Yeah, that's odd. I remember when Paul Haynes' contract was disclosed it had incentives in there for in-state recruits, which of course is a cheaper full ride when you consider the out-of-state pricing. Perhaps Lewis realizes there's too many schools chasing the same kids in Ohio so he wants to hit nearby states that are more wide open and still have talent. I always wondered why we got away from western PA as Pitt has a lot of talent and isn't that far away; our 3 PA recruits include 1 from central PA and the other 2 further east. Also odd given this Lewis quote:

Quote:Lewis said. “Northeast and Central Ohio have great high school football. So does Western Pennsylvania. I thought I could put together a great staff. Why not Kent State?”

Quote:Paul Haynes' contract

Incentives
National title bonus: $75,000 for qualifying OR $100,000 for winning
CFP semifinal win: $50,000
CFP semifinal appearance: $25,000
Conference title bonus: $10,000
Conference regular season division title bonus: $5,000
Misc athletic-based incentives: $1,000 for each D-IA win after sixth; $10,000 if more than 60% roster is from Ohio; also has potential for $5,000 in ticket sale bonuses
Coach of the year award bonus: $5,000 for MAC Coach of year;
Academic bonuses: $1,000 for team GPA over 2.5; $2,000 more for GPA over 2.75; $5,000 more for GPA over 3.00.

When looking up Coach Lewis' contract terms I could not find any mention of Ohio recruits, not that it isn't there, just didn't see it.

Quote:Sean Lewis' contract

Bonuses

Lewis’ salary and his marketing obligations show Kent State is making a significant investment in its football program for the Lewis era. That investment also presents itself in the potential bonuses in his contract.

During Thursday's press conference in which Kent State formally introduced him, Lewis included in his goals a MAC East title, a MAC championship and an appearance in a New Year’s Six bowl game. Each accomplishment would earn him a bonus.

A division title would net him $10,000, while a conference title would instead give him $15,000. Lewis gets another $100,000 if his loftiest dream comes true and Kent State is still playing on New Year’s Day, like Western Michigan two seasons ago.

And just in case the most hopeful of Kent State fans are wondering, Lewis would get a $250,000 bonus if the Flashes win a national championship.

Lewis also receives a $10,000 bonus if Kent State wins seven games next season, something they have only done once in the past 30 years. Under Haynes, the Flashes never won more than four games.

Kent State will also award Lewis a bonus if ticket sales increase.

I'm sure they try to get in-state players, too. All you can do is recruit and offer.

Hmm a $10K bonus for winning the lame MAC East. With the university still slashing budgets and staff left and right, wonder where that money is coming from.

It’s the going rate and a good problem to have to pay out, this isn’t exactly Nick Saban’s bonus clauses and I’m sure they’re not as rich as his peers. Every school is going through budget issues, and I’m guessing Coach Lewis is still in the lower half of earners despite the recent extension. Plus they saved much more than that when Joel took his highest paid AD in the MAC title with him and they backfilled with a cheaper replacement.

RE: 2022 Football Recruiting
Grabbed a QB late, Devin Kargman from NJ. Seemed to have a handful of offers out there including Buffalo, Maryland, West Virginia, Texas A&M, Vandy, VaTech, Temple, Rutgers and FIU. His brother was a QB at WMU and is in the transfer portal.

Two OT’s from the same HS. That’s interesting.

Dude... Winning the MAC East is not something we've done very much. Maybe we get to at least 3 MAC east titles before calling it a lame accomplishment?

RE: 2022 Football Recruiting
We always seem to have a recruiting reveal party as well as releases prepared touting our latest class. Did somebody lay off the staff that coordinates these? Theres nothing regarding the class and the last article posted to the football website is from the 5th. I understand the team is preparing for the bowl game, but those coaches found ways to hit the road the last week to secure the verbals they had and announce their signatures, but there no press release?

I have no idea how accurate 247 Sports is, but Kent State's recruiting class in ranked only 7th.

When it comes to the MAC the materials is half-a$$ed. Half of the recruits don’t have any stars and we signed 21 with only 18 showing. We have a larger number of recruits without any stars which skewers the total and averages. Those rankings also give more weight to quantity over quality. You can 5 open scholarships and sign 5 blue chippers and be ranked behind a school with 21 signings of terrible players whose rankings defaulted to 2 stars.

Thanks, Polish Hammer. I was skeptical.

Kent State could win the National Championship 49-0 against OSU and people on here would complain still, not just on this message board, but others. Find something to appreciate, it will make your life and others better
