our tight ends and what offensive threats they were, and then he rarely ever used them. A good TE is a defensive nightmare.

I forgot about Poff as well. I still think he's the kind of guy that can come in a possibly surprise some people. Im excited to see what he brings.

Thanks for reminding me of another reason Wilder was annoying on offensive playcalling. TE streaks were ALWAYS open with how defenses played us but Wilder never called those plays.

You don't understand how plays are called.

All due respect Giles, but play calling under Bobby was always more than a little suspect even when times were good. BW always said we were going to use the TE more. Honestly, I don't think Brain Scott had a clue on how to use one. Based on his experience RR seems to know how to use a TE.

You don’t have to know anything about football to know how horrible play calling was in his final years.

RE: Preseason Football Rankings
The play calling was at times very suspect. Usually a couple or three times a game.

However the real culprit was the offensive scheme.
I remember someone once noted that we had a good number of running plays, and we did. Handoffs, counters, dives, pitchouts from all over the backfield. The problem was the vast majority of which ended up in the same place, between the tackles. Defenses just had to sit and wait.

The so called Bubble Screen, it almost never worked because there was never a blocking bubble out in front, so it ended up a "naked" screen.

Our passing offense essentially worked twice.
1. TH's ability to extend plays and 2. DW's remarkable dual threat ability - and NFL or near NFL caliber receivers.
Against better defenses, even TH bogged down because of little or nothing schemed over the middle.

No matter what happens going forward, we are not going to see the above glaring offensive weaknesses under RR. 04-cheers
