Dodd: CFP expansion is complicated and could get messy
A lot of this has already been discussed, but I thought this part was interesting.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...t-fallout/

Quote:Will the players benefit ... at all?

There's also significant health and safety issues to consider. The possibility of two teams playing 17 games must be disconcerting for a game that has battled significant medical issues over the last two decades. More than 30 players have died in that timeframe, mostly from heat exertion during practice.

One CFP source said as many as half the 12-team field could play no additional games (assuming six teams do not play in a conference championship game and lose in the first round).

For a team to play the maximum of 17 games, it would have to participate in its league championship game, a first-round playoff game and reach the national championship.

"That's such an unlikely occurrence," one Power Five AD said. "We could go a decade with that not happening."

With more games and more revenue comes increased responsibility. At $1 billion per season in an expanded playoff, an extra $12 million would pour into the coffers of Power Five athletic departments (assuming 78% of the revenue continues to be distributed to teams in those conferences).

Will that lead to enhanced medical coverage from institutions or conferences for athletes, some of whom will put their bodies on the line nearly as often as professionals? Perhaps it results in additional funds going into the pockets of athletes in the CFP beyond what is now possible through name, image and likeness rights?

"Can [CFP participants], if they graduate, walk away with an additional $20,000 or $30,000?" another Power Five AD suggested. "I know the CFP committee is talking about those kinds of things. … At the end of their careers, they get a check for whatever. Those kinds of things are the type of things we're going to have to consider."

Question: Why is it okay to have a 24 game playoff in a lower division, but not a 12 game playoff in FBS?

Better go with the high end of that $20-30k figure. Or higher still... The NCAA, FBS conferences or FBS schools may already provide players yearly academic awards of up to $5,980 or graduation awards of, I guess, up to $23,920. So unsigned players can, today, with just a 4-team playoff in place, command the promise of such from the schools that compete for their labor.

That may be why 17 games is the sticking point ...

... in an 11 game season, an FCS school that is seeded into the first round and goes on to play in the championship will have played 16 games.

The SWAC also has a conference championship game, but the SWAC champion goes to the Celebration Bowl, not the FCS championship, so their max is 13 games in an 11 game season.

NOW, in a 12 game FCS season, 17 games is logically possible, but people may be thinking of FCS seasons as 11 game things.

And of course, if the championship game are two schools that had first round byes, then they only played 15 (or 16 in a 12 game season).

I don't follow any FCS schools, so I was among the people who thought that FCS seasons were always 11 games until I stumbled across a reference to 12 game FCS seasons ... and found out that the rule aims to provide for two byes from Labor Day weekend to Thanksgiving weekend, and sometimes there are 14 Saturdays on the calendar, as there was in 2019.

Most FCS schedules are 11 games without a CCG. Playoff teams that reach the title game play 4-5 additional games.

15-16 is less than 16-17.

Teams playing 17 games will include at least one powderpuff where the starters hardly play.

So will the playoff bound FCS schools, so if FCS in most years max out at 16, and most championship game schools only play 15, the 17 game number is still going to be waved around.

15-16 is less than 16-17.

And people care more if Alabama, Ohio State, etc. play 15-16 than if North Dakota State do. Academics has been brought up as an excuse against expanding the field. Many more of the top academic schools are in FBS as opposed to FCS (the Ivy League doesn't count as FCS because they don't participate in the FCS Championship). FBS is home to Stanford, Northwestern, Duke, Vanderbilt, California, Michigan, etc. They'll care more about "too many games" and "second semester football" than North Dakota State will.

IMO, the current CFP works just fine. Keep it that way, everything else is just a money-grab that puts more physical pressures on the players.

The current system gets less & less popular each year - fine for you but a slow death for the sport.

You’re in the minority on this and the money is way too enticing to go with the fact that attendance DROPPED to a 25 year low in 2019-(Pre Covid) but the players should have a say in this....07-coffee3

No one with power in college sports cares about the players playing too many games - not the schools, not the fans, not the coaches & not the players. It's just a smoke screen to delay change or move the change in a different direction.

I guess it depends on how they rank the conference championship losers. The first round is guaranteed to have a P5 champ and most likely the G5 champ. Would the championship loss out rank the additional data point. It sounds like it might be safer for schools to finish third in the conference then suffer a loss in the conference championship game.

Again, with no union to negotiate, contracts will be all over the map on this.

Is the CFB less popular than the BCS? And the BCS did just fine.

CFB has been popular forever. It was popular when it was just a pure beauty contest with the polls and bowls, it was popular under the BCS, and it is popular now.

Making it more like the NFL with elaborate playoffs is unnecessary to me.

IMO, attendance is dropping for reasons that have nothing to do with the postseason and so it is very unlikely that a change of the postseason will fix it. The main thing is media deals and technology: Basically, ever FBS game is available to be viewed on some channel, and there is wide availability of cheap high-definition viewing devices and streaming. You can enjoy watching a game so much easier at home or anywhere else.

Heck, I know many people who go to LSU games for the tailgating. They tailgate all day, but never go in the stadium. They watch from the parking lot under their tents on a 50" high-def TV.

To me, the expanded playoffs are for the wrong reasons - gobs of money and losers. The conferences want the gobs of money, and all the losers who can't get better than Alabama and Clemson and Ohio State want to make the playoffs anyway. Bad reasons.

Only what I put in bold matters...With SEC Commish one of the leaders in CFP Expansion JMO it is just a matter of time when it goes to 12 schools...look at it like this...even the NFL went to 17 Regular Season games and expanded playoffs...For gobs of money….07-coffee3

What information went into this conclusion? Declining Ratings?

Most sports programming seems to be declining in popularity! The Super Bowl, Finals and World Series have been losing viewership for the past 5-6 year in a row. I believe the wild card round in the NFL lost something like 20% from 2020 to 2021.

“The six games averaged 25.1 million viewers on television and online, which is a 20% drop from last season’s per-game viewership on the first playoff weekend, according to the league and Nielsen. Last year’s four wild-card games, two of which went to overtime, averaged 30.5 million viewers.”

Yes, the G5 can move to FCS and expand the FCS playoffs to 32 if they want access to a division-1 college football playoff.

Otherwise, 3rd and 4th tier bowls with low payout is always there for G5.

The powers-that-be have greatly devalued the 4-team format with the rush of media stating that the 12-team proposal is far superior. They are not going to keep putting the 4-team playoff out there for 5 more years just because they disagree on details or because someone thinks they can get more money by waiting 5 years to take the playoff to the open market.

That was most likely the intent of all of the publicity around the 12-team format, to get people so into it that there would be no turning back.
