I think the NCAA will break into a "money" league and a "scholarship league".

That would be nice in theory, but how long before the scholarship league players want to get “paid”? I’d give it less than a few days. And I don’t see how the NCAA could say no after this ruling.

I think the solution is one of two things...

1) take a paycheck or take a scholarship... one or the other. The problem with this is that SOME athletes will be paid a lot more than the value of a scholarship. MOST (almost all) would not. If you're getting paid to play football (and are paying for school yourself) MAYBE you don't attend class??

2) Turn the spring league into a football minor league... If you want to attend college while doing that, go ahead... but you don't play amateur sports if you're being paid a market value for doing so... Amateur sports is what the NCAA is supposed to be. If you don't want to be an amateur, don't do so... just like basketball and baseball.

I STRONGLY favor the latter and for the overwhelming majority of players (like 90%) they would be vastly better off with the latter. Rice should push HARD for that and the NCAA should be strongly on board with it.

I think players in the "paid" league will no longer have to be students, any more than janitors or librarians. They will just be employees with the job title of "player".

At least that will reduce the need for basket weaving courses and recreation majors.

This... But I'd make them play for a non-NCAA team

National COLLEGIATE Athletic Association

If p5 wants to go that direction, they can... but lets OUT them as not being COLLEGE athletes... merely athletes that a college pays for.... some of whom will play sports.

Trust me guys... the number of players that will get more from this than they would from a scholarship won't be as much as many think. It will be more like the NFL where a dozen or so players make up the majority of the salary pool, and lots of other guys are making near their minimum

And that fact of life will then be learned by participants far earlier in their life.

To your point about #2, I feel like this is how baseball is currently set up and it works well (IMO). People who want to go pro out of high school have a clear path offered to them - get drafted and join the minor leagues where you can cut your teeth and maybe make it to The Show. If not, you join a college team and are going to play there for at least 3 years.

For football and basketball, a viable "minor league" needs to be created. I think we're starting to see that in basketball, be it overseas, the G League, or that program that is starting up that pays players (I forget the name). NCAA needs to bite the bullet soon and get rid of one and done and go the route of baseball.

Football has never really been able to cultivate a minor league that works and provides top tier athletes the ability to play and get paid right away.

Holy crap, lol. Agreed!

I think the NFL has suckled off of the NCAA teet for long enough. Let them set up a d-league and fund it and sell it and let college be college as you suggest. One way or the other.... copy the other sports leagues.

Also as Tanq notes... I think the fact that few people watch the d-leagues speaks volumes... but there is still a lot of money in it because of the money in the bigs. Let San Antonio or El Paso or Beaumont/Port Arthur or OKC have a D-league team and make it their own.

After seeing the money generated by Andy Murray's NFTs, I'm wondering if this might be the chosen route for college athletes.

In an season-ending e-mail to the "Rice Family" today, JK included this link to a three-page "Name, Image and Likeness FAQ for Fans/Boosters" document. It was prepared by the Rice compliance team to help Rice fans understand stipulations to the NIL process stemming from the new NCAA legislation regarding the ability of our student-athletes to profit from their NIL, which went into effect on July 1, and also Texas laws:

https://riceowls.com/documents/2021/7/1/...f?id=19982

Additional questions can be directed to the Rice Athletics Office of Compliance Services (ricecompliance@rice.edu).

Miami's D'Eriq King (formerly from UH and Manvel HS) has signed an NIL deal with the Florida Panthers of the NHL, basically being paid to attend games and perform public appearances promoting the hockey team. I can't imagine a UH (or Rice) athlete could swing a similar deal with one of the professional teams in Houston, but I guess this is something college athletes in a pro town should pay attention to.

RE: Impact on NCAA
Gavin Wimsatt, 4-star QB recruit in Kentucky, has elected to graduate high school early and enroll at Rutgers immediately because he's been offered a "six-figure" sponsorship deal. His high school semester already started; he finishes his senior year 2-1. This all was announced late last night right after he beat Daviess County HS in a 49-42 shootout. The Rutgers semester actually started last Wednesday, but the add/drop period continues through the 10th.

Seems like we won't know for sure which of the major school recruits are staying in high school until mid-September.
