Penny Staying / LB Joining - what really happened here?
This was a little conversation in the big thread - but i think it deserves its own thread

Do you think Penny was on the verge of leaving (got an offer from the Magic) and he used the leverage to strong arm the Athletic Dept into approving the Larry Brown hire?

I sure do. The timing is too perfect to be a coincidence

discuss!

I think the hire was already set to go. Penny used the interview to gain insight and to get the department to agree on some minor details.

Word - i realized i wrote that poorly. In my OP that was a hypothetical, don't want to represent it as fact.

But - I do think he got an offer haha

I think Penny ultimately wants to be an NBA coach. He was legitimately interested in an opportunity that opened up and was able to leverage his past with Orlando into an interview. He was far more impressive in the interview than Orlando was expecting but ultimately they felt it was too risky to offer him. Had he been offered the job, he very well might have taken it.

In the meantime, Penny didn’t have any really expectation he’d get offered, so he continued to work this job as if it was where he was going to be for the foreseeable future. So when it got out he wasn’t in serious consideration, he moved forward with officially bringing in Brown, which had been unofficially going down since before Orlando was even a thing.

I agree that He most likely leverage leaving because within a hour of him announcing he’s staying, the LB decision was announced. This is someone he wanted from the very beginning as part of his overall plan and held a temporary assistant position open this past season just for Larry. It make sense

Penny wants to be the next coach that wins a title in NCAA and NBA.
Oops, NIT title doesn't count though, right? heh ...
In all seriousness, Penny has now got the guy on the bench that he's always wanted, that accomplished that feat

RE: Penny Staying / LB Joining - what really happened here?
My gut feeling is that Penny leveraged Orlando in order to get more leeway for Brown. See off campus recruiting. (Ie the tension between Laird wanting to protect his career and weighing the advantages disadvantages to him and Penny wanting what might be the best basketball mind in the world on his staff)

And…. Being considered for a NBA head coaching job is a huge plus as a big time college recruiter.

Penny played this situation to his advantage

Recruiting advantage-now and future
Leverage for Brown situation - now
He puts himself in the mix for future NBA jobs- future

I would agree with all of this. I wouldn't think Penny would just use the Orlando position as leverage against Memphis, I think he saw an opportunity and, while timing was not necessarily ideal for him, went for it. In an ideal world, Penny would not have stirred the pot and would've been 100% committed to Memphis for now but when your possible dream job opens up you don't just ignore it. If you don't try, there's a 100% chance you're not getting the job.

Had the Magic position not become available for him, I think we would still have seen the LB announcement, but realizing that there was a chance for Penny to leave, the Memphis admin expedited the hire.

My guess is the Magic job will be open again in about 3-4 years.

I don't recall Penny ever saying that. I mean, he had his dream job playing in the NBA for 15 years.

Penny has clearly said it was Dez's dream for Penny to win a state title, an NCAA title, and an NBA title.
