WVU To Join CUSA Soccer in 2022
On Monday,, Conference USA announced the addition of West Virginia University as an affiliate member for the sport of men’s soccer. The Mountaineers will begin play in C-USA for the fall 2022 season.

WVU in the same conference with Marshall? Quick, somebody check to see if the Ohio River has froze over.

RE: WVU To Join CUSA Soccer in 2022
I believe this is the school (no names were mentioned) MU Coach Grassie alluded to in his interview with Paul Swann the day after the championship match that would be joining CUSA. I think I brought it up in CLTs soccer thread.

I think this another great addition to the conference along with Coastal Carolina. WVU’s Coach Stratford won two NCAA titles at University of Charleston right after Coach Grassie took the Marshall job.

I can see the potential of 4 to 5 CUSA schools making the NCAA tournament in the traditional field of 48 on an annual basis.

Currently, 24 spots are reserved for the winners of automatic bids. Picking up 4 of the 24 remaining spots would be great.

Not sold on Stratford or WVU soccer. What he done at UC was the hard work, sweat and build of Coach Grassie and asst. Petsa Ivanovic. You could have put Ron Jirsa or even Dwight Freeman in as UC HC and won a national title.

WVU has made the NCAA Soccer Tournament 14 times since 1961 and they have yet to make it out of the 2nd round. Color me not impressed with this add.

He beat our 2 best last year, for a reality check. The guy wants to win and he isn't going to roll over. We are easily as strong as any other league in the country with them added. That gives us 5 teams that have made or won the tournament in recent years and FIU on the cusp and UAB who has history. Grassie wouldn't go to bat for them unless he thought it was a quality add that would help us in the long run.

They beat us on a bounce that went over Semmle's head that was kicked from about 40 yards out. It wasn't even a shot. In the 8 years they have been in the MAC, 5 of those years was spent in 4-6 place at the end of the year.

They have never been in a strong soccer conference, not even when in the A10 or BE. Plus their WalMart fans didn't even know what conference they played in. More than one said they couldn't believe they were leaving the B12 in soccer.

Was the WVU move in the works well before GSU/GaSo joined? Or is this a reaction to that?

I don't think the Georgia schools made it to CUSA, only Coastal Carolina.

Edit, oh I think you mean join the mac. You know it would be cool if we could also add Akron to CUSA. Let's just go ahead and make this a super conference...

It doesn't matter how they won. They put themselves in a position to get a lucky bounce and did. Whatever. We didn't beat Clemson. We moved forward on penalty kicks. Still counts as a win. Underestimate them at your own peril is all I'm saying. I didn't mention the MAC. And this is a different coach than 4-6 place in the MAC. Look what a different coach did for us. Like I said Grassie would not have backed WVU in if they weren't going to lift the conference. You can't proclaim him all world coach and then put down his opinion on soccer. I'll trust they made the right call. There is certainly no one else worth adding at this time. And none of us knew much about our soccer team till last year, either. Even more know about it this year. If they get a push into the NCAA Tournament they'll brush up on where and who they play just like our fans did.

It's a good addition to CUSA and makes us a better conference in soccer and since it's mostly an east division soccer conference for msoc they fit in geographically as well. And it frees us up to use our name to get a high quality OOC opponent to replace them on our schedule. There's really no downside as long as we beat the **** out of them every single time we play. Once they're playing the tougher games every week we should truck them. They won't be able to just get up for games against us or Charlotte.

The other thing, this will be a game that both of our fan bases can get up for each year. If WVU starts to win, they will support their fans will support the program.
