RE: Monday Musings July Edition
It's not Monday (yet), at least in the U.S. but I'm musing over Covid.

This is an article suggesting Covid will rage through Florida until it peaks in mid-September when most will be vaccinated or have the disease.

https://www.fox13news.com/news/through-v...id-19?s=09

What does this have to do with EMU? We play Texas State in late September and Texas is among the three states hit hardest by Covid now (FL, TX, and Mo). Will this effect the CFB season???

The USF professor in this article thinks FL will hit herd immunity 'the hard way' - most get vaccinated or infected and built up post infection immunity.

I can not see more and more schools jumping to super conferences. Who wants a conference with 16, 24 or even 32 teams?

If you have a super conference with 32 teams, composed of 4 divisions of 8 teams you have something akin to pro sports.

"No thanks."

At first glance I vehemently agreed. Then... I remembered that ONLY 30 teams in the NCAA actually generate a profit. If they want to form a super-conference, I would be all for it. They can deal with the NIL rights and such that come with recruiting those athletes that are solely interested in a professional athletics career.

The MAC, the rest of the G5 and the doormats of the P5 begin each season with ZERO chance of winning an actual championship. One might say such teams are irrelevant, but if so, why do their games get televised and blogs like this exist? I think the super-conference concept will only benefit the EMU's of the world. Just my viewpoint, with no historical references.

But who wants a conference with 16, 24, 32, 48, 64, etc. (I'm having fun now... 02-13-banana).

Would a B1G fan be happy being part of a 32-team conference?????

NOW, here is the rub: With 32-team 'conferences' do they ever play ANY team outside of the conference? Would one conference be called the "Eastern Conference" and the other "Western Conference' (each 32 teams).

MSU wouldn't go out of conference to play EMU but might play Duke which is within their conference but another division.

Isn't what I'm describing sound a lot like say MLB before inter-league games?

Or maybe "American Conference" 32 teams. "National Conference" and each conference has their own playoffs and then a "National Championship Game of the two conference championships where they play for the Mark Emmert trophy.

Valid points once again Steve! We have a clustef--k on our hands right now and I don't see that train being stopped anytime soon. I just simply cannot see any way where the talent gap between the B1G and MAC does anything but get wider due to the new transfer and NIL rules. Your supposition with regards to two 16 team conferences playing for one trophy is NOT you having fun but rather a prescient view as to what will eventually happen. The BIG money programs depend on athletics to cultivate donor money and television contract dollars for their existence. They are prepared to compete as if it were for their basic survival, something EMU and their ilk plainly cannot do.

That said, when toe meets leather on Sept 3 against St. Francis, EMU has ZERO chance of winning a NCAA FBS football championship as the NCAA is currently configured. It is what it is and the future for EMU has indeed become bleaker with respect to competing with the larger programs.

For me, however, I will still love going to EMU football games despite the team not playing in the Super FBS. The MAC presents a compelling value proposition of committed athletes playing an entertaining brand of football at a very attractive price point.

A point i've made in other threads is the P5 and G5 are going to eventually fully split into separate systems - think along the lines between FCS and FBS. You'll have 4 16 team conferences in P5 and then whatever is leftover in G5. You'll probably still see inter conference games (like FCS and FBS) and maybe some bowls with mixed teams - but the break is coming. It isnt a bad thing - i dont think.

This is the last Monday in July and I'm still musing about July things, like why the hell can't the U.S.A. win in Olympic basketball.
