Do our casual fans really realize the difference between Tarleton State and Houston Baptist? Do they itch to see Nicholls State over UTech? Probably not.

This all comes down to the league establishing itself and raising the bar with marquee wins, getting multiple bids across sports, etc. Outside of football which is going to take some time - the chances are higher for that in the WAC than they were in the Southland. And you better believe, we'll be tracking this all!

Just a quick glance at the MBB schedules and in particular home games at WAC arenas shows that the league is already light years ahead of the SLC.

The only school that can “complain” about the schools in the WAC is NMSU. Everyone else is now with the same or better than they were before. NMSU once played with UNLV, Utah State, Nevada, and others. Now, they’re playing with Dixie State and Stephen F Austin. If you were to tell an NMSU fan in 1990 that they would be playing with those schools in 30 years, they would have tried to commit you to an insane asylum.

There’s likely 0.00% chance that any SHSU fan would not renew their season tickets because SHSU is playing Tarleton and Dixie instead of Northwestern State and HBU. It’s just very unrealistic.

RE: 7/1/21 - Texas4 Entry into WAC
I would like to see the WAC become a multi-bid conference in basketball; among other sports. However, besides that one goal, this new WAC conference will be much more marketable to the masses than the old WAC or Southland. If the new conference produces multiple strong teams, people will want to see it. And, hopefully the media will pay the WAC to televise it. The old Southland maxed out its' growth. This new WAC has a lot of up and coming programs. You balk at playing Tarleton and Utah Tech but those programs are better setup for future success than the ones that remain in the Southland.

We have some Sam Houston fans that will be slow to come around. It's not all of them but there are some.

I think their biggest issues are the football league (leaving an 'established league' for one that is going to take a hot second to grow - long-term, I think the WAC will be more superior to the SLC and quite frankly, possibly in a short period of time) and baseball (though Sam Houston has fallen off a bit in that category but at the end of the day, if you win 40+ games at Sam with the schedule that program has - you should be at-large worth anyway).

If you’re a casual FCS football fan, you don’t know (or care) for the difference between Nicholls State or Utah Tech. But if you’re a casual college basketball fan, you will definitely get excited to see your U play games (from a SHSU fans perspective) against Tarleton or UTRGV because you are more likely to interact with their alumni then you would, say a UCA. I think this move is a plus across the board.

Lamar, Sam and SFA could say the same thing as back in the day ULL (Rajun Cajuns), UL Monroe and La Tech were all part of the SLC. McNeese was much stronger during that time period also as they produced a future NBA all-star. La Tech had Karl Malone during that time period also.

Sam and SFA came into the Southland after La Tech and UL Lafayette left the conference. Lamar was in SLC during those days before coming back after time in Sun Belt/American South.

Sam and SFA did play with UL Monroe but largely as a non football SLC school

ACU’s football program is Houston Baptist’s without the CVS Pharmacy. Naturally your fans would rather see a D2 school than a program with a fair amount of success at the FCS level considering their short time here! Nobody likes to see their team lose. This of course has nothing to do with the fact that Tarleton State is a closer and larger school with much more history against ACU.

UIW is what we were told ACU would become when The Bible 3 joined the Southland. Maybe if the Wildcats didn’t blow every year this new football conference would look a bit better.

And I’ve HONESTLY never trolled!

So, Boy Wonder what was so great about the Southland Conference that makes you so disheartened about the WAC?

You mentioned Tarleton and Dixie Tech or whatever their new name is. Hmmm both rapidly growing schools vs Nichols, UNO, UIW, HBU, NWern St SE La TAMUCC and Mcneese.

Please explain to me how this arrangement WAS SO GREAT!!!!
If you truly believe this was a better situation you need serious counseling for your state of mental health.

Oh, btw, I actually live in SE Texas not far from Lamar and a higher up in Admin told me that both the Prez and AD were not sure at first about the WAC move but both said to him privately STAYING without the other three would be a disaster for the University. But, I’m sure you know more than they do as well.

At least some at Lamar have been looking to a path to FBS football since before the school restarted the football program. I'm not saying it is a smart move, but I'm also not saying it is a bad move. We will just have to wait and see. One thing I do know is that returning to the SLC from the American South or Sunbelt if it had changed names yet was a really bad move.

Same at Sam. I’ve worked for Sam in multiple capacities over the last decade and the desire to go FBS has existed in one capacity or the other. This move by Sam was about being with universities who value and invest in athletics and who are aligned in where they see their athletic department headed. Like TT said, some of the more passionate among our fan base aren’t thrilled about the move but I think if you give it a few years they’ll come around.

We’re a football (first) school. And in the short term it the move doesn’t necessarily benefit football. But give it a few years and see what happens. I view the move as one that’s focused on tomorrow, rather than today.

Unlike the WAC, the Southland is a good FCS football conference. SHSU is a football school, not a basketball school. That’s it. That is what’s so great about the Southland, sir.

UCA is a consistent Top 10 team and has made the playoffs three times in the past five years. Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls have been good sustainably over the past 5 years. McNeese State is a historic program that holds high standing the subdivision. Incarnate Word has a conference title recently and is an up and coming program.

Instead of that we’re playing Big Lie flunkies and D2 move ups.

Better not see any complaining from Sam fans when the playoff committee won’t give us home games! Our schedule is going to stink.
