They could have chatted about their mutual affection for abortion.

RE: Pope-Biden Meeting Nixed
Biden has been overtly pro-abortion since the 1990s, and in more subtle fashion for longer than that. I don’t believe that Pope Francis just suddenly “found out” about it yesterday and cancelled a scheduled public event because of it. Both because I think Francis probably shares Biden’s view to some extent, and also because he would not try to embarrass someone that way.

I think the truth is much more simple: Biden is physically/mentally exhausted, and his handlers knew he couldn’t get it together in time to be seen in public. So they bailed.

The Vatican canceled the mass.

Quote:A scheduled morning Mass involving President Joe Biden and Pope Francis has reportedly been nixed from the June 15 itinerary meeting between the two leaders.

Sources within the Vatican say the morning Mass was canceled because of the potential scandal that could arise if Pope Francis were to give Holy Communion to the stalwartly pro-abortion president, according to Catholic News Agency (CNA).

“President Biden, who is in Europe for several high level meetings, is taking off the morning of June 15 to meet Pope Francis as President of the United States for the first time,” reported CNA. “The President’s entourage had originally requested for Biden to attend Mass with the Pope early in the morning, but the proposal was nixed by the Vatican after considering the impact that President Biden receiving Holy Communion from the Pope would have on the discussions the USCCB is planning to have during their meeting starting Wednesday, June 16. The US Bishops are slated to vote on creating a committee that would draft a document about Eucharistic Coherence.”

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, abortion is a grave moral evil that cannot be approved or tolerated in any circumstance. In 2019, a Catholic priest in South Carolina reportedly enforced the church’s code of canon law by denying the then-former vice president the sacrament of Holy Communion because of his stance on abortion.

“Sadly, this past Sunday, I had to refuse Holy Communion to former Vice President Joe Biden,” Father Robert E. Morey of Saint Anthony Catholic Church told reporters. “Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other, and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”

Speaking with Catholic World Report in February, Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, who also serves as chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, said that Biden “should stop defining himself as a devout Catholic” while acknowledging that his abortion views stand in direct opposition to the Catholic Church.

“Mr. Biden professes to be a devout Catholic, yet is 100% pro-choice on abortion. How do you think America’s bishops ought to respond to this situation?” CWR asked.

“I can tell you how this bishop is responding. The president should stop defining himself as a devout Catholic, and acknowledge that his view on abortion is contrary to Catholic moral teaching. It would be a more honest approach from him to say he disagreed with his Church on this important issue and that he was acting contrary to Church teaching,” Naumann responded. “When he says he is a devout Catholic, we bishops have the responsibility to correct him. Although people have given this president power and authority, he cannot define what it is to be a Catholic and what Catholic moral teaching is.”

“What he is doing now is usurping the role of the bishops and confusing people,” Naumann added. “He’s declaring that he’s Catholic, and is going to force people to support abortion through their tax dollars. The bishops need to correct him, as the president is acting contrary to the Catholic faith.”

With all due respect to the Catholic News Agency, I’m just not willing to accept their reports as a definitive account of the Vatican’s political motives and agendas.

I was raised Catholic. My 97 year old grandmother still goes to mass every morning. My Uncle, who is also my Godfather, is a priest. Until last year, I don't remember ever hearing the phrase.. devout Catholic.

Yes, I know the word and what it means. I just meant that we never used it to describe fellow Catholics. you were either Catholic or not. we would call people Lapsed Catholic, or Cafeteria Catholic. I guess it was just our Parish.

Same here. While I applaud the Vatican's decision, the fact that it was even considered shows me that Pope Francis canceled due to optics, not because it was the right thing to do.

RE: Pope-Biden Meeting Nixed

Quote:After hours of debate and weeks of concern, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) voted, overwhelmingly, on Friday to draft a “teaching document” addressing the issue of Communion for openly pro-abortion politicians, like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and President Joe Biden.

The American Catholic hierarchy has yet to address the contents of the document, but according to the National Catholic Reporter, the document is “slated to include a section on ‘Eucharistic consistency’ and Catholic politicians.”

“The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops this week voted to move forward on several action items, including a draft of a teaching document on the Eucharist,” Catholic News Agency reported Friday, adding that the document is to be considered “a formal statement on the meaning of the Eucharist in the life of the Church.”

“The measure passed by a vote of 168 to 55, with six abstentions,” CNA noted. “A simple majority was required for passage of the action item. The U.S. bishops’ doctrine committee will now lead the process of drafting the document, with input from other conference committees. A draft of the document could be ready to be debated, amended, and voted on by the bishops at their November meeting – which is currently planned to be held in person in Baltimore, Maryland.”

“Only 55 bishops voted against the motion, fewer than signed a letter to the conference president Archbishop Gomez, last month, calling for the vote to be dropped from the agenda altogether,” The Pillar added.

As the Daily Wire reported back in April, members of the USCCB had suggested that the group draft such a teaching document in order to provide guidance to bishops and priests on how to best counsel — and, in some cases, handle — publicly pro-choice politicians like Biden and Pelosi who may want to receive the Eucharist, despite being in open defiance of Church teaching on the subject of abortion.

“Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, who is chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, has publicly and repeatedly rebuked Biden for supporting abortion, going so far as to say the president ‘should stop defining himself as a devout Catholic,” the Daily Wire noted.

“Because President Biden is Catholic, it presents a unique problem for us,” Naumann told the AP. “It can create confusion. … How can he say he’s a devout Catholic and he’s doing these things that are contrary to the church’s teaching?”

The Catholic Church, of course, believes abortion is a grave evil, and support for abortion is a serious sin — an “open defiance” of Church teaching. Anyone in such a state of sin cannot receive Communion in the Catholic church.

The topic, though, as The Pillar noted, “hugely contentious” and complex, particularly given that denying Communion is a serious issue, and it is not particularly clear what “objective conditions” render “a person unfit for admission to the Eucharist.” There is also “an evident discomfort among some bishops about directive use of episcopal authority and practical disagreement about how to engage with a Catholic president who advocates for policy contrary to Catholic teaching.”

These issues will likely be ironed out in the drafting process, over the next 150 days.

"Thats a private matter"

Well, it would be a private matter had you not publicly proclaimed that you are a devout catholic who supports killing babies when you were running for office.
