RE: Old Banks School is being demolished
My next door playmate in my first seven years when I lived in Roebuck was Billy Boyette whose parents ran the convenience store on the corner of 5th Ave North and 87th street. He became the first President of the Banks HS student government and was the head of the committee that went to Pensacola to choose the jet that adorned the school. That F-86 was restored and is now on display at the Southern Museum of Flight. The last time I saw Billy, he and his wife were operating a health food store at Eastwood Mall.
I taught summer school a couple of years at Banks and became familiar with the problems that the school had with so many out-of-sight lines in much of the school campus. There were many places where "visitors" and class-cutters could evade being detected by administrators.Dr. Frazeir Banks visited a similar school in California and wanted one like it in B'ham. Since he was City Superintendent, he got his wish and it was named for him.
Banks joins the list of replaced high schools (some demolished) like the okd T.C.I. high school which was renamed Ensley when that city (and its HS) was annexed (over strong protests) by B'ham in the 1930s. Western-Olin HS, West End HS, Hayes HS, the original Carver HS, Ullman HS, Glenn HS(?) and Phillips HS.

Good story.

Old Banks School is being demolished
As a Banks alum, this depressed the hell out of me. I can neither confirm nor deny that I possess a brick that may or may not have once been a part of that campus.
