NIL Go Live Day Thread
Haven't seen much chatter on here about NIL and opportunities for student athletes to get (finally) paid. I guess we assumed Rice wouldn't have a lot of endorsement deals coming our way?

Well, it turns out several of our student-athletes have turned to a platform for remote-coaching called Vevolve. It's sort of a Cameo meets YouTube but for Coaching.

Vevolve is the brainchild of Jimmy "Baseball" Comerota that a few Rice alumni invested in (including me). We've spent the last few years building this platform for remote private coaching that will be an excellent resource for student athletes to engage with their fans and provide valuable coaching to next generation of Owls

Give it a look. Send some videos to be reviewed by Rice Student-Athletes and let me know if you have any questions.

A few rice associated coaches are here:
Jimmy Comerota - https://vevolve.com/coach/?7
Alex De Leon - https://vevolve.com/coach/?412
Carly Graham - https://vevolve.com/coach/?414
Justin Collins - https://vevolve.com/coach/?407
...there are more.

Will there be coaching on how to appropriately wear a rally cap (or water cooler)?

It's private lessons, so you can dictate what you are wanting to work on. And based on the last few years of Rice Baseball, some rally cap (cooler?) lessons couldn't hurt.

Per lesson rates are interesting: Jimmy Baseball $7; DeLeon $30; Carly $60; Collins $20.

Quincy Olivari is taking a different approach. He's asking people to sign up for Go Puff, which is a fast delivery service of food and other items.

Maybe we should keep a running tally of what the athletes are promoting. As long as it's been approved by the athletic department compliance office, it shouldn't be an issue to help them out.

Barstool announced they will sponsor any college athlete who emails them. No downside for them to send branded merchandise to a bunch of college campuses.

I think Chipotle and Go Puff (mentioned upthread) are doing similar campaigns; I'm sure there will be (lots) more.

Other things I am seeing athletes doing (esp. at bigger schools, like Illinois) are marketing personalized greetings on Cameo and being available to play video games on Yoke.

While I think the piece is poorly written, antagonistic, and more appropriate for the Quad, I think the overarching theme has always been present in this debate. There already are have’s and have not’s in college athletics - is this move going to widen that gulf?

Parity is important for a league to stay popular and compelling - will the NCAA modify other rules to try and level the playing field? Or will they not make any significant adjustments?

Student athlete’s have always been compensated something, but there are plenty who individually, or collectively, were getting the **** end of the stick. And something had to give.

I don't know if the article is garbage or not, but I fail to see how a back up tackle getting an education worth $60k/year is getting the short end of the stick compared to the starting QB, who gets an education worth $60k/year. Or do you think the QB should be getting a lot more, like in the real pros?

I would argue that all were getting the short end of the stick once the TV monies became real. Universities and conferences have become financial juggernauts for some and athlete compensation hasn't changed at all until now. I don't like how NIL is being applied, but the disparity between what universities are making off student athletes and what the athletes receive in return is appalling.

The author of that piece is John Ziegler, perhaps best known for being a vehement defender of Jerry Sandusky. Not Joe Paterno (though he also dabbled in that)...Jerry Sandusky, the child molester. I'm generally opposed to ad hominem attacks, but I can probably count on one hand the number of sports people whose opinions I'd be less likely to give consideration to. Plus, his arguments about shadiness in recruiting (it's always been shady), competitive balance in football (it hasn't existed for years), attractive teenagers are going to be taken advantage of (has this guy been on the internet for the past 10 years?), and the nature of college sports (the idea that the name on the front of the jersey means more than the players is ridiculous) are all weak or much more complicated than presented.

20 universities make money in athletics. This argument is just wrong.

As I said, student athletes have always been compensated something. There are plenty (as in, not all athlete’s) who are compensated far less than they are worth to the university.

Do you really think that statement was about the back up tackle? Or was it about the star QB? Or the national championship basketball team that increased admissions 2 fold? Or the track star missing out on endorsement deals?
