Wow, I think this is a huge step in the right direction. One thing I wonder though, all of these companies typically have a set amount of dollars allotted for sports marketing, so I wonder what the ripple effect will be and which segments of people/advertising are going to lose advertisement dollars.

I believe, ultimately, the revenue sports will pull away from colleges and universities and be operated as separate entities… the mission’s of the two will simply become incompatible. Perhaps they’ll pay the schools to use their name and provide the a percentage of the revenue, but they’ll have to separate.

Yep. Look at the possibility of Nike EYBL expanding and taking the place of intercollegiate basketball. Under Armour and adidos could have competing leagues.

I think little changes in football but basketball may be in for big changes.

If kids start making 10 mil… I can’t see them being bound by university policy.

RE: New NIL Discussion
One thing for sure. Whether temporary or long-term, the NIL is a huge lifeline for college sports. Especially college basketball. Between the G league and the overtime elite league colleges were about to be missing out on all of the top prospects. Even 3 star prospects. This immediately puts college basketball back in the running for top prospects. The fact that this is just now happening is no coincidence whatsoever.

College basketball doesn’t need the top “1 & done” prospects to survive. Honestly, as a fan, I’d prefer those kids go ahead and go the g-league route.

I feel ya. And I tend to agree. Even 3 star prospects were about to be joining these new developmental & oversees leagues though. That’s what got me worried. I think the NIL fixes that problem.

SMU has deep pockets....

$2 Billion endowment...So they definitely have alumni with some cash.

If the 80s showed us anything, it’s what that program is capable of with some deep pockets behind it.

If that’s the case, Harvard and Yale will be dominating recruiting as their endowments are as much as 18 times SMU’s.

If you tied recruiting to endowment, SMU would be behind Rice, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Richmond, the University of Wisconsin—at Madison, and Boston College.

The deep pockets that endow these universities, including SMU, don’t even consider the athletic departments.

I think the point is that SMU clearly had deep booster pockets and boosters that have historically been interested in competitive football teams... Yale and Harvard do not have alumni that seem to share that same interest.

Would help if we had a basketball HC who had strong ties to a sports apparel company - especially a YUGE one like, say, Nike...
