Anyone have any reliable nationwide numbers on this? I say "reliable" because I suspect that many of the reports are agenda-driven.

Okay, I'll bite. Knowing full well you'll find a way to say that AP, Reuters, and Johns Hopkins aren't reliable.

AP: Nearly all COVID deaths in US are now among unvaccinated

Quote:An Associated Press analysis of available government data from May shows that “breakthrough” infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 107,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That’s about 1.1%.

And only about 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths in May were in fully vaccinated people. That translates to about 0.8%, or five deaths per day on average.

Johns Hopkins: Delta Variant: New Data on COVID-19 Transmission by Vaccinated Individuals

Quote:1. Vaccines remain highly effective at preventing severe disease.
2. Breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals remain uncommon.
3. The majority of new COVID-19 infections in the US are among unvaccinated people.

Reuters: How the Delta variant upends assumptions about the coronavirus

Quote:In the United States, which has experienced more COVID-19 cases and deaths than any other country, the Delta variant represents about 83% of new infections. So far, unvaccinated people represent nearly 97% of severe cases.

Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious diseases doctor at the University of California, San Francisco, said many vaccinated people are "so disappointed" that they are not 100% protected from mild infections. But the fact that nearly all Americans hospitalized with COVID-19 right now are unvaccinated "is pretty astounding effectiveness," she said.

Oh wow, here we go again with all this stuff.

Seriously all, anyone that wants one the 3 vaccines has had every opportunity to get it by now. So at this point I see it as a personal responsibility issue -- if folks chose not to get vaccinated they have accepted any risks.

It seems pretty simple to me:
- If you have been vaccinated there is no need to wear a mask unless you want to and think you mask looks cool
- If you have not been vaccinated, you should probably wear a mask right now, but if you don't I don't really care b/c I have been vaccinated.

I just want to sit in my normal season seats for football and bball instead of finding out week to week what corner JMU has deemed the best option and stuck me there.

Can the moderators please just create a COVID thread and dump all this crap in there and not muddy up threads where I thought we were actually discussing football and leadup to the season.

Agreed . Why this crap got brought up in the 1st place I don‘t know. Guess we need a new pre-season/summer camp thread now.

Agreed . Why this crap got brought up in the 1st place I don‘t know.

Why is it brought up? Really? It is brought up because it is still relevant as hell and could impact what this board is all about - JMU sports.

All I asked is if anyone had any evidence regarding what percentage of the current wave of Covid patients had or had not been vaccinated. bjk was the only one to offer any evidence (Thanks, bjk!). BDK and others just bitched about the RELEVANT question being asked. Just DAMN!

I really, really want to know if there is a large segment of the current Covid wave that has been vaccinated, and if so, what does that mean? Does that mean that the vaccine is ineffective or that the testing is flawed or that this is normal? After all, it is not unusual for those who receive flu shots to contract the flu.

I found this article from Oregon in the Statesman Journal.

In June, it was recorded and reported that 8% of new Covid cases in Oregon were among those fully vaccinated and that 6% of Covid deaths were among those fully vaccinated.

Those numbers do not seem shocking. However, in the month of July, 19% of new Oregon Covid cases were among those fully vaccinated and 9% of Covid deaths were among those fully vaccinated. Not a promising trend!

As for me and my immediate family, we received the vaccine early and have had no issues. On the other hand, I have two cousins (father and son), both of whom have been admitted to the hospital with Covid within the past two weeks (one is still there) and both of whom were unvaccinated. They are getting well but I was told by their immediate family members that for a while it was "touch and go."

I am as confused by this pandemic now as I was in the very beginning, and forgive me for asking the question, BDK, but I don't believe any amount of stats you post will make Covid go away. It is still RELEVANT!

Like everyone else, I just want things to return to normal.

This is relevant to actual football discussion but is involved with Covid....Does anyone know what the Uni/CAA protocol is expected to be for the upcoming season with regards to testing? Are vaccinated players exempt from tests? Are unvaccinated players required to take more precautions and be regularly tested (a la the NFL)? What happens if 5 vaccinated players test positive but have no symptoms like what happened to the Yankees recently? Would they cancel/postpone games again if a team had an outbreak of sorts or would the schools just play next man up?

