The best opportunities for true freshmen to get time are at DT & CB.
DT is a solid group with O'Malley, Ester, Griffin and Taylor but beyond those four guys there one 2nd year freshman in Hugunin, then four true freshmen. So any injuries at all and somebody we haven't seen yet is going to be in the rotation. My best would be Haberman. Jordan or Ontengco might have more upside, but Haberman is the most college ready.
At CB there is Gandy, Thomas, and March returning in terms of much experience but none of them are "playmakers." They had a hard time just covering anyone last year, let alone show any hope of creating turnovers. Rogers is very highly regarded by the coaches but missed all his freshman year with an injury. McGee has had a really nice off-season. Neither of those guys have gotten enough playing time to really know if they can be difference makers or not. If they aren't and any one of McGarrell, Byrd or Kalomo flashes in practice they could end up getting a shot come game time.
Brown should get some run in the backfield at some point, but that isn't "off the radar."

Would you count Jevyon Ducker in this?
Technically, he was a true freshman last year but suffered a preseason injury that had him spending the entire season on the bench, so he never got his “first year opportunity” as you put it.

Nate Valcarcel has to be in the mix at safety early. I like Hanson and Lafayette - after them I like Earl. I don’t feel great about brown. I think with Dolphin moving to LB if they keep Valcarcel at safety he might be the #3 guy this season.

Personally, I don't see Valcarcel being on the field as a safety unless he made significant improvement in downfield coverage ability at SD. Out of HS he was a downhill run and hit safety. Jashon Prophete is a much quicker athlete, was better in coverage, and was just as good coming up and making tackles. Plus, he has a year in the system. Also, just reading between the lines with how Thomas was used in the spring, I think that if Hansen of Lafayette was to get injured then Thomas is really the #3 safety. Then Earl & Brown, then Prophete. I could see Valcarcel being a valuable contributor on kick and punt coverage this season, but not more than that at this point.

I was mostly speaking about the incoming Freshman class. Excited to see if any of those guys will stand out. There’s always at least 1 that gets the opportunity to contribute.
