I expect AAC to sit at 11 as long as possible; there isn’t a reason for them to rush.

There actually is a bit of urgency. Their exemption from the NCAA allowing them to host a conference championship game without playing in divisions expires after this season or next. The word out there is the NCAA is not likely to extend that waiver.

Let’s make it to an access bowl and have a lengthy run in the Ncaa tournament to make sure we have plenty of money for an exit fee.
It’s probably not a city/market that the AAC is looking for. BYU is probably at the top of the list now. AAC wanted Boise state’s football program, but I don’t believe the current members feel as if they offer anything respectable outside of football. Same could be said for San Diego state and their basketball program. I could see BYU remaining independent if invited, hoping the PAC 12 expands.
Georgia State offers nothing currently besides being a tv market. They are what we once were.
Now we have the market, facilities and sustainability in the top sport, with the likely resurgence of what ‘was’ our top sport.

Most time when you leave a conference you leave all uncollected money behind.

I remember Memphis hoops having a run prior to their exit and I thought that pretty much covered their exit fee.
I think Marshall’s beat writer estimated 5-6 years ago, that the exit fee would’ve been around $6 mil. Surely, that would be cut in half by now?

They'll try to kick that can down the road one more time. Given COVID and the impending playoff restructuring, I think they could be granted that. There will be some other conferences who want to potentially explore restructuring how championship game matchups are set given that there will be autobids attached to them.

As leagues prepare to discuss the 12-team playoff, the fate of divisions will be in the crosshairs. With more at-large bids at stake, leagues may find more urgency to put their two best teams in the league title game. Expect leagues to make a deep dive on the potential impact.
