OT - Supreme Court Rules Against the NCAA
It might be behind a paywall, but the NCAA lost its case and "Modest Payments" can be made to athletes beyond direct educational expenses without threatening their amateur status.

Great, the Court got the obvious ruling correct! Good for them!

"The Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Monday that the N.C.A.A. cannot bar relatively modest payments to student-athletes in the name of amateurism. The decision, based on antitrust law, came as the business model of college sports is under increasing pressure."

Define "relatively modest." It doesn't look like they did. Can of worms opened?

That's for the schools/NCAA/statehouses/Congress to decide. The Court is there to determine constitutionality, not establish the parameters.

Great. Lets hope the top rated QB, Wide Receiver and Offensive and Defensive Linemen in this years class are all offered $5 million dollars each to use their likenesses in advertising S.B. Ballard Construction, on the condition they sign with ODU of course.

"To be sure, the NCAA and its member colleges maintain important traditions that have become part of the fabric of America—game days in Tuscaloosa and South Bend; the packed gyms in Storrs and Durham; the women’s and men’s lacrosse championships on Memorial Day weekend; track and field meets in Eugene; the spring softball and baseball World Series in Oklahoma City and Omaha; the list goes on. But those traditions alone cannot justify the NCAA’s decision to build a massive money-raising enterprise on the backs of student athletes who are not fairly compensated. Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate. And under ordinary principles of antitrust law, it is not evident why college sports should be any different. The NCAA is not above the law."

I wonder if its a stretch to think this could extend to High School and AAU sports too?

If anyone thinks that this “decision” bodes well for schools like Old Dominion University then you need to rethink what this really means when put into practice. Outcome will be very similar to that whereby “student athletes” can escape their commitment via the use of the magic portal. It’s all about the Benjamin’s!

Agree with this...rich schools will pay the athletes more and more until we cannot afford to compete anymore. It will be like baseball with small market teams and larger market teams, but without the revenue sharing that occurs in baseball.

RE: OT - Supreme Court Rules Against the NCAA
I’m not sure what really changes from a talent perspective.

The P5s were already recruiting our best players to transfer up. They were already getting their pick of the litter in recruiting. They still miss on a ton of guys who end up transferring down. They’ll still have roster limits.

Exactly. Its that way now. This will make it worse, but its already that way. The question is, do the G5s give up and make their own division? The only way the P5 leave and start their own division is if it costs them money to stay in the NCAA, and they're already keeping 99% of it. Maybe if these court cases had gone a different way, they would have left the NCAA, but now they'll just keep buying the best players, only without salary caps, drafts, and revenue sharing that keeps some semblance of parity in the pros.

It looks like the ruling strictly held to benefits of an "educational" nature which going forward would be unlimited. So this means the end to the NCAA's ridiculous rules like you can provide bagel's but no cream cheese. Maybe at Alabama it means around the clock masseuse because of the rigors of being a student athlete. But in general anything that can be considered educational. Free lap tops, tutoring, etc. But does not yet open the door to cash payments (beyond COA) and the NCAA will likely cave on NIL before it gets adjudicated. All this is fine and keeps college athletics amateur which is vital for schools as it gets into the tax code to actually pay the players a negotiated wage. Kavanaugh's comments seemed to go further though than the ruling suggests and hints that future more aggressive suits wouldn't go the NCAA's way either.

So now that NIL is allowed, who will be the first ODU athlete to do an ad for The Edge?

Well if you are Alabama and you have a superstar QB like Mac Jones that you can argue makes you an extra $50M, a $5M payment (10%) bonus would be considered modest relative to what was made, no? Furthermore, why can't they start selling jerseys and kick back a relatively modest royalty. Can of worms indeed. The widening of the gap is going to be exponential if the Alabamas become the New York Yankees and the ODUs become the Peninsula Pilots. Who would come here when even if you are the best player, your market is so small you still have low value? Better off going to Alabama at the back of the depth chart and hoping to get a shot one day. Will be interesting to see where this leads, but I don't like it.

There's still only 125 spots on a team like Alabama and there's way more talented players than that in the nation right? The real fight is going to be between the P5s with all that money, not between us and them. The top 1000 players in the nation are still going to go to the P5 for the most part.

Maybe you are right and it doesn't change freshman recruiting much, but I don't see how we keep anyone good for more than a season. I don't see loyalty to the team being much of a thing anymore now that money is a determining factor. You can still make the NFL/NBA from ODU so if you like your team, coach, and university, and while exposure and TV time are tempting, you really don't need to transfer to further your career. But if you can make money, why not transfer now? That changes the dynamic in my opinion. What happens when Virginia Tech offers Sophomore Taylor Heinicke $200k? That's a fortune for a 19/20 year old knowing he is one play away from a career ending injury.

That's true. That'll be tough and they may have to put some kind of rules in place to not turn us into the Pilots. I don't know what would be fair though.
