What gets me is that Chicago State per Jeff Goodman plans to honor the contract and he WAS NOT fired with cause. What's that mean? And is Chicago State going to be able to hire someone if they are already paying this guy? Interim, right?

Lance Irvin stepped away from coaching in 2020-21 due to concerns with COVID. Maybe the AD wants someone who will be more engaged with the program come hell or high water.

As long as Chicago State has been in the WAC most of the moves that they have made have been head scratchers to outside observers. Short of a good public explanation, this will wind up being another in that long chain. Management decision-making has been perplexing to say the least.

And they waited until July to do it! This could have happened in March. Everything they do is the opposite of what you should do.

I feel bad for the folks who actually follow Chicago St sports—-the folks who make decisions at that place have utterly mismanaged that program.

While I know no one here that has commented follows the program so it’s not surprising someone on the outside finds the move perplexing or uses it as an excuse to bash the program.
But Irvin and Charles have not been meshing for some time. They’ve even had some obvious Twitter exchanges towards one another. It appeared the writing was on the wall, and he was definitely not going to be back after his final year. Consequently, why keep him and the negativity around? What good will that do? By letting him go a year early, it’ll let Charles bring in his own person which is for the best. I don’t think this leadership has mismanaged much at all thus far. Perhaps there was poor communication with the baseball decision.. but not necessarily the decision itself.
I’m looking forward to the coach he brings in and trust it’ll be a quality hire even this late into the year.

It would save you from having to pay him to do nothing for a year?

Some things are a bit more important than money as shocking as that sounds.

It’s a dumb move to fire a guy and pay him anyway. Even if the AD and coach don’t get along. Even worse, when you do it on July 1. CSU will bring in some old hack and their hiring will make zero difference in results next year. CSU will finish last in the WAC and will be lucky to win 3 D1 games. And will pay 2 coaches to accomplish that.
You think we are here to bash CSU, we’re not. Their moves and results are pathetic, even for the bottom of D1. Nobody with any ambition will take head coaching jobs there. Who was the last CSU coach that got hired away by another D1 school?

RE: Chicago State fires coach on 7/1
I’m looking at this as I would any employment situation. If the employee is not performing well at their job, creates a poor work environment with their superior, and you feel you could bring on someone better in the position.. who wouldn’t want to get rid of said employee? I sure would in my job. Granted, they had to pay 110k for it. Well, they just made some of that money back in their FloSports deal and who knows what else is going on behind the scenes. So yes, I feel many people like to complain to just complain.
Does anyone believe this decision happened overnight? It’s likely been going on for months. And what else has been going on for months? CSU looking for additional coaches on their job listings. So once again, it’s entirely possible AD Charles already has a hire in place. It’s possible he already is familiar with multiple qualified candidates. And it’s possible they have no one at this time and this could drag on for a while.
Also, next year isn’t the end all be all. This is for the next 5-10 years.. not 2021-22. Shoot, no one expects CSU to be anywhere but the bottom of the WAC from what I’ve seen. So why waste another year on Irvin when you can get a new coach who is building relationships and planning for the programs success of the future. Not 2021-22.
Regarding coaches.. to name a few: Alyssa Gaudio, women’s golf coach now at Oakland. Marty Schiene, men’s golf coach at DePaul. Benjy Taylor, after being fired went on to coach at Hawaii. Tracy Dildy, after being fired went on to coach at Detroit. Bob Hallberg, men’s basketball coach went to UIC, Toby Rens, VB coach went to UMES and now is at Georgetown.

I get and understand everything you said. As a manger, I’ve been down this path before and all of your reasoning makes sense. My only question is why July 1? The timing is the issue with this decision.

Exactly. For a university, things like graduation rate are more important than athletics, which is why it's so surprising that Chicago State is incurring a needless expense.
