2021 USA Olympic Trials - Track and Field
I figure that it is time to start a thread on the 4 Owls (5 events) at the USA Olympic Trials - Track and Field.

First, here is the complete competition SCHEDULE.

Here is the TV SCHEDULE.

Those of you who have Peacock can stream it all there.

RE: 2021 USA Olympic Trials - Track and Field
How do the qualifying sizes for the events compare this year to past Trials? It seems to me that they're much smaller (they tend to range from 24 to 32 competitors in the events this year). I really don't understand the need for 3 rounds in many events when the field is rather small to begin with. For instance, they will start with 30 athletes in the 1500 but will have 3 rounds. So does that mean they will go from 30 to 20 to 10 maybe in the various rounds?

It just seems a bit too much - and then they have those two rest days in the middle of the week. It just seems to be a schedule from past Trials that they perhaps didn't need this time around?

I don't really understand what goes into determining the numbers per event. But, these are set years before the trials, and obviously, they don't always work out. For one example, the committee set a qualifying standard for the women's 10,000 meters of 32:25.00, figuring that would result in a field of around 24. However, they could not anticipate the impact of the new Nike shoes, and as a result, there are 46 women who have declared for the field.

For those who might have missed it, Michelle Fokam will also be competing in the long jump at the Olympic Trials. She has no realistic chance to make it in that event, but does have a shot at the triple jump.

Friday - 1500 1st round - top 24 advance to semifinals (top 6 in each of 3 heats, plus next 6 fastest times). This will be a light workout for the top runners.

Saturday - semifinals - (top 5 in each of 2 heats, plus next 2 fastest advance to finals). This can get a little dicey, but likely not.

Monday - 12 runners for 3 spots.

Looks like 30 to 24 then in the 1500 in the 1st round (the heat sheets have 31 athletes listed but one is Shelby Houlihan and she was just confirmed to be out due to a positive test for a banned substitute which she claims she got from a pork burrito at a food truck). That sounds kind of silly to me (the amount of qualifiers - I do believe a food truck burrito can cause lots of issues), but I did just look it up and it was the same in 2016. Actually in 2016, it was only 27 athletes who ran in the 1st round of the women's 1500 (with 23 advancing to the semis - I guess one of the 24 didn't run in the semis).

I remember going to the 1984 US Olympic Trials in Los Angeles (I still have the program somewhere), and it seems to me that they had like 50 or 60 runners in the 1st round of prelims. But that was a long time ago and I might be remembering it wrong.

Did anyone read this and have a vision of a car commercial where the SUV pole vaults over 610 traffic?

RE: 2021 USA Olympic Trials - Track and Field
Friday, June 18

In addition to the qualifying for women's triple jump (Michelle Fokam), there are numerous preliminaries in various events.

Also, there are 2 finals to determine the first Americans on the Olympic team:

Men's Shot Put

Prelims and Finals today.

This is one of the best American events, in that our men, as a group, are the best in the world. Right now, Americans are ranked 1,2,3 in the world, led by Ryan Crouser, the defending Olympic champion, who has had a ridiculous 23.01 (75' 6") put this year. Indoors this year, he broke the 22 year old world record for the indoor shot put. Here are some of the top competitors:

(2021 World Ranking) Individual Best Mark of 2021 [Lifetime Best]

1. Ryan Crouser 23.01 (75' 6") [same] *
2. Joe Kovacs 22.72 (74' 6½") [22.91 75' 2"] *
3. Darrell Hill 22.34 (73' 3½") [22.44 73' 7½"] *
10. Josh Awotunde 21.68 (71' 1½") [same] *
11. Payton Otterdahl 21.53 (70' 7¾") [same] *
28. T'Mond Johnson 20.87 (68' 5¾") [same]
30. Matthew Katnik 20.76 (68' 1½") [same]
31. Tripp Piperi 20.71 (67' 11½") [21.11 69' 3¼"] *
NR. David Pless (no mark) [21.13 69' 4"] *

* Met Olympic Standard

Men's 10,000 Meters

For me, the interesting thing will be how many American-born runners will be on the team. At the last couple of international competitions, our teams for the 5K, 10K, steeplechase, and marathon have been dominated by naturalized citizens from East Africa.

Here are the top competitors for this year's team. Galen Rupp, our top marathon runner, is on the entry list, and must be seen as a favorite to make the team. I don't know if he is competing to prepare for the Olympic marathon, or whether he actually wants to double. He would still need to run 27:28.00 to hit the Olympic standard.

Here are some of the top competitors:

(2021 World Ranking) Individual Best Time of 2021 (Lifetime Best)

11. Grant Fisher 27:11.29 (same) *
12. William Kincaid 27:12.78 (same) *
13. Ben True 27:14.95 (same) *
18. Emmanuel Bor 27:22.80 (same) *
20. Joe Klecker 27:23.44 (same) *
35. Conner Mantz 27:41.16 (same)
38. Samuel Chelanga 27:42.02 (27:08.39)
39. Abdihamid Nur 27:42.73 (same)
42. Frank Lara 27:43.13 (same)
43. Robert Brandt 27:43.17 (27:39.20)
45. Eric Hamer 27:44.87 (same)
58. James Mwaura 27:50.44 (same)
62. Isai Rodriguez 27:52.92 (same)
66. Dillon Maggard 27:54.89 (same)
**********************************************
86. Galen Rupp 28:00.37 (26:44.36)
NR Lopez Lomong NONE (27:04.72) *
NR. Eric Jenkins NONE (27:22.06) *

Wow - 36 runners in 1984! The standards have tightened, but the Nike spikes have allowed for more qualifiers than expected for this year.

Just to clarify - this year, it's 3 heats of 10, with top 6 in each heat, plus next 6 fastest times (24 in all) advancing to semis.

RE: 2021 USA Olympic Trials - Track and Field
The United States has 7 men who have met the Olympic standard in the shot put and 7 others in the 10,000 meters.

The women's 100 meters (first round today) has 23 out of 32 who have met the standard. That depth is crazy.

Not really. There were still two guys added to make the field 30. The biggest impact came from extending the qualifying period all the way back to Jan. 1, 2019 and including marks from 2020 when World Athletics shut things down.
