It means the Flo deal is even worse because there's less exposure for our players?

Good point -- didn't think about that; anyone know when that deal expires? Have a hard time believing that will be re-upped.

I noticed a wide receiver at U Oklahoma is now charging $20 for a personal call on Cameo. I wonder if any Tribe players are trying that.

What does the NIL change mean for William & Mary?
I'm not exactly sure where NIL goes for college athletes. I can see hyped up blue chippers being able to cash in. Average D1 athletes? I'm not sure. Making money off phone calls to fans? I don't think that is the spirit of transferring NIL from the NCAA to the athlete. Perhaps if there is a college football or basketball video game all included school's athletes would get a piece. I'm not sure if video game makers are excited about paying out to use schools trademarks and then paying out royalties to thousands of athletes.
I'd imagine most action would come from local advertising. I can imagine the commercial now where Quinn Blair's favorite thing to recharge after a game is a delicious hot holly from Paul's Deli. Do the autograph signing sessions of the past go away in lieu of paid appearances?
College athletes hiring agents was a no no. What about now? Since they are allowed to market and profit off their likeness, why shouldn't they be allowed to hire an agent to set up marketing opportunities? That is the future of college recruiting. What schools have a player marketing division as part of the athletic department? You better believe top schools will pull out spreadsheets on official visits showing how much money and opportunities they got for their kids. If W&M coaches tell a kid that they encourage the ability to market and Richmond coaches tell a kid that they have staff working to provide marketing opportunities, the kid is going to Richmond.

I've noticed a couple of W&M athletes have tweeted their partnership with Barstool Sports. No clue what that entails.

I just read that Barstool sports is currently 36% owned (and soon to be 50%) by Penn national, a casino company listed on NASDAQ. There are supposedly plans to launch an online sports betting platform. I wonder if Barstool sports will be the vehicle for this, given its name recognition. Athletes getting into the memorabilia market with NFTs could be a big deal financially over the long-term.

Call me old fashioned, but how is college athletes getting in bed with a company with interests in sports betting not problematic? I'm sure Barstools interest in these college athletes is benign, but I fear the taped edges are being peeled off Pandora's box.

To continue your analogy, what's to stop Quinn from making some $$ by wearing a Paul's Deli logo on his uniform?

The uniforms are property of the university. Same reason that you don't see professional athletes adorning their uniform with their personal deals.

Rules have changed for the players, but I don't think they have been altered for the school's. If they have, perhaps W&M basketball could have Pauls as a sponsor. The public outcry isn't there for that, so I don't think it's coming. Who knows though? Perhaps schools will start to sue the NCAA to get in on the marketing action. Universities are able to cut deals with shoe companies now. It isn't a big jump to see the Kentucky Wildcats presented by Budweiser.

RE: What does the NIL change mean for William & Mary?
Here are the basic "lines" that the student-athletes and schools have to draw "inside of" in conjunction with the new NIL freedom.

1.Any compensation received by student-athletes for NIL activities represents a genuine payment for use of their NIL, and is not simply a disguised form of pay for athletics participation.

2.Schools and conferences play no role in a student-athlete's NIL activities (but they can ADVISE their student-athletes on NIL matters).

3.Student-athletes are not being compensated for uses of their NIL in situations in which they have no legal right to demand such compensation.

4.Schools or boosters are not using NIL opportunities as a recruiting inducement.

5.The role of third parties in student-athlete NIL activities is regulated.

6.Modernization of NIL rules does not interfere with NCAA members' efforts in the areas of diversity, inclusion or gender equity. (Title IX still has power)

Assuming those precursors are met, schools and conferences must then ensure they do not make endorsement payments themselves; cannot help locate, arrange or facilitate endorsement opportunities; or allow boosters to use such opportunities as a “recruiting inducement or a means of paying for athletics participation.”

The NCAA says they still have the power to punish schools for actions falling under the previous quote. We'll see how well that works.

All I can say is, it is going to get crazy before it gets sane again.

Sounds like most of scenarios I submitted are not allowed. I agree with Billymac that it will be very difficult to police and it sets the stage to be the wild west until the NCAA gets a handle on how to monitor and enforce these rules.

My impression of Barstool sports is that they don't care at all about college athletes, or much else aside from keeping their "bro" image. It's largely a cesspool run by some of the worst people that are internet famous.

You mean like Michigan State Spartans presented by Rocket Mortgage?

MSU backtracked from that quickly, but it's only a matter of time.

At least we get our logo back. Even the right colors more or less...

That sports betting platform already exists: Barstool Sportsbook! Pull open your phone & check the app store and you'll find it (it's not yet in every state, but it's live).

I assume the "dividing line" here is that Barstool is legally "separate" from Barstool Sportsbook; thus, "Barstool athletes" are representatives of the media entity that is Barstool -- and not reps of the sportsbook.

Though I understand the importance of the distinction, I think they're relatively safe for now, until some new rule is implemented.

Duke’s deal with “Just for Men” is only for one year.

I'm surprised no one has tried to slip in the old Waste Management sponsorship jab for W&M
