RE: Luke McCaffery to Transfer to Rice from Nebraska
So of course I have no idea if this guy is 'the answer' or not, but on paper, this is a HUGE get and exactly the sort of situation where transfers can work for us.
He and family clearly value education...
All Academic teams etc...
GREAT pedigree including QB on a state championship team... father and brother...
For some reason/somehow, not getting what he wants/needs at other places...
We would have been all over ourselves to get a guy/name/pedigree like him out of high school, so I'm going to share that same excitement!!

The 6-foot-2 signal caller played in 11 games for the Cornhuskers, throwing for 608 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for 530 yards and three scores.
"I'm excited about him joining our program and competing at the quarterback position." Satterfield said.
As a redshirt freshman last year, McCaffrey appeared in seven games for the Cornhuskers, making two starts. He completed 48 of 76 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown, while rushing 65 times for 364 yards and three touchdowns.
(06-09-2021 12:00 PM)Sports Illustrated Wrote:McCaffrey was on campus for roughly a week, and according to Satterfield, participated in “3-4” summer workouts, and decided to leave the program because he wanted to come in and be the starting quarterback.
Sounds like his original transfer recruiting process included either poorly communicated expectations or somebody lied about what they expected to happen. I'd expect some of the QBs on the depth chart to start shopping around since, correct me if I'm wrong, McCaffrey has four years of eligibility. He played 4 games as a true freshman, which is still redshirt eligible, and I don't believe anybody spent a year last year.

His tape is pretty impressive. Very athletic, as you would expect, with a very quick release. His arm action is slightly unorthodox, but it seems to serve him well Welcome to Rice. Hopefully he finds his niche here a lot faster the McGuffie did (which was on the coaching staff, not McGuffie).

Christian played at Stanford under Bloomgren so there is that connection.
Interestingly, his dad Ed is now the head coach at Northern Colorado and son #3 (Dylan) is going to be their QB in 2021 after transferring from Michigan. The oldest son (Max) is an assistant coach for his dad at UNC. And they will be in Houston on September 11 because they play at Houston Baptist that day.

In any event, I wish him well at Rice!
I THINK (but do not know) that this is mostly a COVID benefit... in that this year essentially doesn't count... so he won't be able to transfer again unless/until he graduates (which could be soon) but he likely needs at least 60 hours at Rice...
and if he has success, I'd like to think it will attract other guys.

If he has success, maybe it buys Bloom another year.

Now, to define “success”...
Ham - I hope you are correct, and he is at Rice for at least a couple of years.
OO - I had the same thought that this may be what saves Bloom’s job, assuming Luke is successful at Rice. Let’s hope the new OC is allowed to use his talent and not just toss the ball to a back 5 yards behind him.

Got really confused with that UNC reference right there. Thought his dad was pulling double duty for a second - then I realized Northern Colorado must be a university...

McCaffrey will be eligible immediately at Rice and will have four years to play four. He never triggered transfer status at Louisville because he didn't take a class or receive aid.

As to the definition of success - Just win baby!
I think Bloom’s job at this point gets saved one year at a time. Each year needs to show improvement in the W-L.
