Who's the 66th team? I count 65 currently in the P5 conferences (counting Notre Dame).
There won't be a D2 anymore? Why would the other teams call themselves DIII at that point? They may as well call themselves a cool name instead.
BYU's supporters always will be willing to spend the kind of money necessary to stay big time. They're the 66th.
Any school offering scholarships of any kind will be facing the same issues.

Two Texas A&M football players were paid $10,000 each for exclusive interviews with an Aggie fan site. Running back Isaiah Spiller and safety Demani Richardson were paid by the website's sponsor, GreenPrint Real Estate Group.

Texags.com is paying two football players (RB Isaiah Spiller and S Demani Richardson) 10,000 dollars apiece for exclusive interviews (sponsored by a local real estate company).
While this is an example of a P5 school paying its athletes for basically just being a P5 athlete, you have to wonder if something like this will cause some ill will among teammates who are not being paid for interviews.
Sorry for the double post - guess I was a minute slow.

So put yourself in Dr. K and Coach Bloom and Pera's (and the rest of the coaches) chair and let us know what you would do to source, develop and leverage the NIL opportunities to gain a competitive advantage for Rice athletes to enhance Rice's athletic program(s). This is a tectonic shift in college athletics so it is an opportunity to have a real positive impact on these student-athletes and Rice athletics
While the University cannot directly arrange NIL opportunities for the Student Athlete I am certain many Universities are brainstorming with groups and encouraging the development of NIL opportunities for their student athletes. One key regulation is that prospective student athletes are not eligible until they are actually enrolled and also no NIL opportunity can exceed the time that the Student Athlete is on campus competing.
I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way this is a positive development/growth opportunity for small schools like Rice.
It's a positive for individual kids, sure. Anyone who wants to pay Rice athletes and recruits, knock yourselves out. The kids will appreciate it, I'm sure.
But other fans of other schools will be doing the same, and they outnumber us, vastly in most cases (especially w/r/t schools Rice people care about competing with and comparing themselves to).
So on a program level, that means there will be little to no ROI to paying Rice kids. The only ones doing it will be pure altruists or people with more money than sense.
I mean, *maybe* we theoretically have enough collective wealth and will to punch above our weight vs. CUSA and similar schools. We can probably buy better teams in most sports than Southern Miss and UTSA, for instance. Better than Texas, though? Or TCU, Baylor, A&M...? Or Stanford, Duke, Vandy, Northwestern...? Absolutely not. Never.
I think there's no question that the gulf between P5 and G5 will widen exponentially from here on out.
And if the best my money can buy is, say, a CUSA-competitive team with an impenetrable ceiling above that due to the increasing concentration of talent at schools with alumni bases that can out-resource us now that those resources have been officially unlocked, well then, I'll just hang on to my money, thanks.
So my interpretation of this response is that you believe that Rice should just give up because there is no way Rice can compete in this new college athletics landscape.
That's putting it alittle bluntly -- but I would prefer that Rice go Div III before participating in where this all appears to be heading. It's just a total divorce from the original idea of collegiate athletics. Not that it's likely of course, but the best that could happen would be for like-minded institutions in P5 (ND, Stanford, N'western, Vandy, Duke) to come to their ethical senses and reject the stench of today's NCAA. This could conceivably lead to a renewal of the original idea, and the creation of a 2nd generation NCAA....and leave the pro-development business league to UT, A&M, OU, LSU, et al.

Going Division III would not eliminate FIL payments - it just might lower the amounts in most places. But players at powers such as Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater would likely receive some benefits.

So the writing is on the wall for Rice, Tulsa, SMU, probably Tulane, and a lot of C-USA schools, etc. - Div. III

NWIH are the named schools giving up the TV money that comes with playing with the big boys. Rice wouldn’t either if it had access to it.

Alabama QB Bryce Young, who's expected to be the starter this fall, is approaching $1 million in NIL.

College sports are basically over. They're now de facto minor leagues.

Any lower classman QB who proves himself will look to transfer up to the big money leagues. We will have to catch guys coming down who want to have that one big year to be able to move back up to the big money.
And hopefully the big money through getting their MBA, JD, MD, or other advanced degree and then remember Rice when it is time to "give back".