I'm hopeful this delta variant spike is short lived like in India (sharp increase and then sharp decrease) but who really knows. I can't imagine the season will go forward perfectly but definitely won't be as absurd as last season.

Is normal even possible again? This latest wave is showing that the vaccines are good against keeping you out of the hospital/dying but not as effective as originally hoped at prevention or reducing transmission.

Tough situation for college athletics as many student athletes are probably from families that are skeptical of vaccines. Also, they're not really at much serious risk if they came down with covid as they are young and in great shape. Just playing football at the D1 level probably leads to more short and long term health risks to them than covid does.

It sucks to think that at one point back in June the case rate in the US was only 12K per day (7 day average) and is now back up around 100k/day. What a damn tease that was.

RE: 2021 summer preseason thread
With respect to football, I thought I saw that Tyshawn Wyatt, redshirt frosh, was in the starting line-up at left guard. He's an enormous human being that didn't play much in the spring, but evidently has made some strides. He's close to 340 pounds. O-line, as per Madia article, was one area perhaps lacking depth. From the outside looking in, seems like Cignetti has left no stone unturned in terms of solidifying and bolstering this roster, offensive line included, in an effort to win that national title this season.

O-line is where I have been most impressed with Cig's recruiting.

We have a guard pushing 340!? Dang! What are tackles weighing, 370?

I too believe JMU has the potential to go 15-0 and win it all. I will be surprised if we aren’t in the championship game.

I don't think the Stats preseason poll has been posted yet, but came out yesterday if anyone hasn't seen it yet. Soft Houston #1 and JMU #2 of course, wasn't sure how many first place votes to expect for JMU but I kinda thought it'd be more.

Their schedule doesn't really look like any opportunities to lose as usual, but if JMU stays undefeated I would think we'd jump them before too long and go in to selection Sunday ranked #1 before the committee ends up finding a reason to give us a 6 seed or something.

I will bite.....one would assume since they are JMU students......unvaccinated football players would be subject to the exact same weekly testing just as any other student would be. I see no rationale for anything further.

agree this is one large human being that could be a serious road grader.

Also Cig has done an excellent job bringing in folks to bolster depth and create competition for playing time.

i think Cojo will be just fine. Will he have a bad game most likely, every QB does from time to time. But once he adjusted to being QB1 he looked impressive compared to any other FCS qb in the land.

I predict it will be pretty tight between Kyle Adams and Bentley for QB2.....Adams has a much higher ceiling but Bentley is probably more of a given and this point going into camp.

WAC:
2021:
-Texas 4’ (SHSU, Steven F Austin, Lamar, Abilene Christian) joins. Apparently the Texas 4 wasn’t going to join till 2022, but the Southland Conference gave them the boot early.
-Dixie & Tarleton are still transitioning & are still playoff ineligible).
2022: S Utah joins.
2024: UT Rio Grand Valley, a startup, joins).

ASUN
2021: 3 new football members (UCA, EKU, JSU).
2022: KSU & N Alabama join.

The 2021 ‘WAC/ASUN Challenge’ pits the 7 WAC and ASUN playoff eligible schools playing each other. They petitioned the NCAA for the winner of the 7 playoff eligible schools to get an AQ, and got it. Figure SHSU gets the AQ and could be 1-2 at large.

But now the Southland, down to 6 football members, and the OVC, down to 7 teams, are probably now both 1 bid leagues, as opposed to the usual 2-3 teams in from the Southland, and the OVC often got a 2nd team in.

In reference to the above, here’s how I see the playoff breakdown for the 11 AQ conferences/22 of the playoff spots:
CAA: 4
MVFC: 4
Big Sky: 4
So-Con: 2
WAC/ASUN: 2
Southland: 1
OVC: 1
Big South: 1 (Maybe Monmouth and KSU both get in)
NEC: 1
Patriot: 1
Pioneer: 1

Last 2 At Large could go anywhere except those last 3 conferences. If anyone gets 5 will probably be the MVFC..
