How will NIL changes affect CAA schools?
Thought y'all would find our most recent article interesting; while we go through how we think NIL laws will impact William & Mary, much of what we talk about holds true for fellow CAA (and really, mid-major / FCS) schools across the country.

Curious also to hear folks' thoughts on these boards about the NIL changes & how you think it'll impact schools in the CAA.

Thanks for sharing. The NIL issue seems to me to be yet another great opportunity - and an opportunity to once again get left behind - for CAA schools. Innovative , outside of the box, administrators could really think of all kinds of ways to use this as a competitive advantage. Schools and conferences trying to find ways to say 'yes', and ways to help their players capitalize on it will benefit. Those whose default position is to wave the caution flag and act like compliance bureaucrats could find themselves becoming less relevant.

I haven't seen much in the way of creative thinking coming out of the CAA. Maybe this time it will be different. We will see....

(By the way. One possible issue is that your article seems to presuppose that NIL benefits would mostly be local for athletes in CAA schools like W&M. You may be right. But there is evidence that suggests athletes form schools with profiles no higher than ours are poised to benefit nationally from social media opportunities.

Blizzard, Goldsboro, and Cacok would have done very well in ILM if they had been able to make money off their likeness

The star player/brand on a successful UNCW team would clean up!

Can you imagine the Blizzard for DQ ads? And agree, all three of them, and a few others would have been able to do well. I do not think it's necessarily a bad thing for a school like UNCW that is the "only show in town". For a team like NU, Drexel etc. in big cities with a ton of comp, that's where it will hurt mids more IMO.

We did note in the article that both national & local brands could certainly partner with student athletes at schools such as W&M (or UNCW) -- mainly if said student athletes have impressive social media followings!

But yes, a new arms race has begun. The gap between the ultra rich and everyone else will widen even further; in my eyes, I see a future in which the P-5 breaks off to form their own super league -- where they no longer have their "semi pro" athletes playing against traditional student athletes of FCS / mid major programs.

Agreed. Higher competition areas will suffer more for the smaller guys because even regionally you are at a disadvantage. The schools by themselves will have an opportunity for large success. For big brand schools, the sky is the limit

Exactly right. This an OPPORTUNITY for UNCW to set itself apart for CAA level recruiting.

IMO, this gives midmajors the chance to level the playing field, if they can grasp that idea. Right now, pretty much the ONLY opportunity to have a financial benefit as a college athlete is at a big, Power 5 school. Well, that group already gets the pick of the best athletes with little competition from mids so they won't be getting players who are any different than they are getting now. You may see some P5 schools grasp this ring and leapfrog past others, but that's just shuffling the deck chairs on the cruise ship.

Now, even midmajor level players will have a chance to get some of that cheddar normally reserved for P5 players. All of the sudden a player can go where they want, sell their NIL, and be less reliant on the P5 school as the platfrom to market them. If a super talented player is from the Wilmington area, and want to stay local, the incentive to pack up and head elsewhere is less enticing, since they can stay home and make some money on marketing. Would NIKE be any less interested in a no lose HS/college/NBA prospect if they were at UNCW rather than Duke? Let's say a LeBron James came out of HS right now, and he wanted to stay and play college ball in Cleveland, why not Cleveland State if he had ties there?

The point is, this is the best chance midmajors have ever had to land big name players and lure them away from the current P5 powerhouses. They really won't lose much by making a different decision after this ruling.

So now, it's up to the midmajor schools to create a strategy to maximize the NIL opportunites for players they recruit, and then to sell that at the recruting table. UNCW is ideally located in WilmyWood and also has an up and coming film production program for students. Here is a chance to capitalize on both, and allow up and coming film makers the chance to show off their capabilites with UNCW student athletes in the starring role.

Talk about a win/win!
