Monday Musings July Edition
After surviving the firework bombardment here are this months musings.
NIL is here the sky did not fall, purists are upset, (although to be fair most were upset when WR's did not have to be in a three point stance anymore) finally so far the most lucrative deal was for Master P's son. I do not think anyone will get rich off this and really I don't know if players will like/understand how to pay taxes on some of this new income as opposed to "improper benefits" that exist at 100 of the FBS playing schools (hello varsity ford). (Aubrees will be sending out w-4's for free buffetts and powell will for chicken wings because those things are expensive)
Finally, I think the athletes who will benefit the most are::: Volleyball and softball players for.. errr reasons.. Good for them and we will continue to rue the day we got rid of softball for LAx which I do not think has played a game yet.

P.S Baseball should form their own league with wooden bats and play in the summer ending at fourth of july.

To tie all of your thoughts together, the only one I know who could make big bucks off of social media is Lindsey Pelas doing a 3-point stance.

OTOH, she could go to grad school somewhere and male enrollment at that university would probably rise. 02-13-banana

And a more informative post by our friend at MAC Football Blog.

RE: Monday Musings July Edition
Can anyone confirm that any players who transfer now (except from FBS down to FCS, etc.) are not automatically granted the one-time waiver?

As we have been discussing, EMU has a number of CFB and MBB players who are in the transfer portals and not found a new home.

And I wonder what the FCS schools are doing? Other than Jackson State, e.g., most HBCU schools' football teams are far below FBS caliber and they could 'make a killing' grabbing FBS players. Am I right that maybe some of these unsigned FBS transfers will end up in FCS where they have always been able to transfer without sitout penalty??? What other choice do they have????

Oh the freedom of not being on scholarship and no longer having a free education. The grass isn't greener on the other side because there isn't any grass left on the other side.

In the game of musical chairs the, transfer rules, have become it not surprising some players are now left without a seat. Chaos does not always lead to good results for all.

Based on an article I just saw, players need to be in THE TRANSFER PORTAl by July 1.

They are free to make their decision now without penalty.

Hometown kid - he's from Pittsburgh and got drafted by the Pirates. Good for him. Best of luck.

The Unicorn finally bows out. He never won a MAC championship yet coached a long time at OU.

He was ALWAYS competitive, ran a clean program and you never heard a bunch of whining from him about his school's lack of investment in facilities. He had already won a National Championship at Nebraska and found he could comfortably live in Athens on a reduced yet substantial salary. Nobody ever considered his program a doormat and in fact his bowl performance was very good. It was an incredible run. I salute the guy!

EDIT: Covid strikes the N.Y. Yankees. Also Bradley Beal is in the protocol and will miss the Olympics.

Outbreaks will probably be localized to low vax states and local areas, but it could be a problem come fall and the CFB season.

Even a few cases can cause ramifications as far as the medical personnel are concerned.

You know how you avoid that issue? programs should require their players all be vaxxed - not exceptions.

So let me respond in two different ways:

1.) Thanks to 'At-Will Employment' a person can be fired for just about any reason so long as it isn't covered by any civil rights legislation. This would carve out an exception for people with medical reasons not to get vaccinated (such as allergies) or religion exemptions. Unless you have either of these exemptions - you gotta get the shot. WebMD has a good write up about this: https://www.webmd.com/vaccines/covid-19-...accination

2.) As has been litigated TO DEATH on this board - players aren't employees. They're students. Students at schools are required to get vaccinations at literally every level of schooling - why should this be any exception?

Agree. Whatever rules apply to the student body at EMU should apply to STUDENT-athletes, too.

Going geek but student-athletes are a subset of the full time EMU student body.

Using the term 'subset' indicates are not separate or apart but a part, but less than the whole, of the student body.

That said, EMU athletics, may opt to be more restrictive for student-athletes than the student body as a whole in certain circumstances, usually related to athletics. E.g., a school may take a hands off policy of marijuana usage subject to state law but an university or NCAA may have stronger rules. And certainly they may as far as performance enhancing drugs.

BYU limits how far you can go on dates so lets not act like requiring players get vaccinated is the HEIGHT of requirements.

Not sure of what you are saying.

Since this is JULY and the Olympics will start next week, I wish each participating country would have vaxed their athletes.

Why send an athlete to the Olympics only to get Covid in a high risk environment. Last time I checked basketball, like sex, is a high contact activity.
