The Ohio Law specifically prohibits that, or gambling or adult businesses, and I would assume most of the other state laws do too. Haven't reviewed Michigan's to see what it says.

I assume that is probably true. I just checked and Michigan law does prohibit Cannabis endorsements. So my post is facetious at best. But I believe this NIL deal will open up all sorts of unforeseen issues. Certain universities have their “official” beers so why not believe that all sorts of endow scenarios could happen.

The whole thing is unstable. I don’t like it at all. I know many on this board do but I think it ruins everything I naively came to love about college sports. The idea of a “student athlete “ was created to offset the ringer issues that people associated with college sports until the 60’s. It never really truly happened in the major sports. Too much money so I guess the NIL just legitimizes the hidden “ bag man”.

There are many good reasons for the NIL and the constitution is on its side but I still do t like it. Amateurism is dead.

Will be interesting to see how UT and MAC (and other Group of Five) athletes benefit

As stated on Twitter UT has announced their NIL marketing relationship with Opendorse. The marketing name is “Liftoff”

I was initially concerned about the NIL legislation. Anything has potential to be abused. But, A scholarship wrestler should be able to work summer wrestling camps to earn some money. A young lady on the golf team should be able earn money for some TV commercials in Toledo for a LPGA event, or any local business. Some of the examples in the Ohio State article reflect students starting their own business. Most of these examples are great opportunities for the students based on their expertise. Fair market value should always be applied from fees paid. Would it be better for a business to pay a professional actor for a commercial spot, or a UT student? One of the concerns I’ve heard about current college students is the lack of interest to find a summer job, or some part time work while in school. Using NIL could really provoke some creativity. We’ll see how it goes.

I only see the surface of it but this seems same-ol in a different cloak. Why is the university making marketing arrangements for students? Still seems pimp and whorish.

I would say they are technically giving them access to help if they want it. Not sure the U is paying for it. Could be wrong. I think the student pays for the service if they wish to use it.

They aren't making marketing arrangements for the athletes, they are providing them access to a company that helps the athletes figure out how to deal with all this stuff. They are doing this for a number of reasons likely. One, Opendorse provides tools to help automate compliance reporting, which is required, and so benefits both the athletes and the school. Also, by helping educate them, it decreases the chance some athletes will get hooked into fly-by-night promoters or unscrupulous agents which would be bad for everybody. Also, if they don't help the UT students out, that will put the university at a recruiting disadvantage to the schools that do.

Also worth noting that all NIL agreements require approval of Athletics-students can not endorse products that all ready have exclusive UT contracts (we are a Coke product campus, student NIL can not be with Pepsi), also allows UT oversight of services and products that they deem inappropriate.
