College Enrollment in MI
As I would have guessed, some schools had minimal student losses and other as much as double-digit losses during 2020/21.

Schools like UofM, MSU, etc. fared best. Community colleges and undergrad enrollment fared worst.

EMU was down 8% last school year. Across MI, MI colleges down 6.4%.

There will be bounce back in 2021/22 but not completely. Lot will be on a school by school basis. "Hot schools" aren't getting hurt.

Had lunch back in May with a faculty member from Howard. Their applications for freshmen admission are through the roof. [Among HBCUs Howard is red hot academically and Jackson State for FB.]

MBB note about Howard. They signed Makur Maker (5 star big) and got a transfer, Noel Eastern (Purdue) but over Christmas break Covid ran through the team and they had to cancel their season. Makur played two games, with an injury, but was shut down. Noel became eligible but the season was canceled. He played none. Covid destroyed their season. Lot of dashed dreams there.

Makur Maker decided yesterday to stay in the NBA draft.

HU's dream of becoming the Go To HBCU for MBB came crashing down... Here is what happened academically this week. Top academic joined and HU got 20M donation for endowed chairs, etc. (HU has gotten a number of 5, 10, 20 and 40M donations the past 12 months).

Should be no surprise to us, but universities can be 'hot' because of their academics or athletics or both. (I considered MSU as an undergrad because their FB team was a national power).

Duke is a classic case of superior sports (MBB) and academics. UNLV of the 80s and 90s was all about MBB. Some schools like MIT, Cal Tech, etc. Sorry all academics.

Howard has very good academics and their incoming frosh score very well on admission tests. At UNLV a star MBB player in the 90s turned in a paper with his first name misspelled. Early cognitive decline at age 20? Lol.

Heres a hot take that has to do with some of our NIL conversations: an HBCU will make the final 4 in the next 5 years. those are some dedicated fan bases and the right players in the right situation out there can become real celebrities.

The one school, obviously, to follow is Jackson State. I follow recruiting and it seems every two weeks they pick up a new recruit that would have us doing this:

02-13-banana 02-13-banana 02-13-banana 02-13-banana

Sounds crazy, NOW, but they will have the talent of a top 40 team this fall and with good coaching, could look like a possible top 25 team.

All of this is because they hired a coach who is an absolute hero in the Black athletic community.

Noel Eastern should have transferred to Eastern.
