Not sure how UH jumps from a 3-5 finish to #3 in the conference. Has the roster changed that much?

The only way you rank SMU this low is if you believe the QB play this year will be worse than last year. Otherwise, they return most of their starters and have a ton of quality depth added via the transfer portal. Between Mordechai and Stone, SMU will have a decent QB by the time conference play starts.

I'm not as familiar with what is happening with Tulsa and Memphis, but I can't imagine either dropping this much.

Its hard to imagine with the improvement that has come in the AAC that only 2 teams would make the top 50.

Athlon. Making college football fans chuckle for decades.

Memphis won 5 games by 3 or less points with arguably its best qb in history that is now gone. Got manhandled by Tulane. Beat UCF due to a missed fg. Beat USF by one point. Didnt belong on the field with Cincy.

Poor coaching and lost key talent. Honestly they may be too high

Derp derp…..those BLM stickers still have you triggered.

Our OL sucked as did our running game. There was no balance attack on offense. Our new D scheme finally started clicking halfway through the season. Not to mention, the offense was built around players that opted out.

Do you really think we finish 6-6 or worst?

He makes a good point valid for all schools. The margin between victory and defeat often relies upon a small number of key plays.

So you think Memphis will be in the bottom tier of teams this season?

They are listed as 7th best of 11 in the AAC and 20th best out of the 65 teams listed. I'd call the more middle than bottom.

Yes, if all imponderables turn against us. The same is true for all but the most dominant teams. Always cloudy the future is.

I think USF will be a much better team but due to our schedule I think 4-8 would be considered a good year.

RE: Athlon's Preseason Rankings
Major click bait here.
There is no friggin way Memphis is behind Boise State, UAB or UTSA in any multi-verse. Boise State is starting completely over with new a coaching staff, and UTSA... bleep bleep bleep bleep (if you cannot say something nice don't say nothin')
Yes we are breaking in a new QB, but we will have a quality O line with some depth, and the ability to run the ball as our QB gets used to the offense.
The RBs, as well as our WRs, already know the offense, so the learning curve will be on the QB.
Our defense should be pretty decent too. They didn't have a full season of practice last year to install the defense, so they learned it on the fly, and were getting better by the middle of the year.
If Memphis had had a better O line last season, we win 2 more games.
This season, I'm saying the worst we will do is 8 wins. And that is in a 'rebuilding' year.

yeah, he and Houston don't seem to be a good match.
I'm hoping Houston can right the ship, our conference needs for them to be good too.

UTSA is pretty good actually. They return the second leading rusher in the country, lost to BYU by 7 points last year (the only other team than Coastal to give them a game), and barely lost to a top 25 Louisiana in the bowl game. They are not bad and are expected to win CUSA west by a lot of people.

I agree. USF is going to take a significant leap forward this year. However, with NC State, Florida, and BYU in non conf, and a challenging AAC schedule, it will be tough to win more than 5 games. I predict 5-7.

we play them the day after my birthday in September...so we will see.
Covid hit a lot of teams hard last season, and teams that would ordinarily never see the top 25 were ranked last season.
Count me as a 'doubting Thomas'.
