RE: Parking Garages To Come Down
I’ve been waiting for these outdated garages to come down. Too bad there aren’t any plans to replace them with new modern, space-efficient ones.

On campus population doesn't seem to support it. That's my take on their decision. Open land along the river isn't the worse thing, at least why construction costs seem to have jumped. I don't know since I never parked there but was parking garage needed during events? What happens is something is going at the GB and Savage, same time?

Doesn't make sense to make families, elderly, etc. to walk long distances to/from their cars during poor weather conditions/late nights/weeknights to the
GB. Just not good business sense. Need adjacent parking structure maybe built into an expanded
south end of the stadium at some point.

I always envisioned that south end as a place for an alumni center. Has one of the best views of GB/U-Hall/sports campus you could ask for. They put a garage there, put telecopes and seating too! :) Old fogies can let off the brakes and roll down to Savage. Maybe put a ski rope to get them back up the hill.

too expensive to build and maintain (that's what I heard from UT Facilities) plus with enrollment down by over 20% in last several years, less need for that parking capacity

do plenty of fans park in the parking garages? certainly not the west one, seems like we have gone decades without covered parking near GB, why add one now? (plus those are murder to try and exit from after events)

You are kidding right? Parking was horrendous in the nineties.
The engineering lot was a tiny fraction of what it is now.
I was late way too many times just waiting for a spot to open up.

I rarely had any problems with parking and I attended throughout the entirety of the 90s. Of course you couldn’t arrive to campus 10 minutes before class but I wouldn’t characterize parking as overtly problematic.

I've always hoped to return Lot 10 to a park-like grass area with occasional trees and have game parking in it or on it. Like the "grove" at Ole Miss

Perhaps a crazy idea but it be so cool to have that a grass area. It used to be the football practice field till 1972

Back around 2007 that idea was pitched to UT Administration but never got any steam as it serves as a large main student/staff/faculty parking lot in middle of campus - but its not a crazy idea, cool one actually

I have also, but never got the sense many fans did, seems like most parked closer to GB or Savage.

What would you do on rainy days when cars would cause 2 foot deep ruts?

that's a revenue opportunity to campus parking police.

The costs of digging up acres of asphalt has to be a bit prohibitive too?

If it were to ever be done (a big IF), would have occured at time when lot 10 would be undergoing complete rebuild from base up, but seems unlikely even more so now with decks of parking garage disappearing

yep, as are all the low lying areas between UN and the Glass Bowl, unfortunately has not stopped UT from putting in buildings and parking lots

Really wish they would be able to simply build a large garage and restore greenspace by way of taking out some tarmac throughout campus, but alas, that isn't in the cards. More ugly black asphalt lots for all!

I'm not sure it would be called a floodplain currently. The creek used to curve close to the Glass Bowl and things were worse.
