Supreme Court unanimously rules against NCAA about player compensation

Handwriting is definitely on the wall. UNCW - and everyone else - will have to figure out what the nature of their programs will be, because the economic situation between the haves and have-nots is going to get a lot wider.

All these sports pundits like Jay Bilas don't give a shot about Mid-Majors.

RE: Supreme Court unanimously rules against NCAA about player compensation
I hope good comes from this in that the NCAA moves back towards a true student athlete and pro sports allows players to jump immediately or go through appropriate channels ie a true minor league. I hope these schools break apart at the top and become part of the G-league and a true minor league system is formed. I dont think any longer can the NBA continue exploiting and not footing the bill for minor leagues.

More likely, it will become the wild west at the top and mid majors wont have the means to compete. We collectively will be the Leicester Cities of the the premier league. If all of the stars align, you can have one great season and shock everyone, but most of the time you are at the bottom fighting for survival but clearly a level below the top teams and you are just happy to be on the same field/court

It's already pretty close to being that way. The facilities gap alone between really high-major programs and the others is pretty jarring when you see it up close. As this ruling plays out, programs will have to spend more and more just to stay where they are - like the "Red Queen" in Alice in Wonderland running faster and faster just to stay in place.

I don't begrudge players getting their beaks wet. The problem is the MOST programs aren't in a position where the coaches and everybody but the players are getting fat. Most programs are struggling to stay relevant in DI in an arms race they can't afford to wage.

Universities will have the same ability to sue the NCAA for anti trust activities as the students. The whole system is rigged to benefit a few.

Hurts mid-majors and non-revenue sports for sure. But it still is a decision that was necessary. Any decision that takes money out of the hands of the NCAA and administrators and puts it in the hands of the athletes themselves is ultimately a good thing, with the important caveat being that it needs to be enforced properly, where the NCAA/Administrators aren't simply taking whatever they want from smaller schools and non-revenue sports to make up for their losses.

I'll side with the P5 kids generating millions over the NCAA/Administrator any day. NCAA amateurism is dead and we finally need to embrace that. Moving away from amateurism didn't kill the Olympics (though we'll never get another Miracle situation again, to be fair), after all.

The easiest solution, to me, is that the big-time players be allowed to make money off sponsorships, video games, jersey sales, etc. Thus, they're just receiving money they're otherwise not allowed to accept and get their schools punished when they do so. That would protect the smaller schools and non-revenue guys, because all you're doing is allowing the biggest athletes to get money from the private sector, not stealing money away from other athletes/schools.

What’s to stop NCAA teams from stop using their likeness altogether for promotional things and it being sort of a non issue going forward?

To be fair the only reason we had a Miracle situation in the first place was because communist countries were bastardizing the meaning of "amateurism"
With the fall of communism we were never going to get another "Miracle" situation anyways.

I agree with you completely that athletes should be able to make money off their likeness. You can argue about whether athletes are better off at being taxed, salaried employees versus getting a tax free full ride at a 20 - 100k/year university. But you cannot argue the NCAA became facist like at making sure the NCAA and universities were the only ones profiting off the student athlete name and image.

It was/is wrong and immoral

Really a chicken/egg situation. These athletes walk into a marketing machine that puts them on national tv in front of a built in fan base. The NBA then benefits when they bring a fan base from college along with them. You can see the difference between the NBA/NFL vs. MLB. MLB doesn't really build their players through colleges, so their players lack that fan attachement from college. I think it limits their brand.

Good point.

Speaking of baseball, the NCAA prohibits a baseball player from accepting payment to give your kid a coaching lesson.

I feel ya Solo but you could have just asked Proff and he probably would give it to ya for free.

Seriously, I do understand the situation and there should be some type of compensation given. It doesn't have to be much but some. There will be great inequities if the margin gets huge so that has to be considered as well. They do get a full ride in hoops and football for example so IMHO it needs to be somewhat limited. Some is good and fair, a ton is not good perhaps.

This ruling along with the new transfer rules are nails in the coffin for mids and some major programs that don't have a great deal of money and or facilities to compete in the new age of pro college sports. Might be time for mid major athletic programs to cut teams back again if they are going to try to compete for players in mens basketball and football.

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/stor...-difficult

"Stephanie Rempe and a small group of staff members at LSU have spent several hours each day in June diving down a seemingly endless series of rabbit holes.

Rempe, who serves as the executive deputy director of athletics/chief operating officer of the LSU athletic department, pieced together a task force more than a year ago to prepare the Tigers for what she believes will be the most transformative change to hit college sports since Title IX arrived nearly a half century ago. "

Yep. This is really going to change things in ways we can't even envision yet. Being able to make $$ from your name, image, and likeness is going to really change a lot about where you want to go to school. Just going to a school that can set you up as a YouTube personality alone can make you pretty wealthy.

On the other hand, mid-majors who are creatively thinking of ways (cough, cough) to figure out how to help players make NIL bank could get a recruiting edge. The difference between programs with Athletic Directors who act like NCAA compliance officers and those who see this as an opportunity to think outside the box could be stark.
