I think Madsen can sell him on staying another year. Madsen's an NBA guy all the way and will steer him well, but as young as Aimaq is, his stock will only rise with another solid year behind him.

I don't think his stock will rise much more than it currently is though. His team more than likely won't be battling for the top of the WAC, he won't more than likely lead the nation again in rebounding. It's also tough to win multiple league MVP awards. I'm not sure he has more to prove at UVU or the WAC. If he stays great but if he goes pro it makes sense too.

I agree with this. It will be virtually impossible to improve or even match his season from last year. Leading the country in rebounding, in historic fashion (first player in about 40 years to average over 15 boards a game), POY in a condensed season, back to back games, transitioning D1 teams in their first year, 4 new schools coming on board this year. Plus he was an unknown quantity. Teams will have him on their radar and look at games like the ones against NMSU to figure out how to defend him.

I've seen guys come back and it dropped their stock significantly. Siakam was smart to leave when he did even though he was very raw.

RE: 2021/2022 Preseason MBALL WAC POY
It will be interesting to see what the drop in Aimaq's weight will do for his game. Aimaq has also apparently expanded his shooting range. Aimaq has leaned out but sometimes it works against a player who uses he thickness/mass to carve out space in the paint. Additionally, as previously stated, Aimaq has lost the element of surprise with WAC coaches and players. There is now a lot of game footage and time for teams to devise a way to defend against him. Racking up 15 rebounds per game will be much tougher to do if he returns for another year of college. Will another college season raise his stock further? If he is truly a special player in the making, then maybe so. But if he has ceiling to his game that can be exploited by WAC coaches, then maybe its best he gets paid now while the getting is good.

It might be an additional opportunity season to show how much MORE he can do than rebound. Yes, he can score and rebound. But after another year, maybe he'll really be able to run the floor better instead of lumbering around like Sim Bhullar at times. Usually just the end of a game, but still...

He may not improve in established areas but could really expand his game. Being guided by Madsen, thats such an opportunity for him IMO.

One Aggie player I expect to have a breakout year it Donnie Tillman; now that he has had one year in Jans' system. Tillman has a lot of versatility to his game but lacked consistency last season. If he can become a more efficient scorer in the paint, he will be a hard players to stop this season.

Man, this seems like such a long time ago in his career!

He's ready for a big breakout year. Last season was ok, but he was just getting going I feel.

If Allen is as good as he can be Tillman will be fighting Rice, McCants and possibly 1 more Aggie for touches. I'm not sure it will show in the box score as much as some might think but I agree he does have an opportunity take a step forward that will help in the W/L column.

Lastly on Aimaq his lumbering probably won't stop but he should be stronger down low. but his time vs GCU and NMSU I think the key is to keep him away from the FT line and you are ok with him getting his rebounds just have to keep the other 4 guys in check. Woodbury needs to take a step forward for Aimaq to improve his game I think.

He was actually starting to play really good toward the end of last season. I'm really excited about this squad this season. We should be solid all the way around. Hopefully McCants can stay healthy. It's going to be tough stopping Allen and Rice.

The key for NMSU is to do exactly what they did last season. Aimaq scored 8 total points against us in three games. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Teams did put Aimaq on the line a LOT. There were games he hit double digits in free throws made.

UVU went 2-2 when he shot 10 or more FT's. He's a 61% FT shooter not very good.

BYU WYO STJ NMSUx3 GCUx2 stats below
Aimaq averaged 8 ppg 13rpg FT's 21-35 for 60% (WYO game he went 11-16) W/L 2-7 (against the best comp they saw last year). Aimaq feasted on a lot of poor post play in the WAC for the most part and I wonder how much Cole helped Aimaq last year?

NMSU's defense actually did a good job stunting the overall production of the big centers in the WAC. However, NMSU's defense struggled slowing down opposing PGs.

Assuming the stats you provided are correct, that shows that even the best teams be faced couldn't keep him off the boards. 2.X rebounds below his average is nothing. And they put him on the line a lot. I'm unclear what your stats are intended to show, other than he needs to score more. I'm sure his coaches already agree. If its intended to show that UVU needs to improve in areas outside of Aimaq, I agree.

Score more but it shows that 7 out of 9 of these games he still did well and they lost. Also I'm wondering if he will have a guys that can play the game like Cole and Overton to help spread the defense of the other team b/c next season all the focus will be on Aimaq until UVU can prove they have 2 other quality options..

It's probably why we cleaned house with last year's point guards.

Nate Pryor who struggled in a 2-3 at UW isn't the answer imo for NMSU but I'm ok with that...

Jans recruited Pryor many years before he committed elsewhere. So he has been on our radar for some time. 6'4" PG? Me gusta.

I spoke with Jans about Pryor and he said the program at UW was a mess and you could see it on the floor. Said Pryor's play there was not indicative of the player he is. In Jans I trust.

I've gone back in the off season and rewatched some of his highest performing games. He out works everyone on every play. He's much more than just physical. Even better, he's a smart player.

Agreed

And he’s coming back and I for one am glad. Aimaq makes the conference better.

I've gone back in the off season and rewatched some of his highest performing games. He out works everyone on every play. He's much more than just physical. Even better, he's a smart player.

Agreed

And he’s coming back and I for one am glad. Aimaq makes the conference better.

^ This

I'm glad he's coming back, let's get some OOC wins!

GO AGGIES!!!
