I'll trust the 4* who has already started and played against Big10 competition. Green is a drop back QB; McCaffery is a rollout QB, which should provide a bit more time to throw.

Started and played? Yes. Played well? No. He threw 6 INTs to 1 TD in 2020…

McCaffery had a 103.22 QB rating in 2020 against B10 competition.

Green had a 22.68 QB rating in 2020 against CUSA competition.

I'm not arguing for Green. I'm just saying McCaffrey is going to have to play a whole lot better, with his arm specifically, than what he's shown so far. I don't view as the sure thing some on here do. Hopefully our coaches can get the best out of him.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that Green's actual on field, in competition performance the past 3 years has been even worse, and against far weaker competition than McCaffery faced.

I’m not ignoring anything. I never even mentioned Green. You and Tomball did.

I’ll be surprised if he starts all 12 games at QB. Not because of injury, but I’m just not convinced he’s that much better than the rest of the QBs on the team. 3 passing TDs, 4 rushing TDs and 6 picks in 11 games at Nebraska. Not many passes above 20 yards.

I sure hope it works out. We been suffering the last 6 or 7 years of really bad football. Thank God women sports has brought some gratitude.

Agree. That talent needs to be used.

+1. Johnson must be on the field, preferably as a WR.

Again, his QBR rating is over 100, playing as a Freshman against Big10 defenses. And you're comparing him to "the rest of the QBs on the team"? Seriously?

Well you have to remember he also had a B10 offensive line. His QBR can say whatever it likes but those INT numbers and his record aren’t standout. I still think he’ll win the spot. Bloom clearly wasn’t happy with our QB room. Rumor was one of the other transfers was in line to start this season anyway. Jovoni is supposedly too slow reading defenses and can’t make use of his arm talent. If that’s the case we need to convert him to a WR/TE threat because he was one of our better offensive threats with the ball in his hand. Thinking a Kodi Burns at Auburn situation under Malzahn offense.

RE: Luke McCaffery to Transfer to Rice from Nebraska
McCaffery's QB rating in 2019 (very limited appearances) was around 220. He was able to beat out Adrian Martinez (a three year starter) briefly last year, but Martinez retained his starters' role by the end of the season. Both were the top two runners for Nebraska (whose offensive line was probably not up to past Nebraska standards).

My suspicion is that McCaffery is closer to a Bert Emanuel-type talent than a Nick Fanuzzi (Alabama transfer). Although I didn't think Fanuzzi was awful - it was just that you knew he wasn't going to be a major impact performer for Rice.

We’ve had multiple QBs with ratings in the 100s the last few seasons.

For once, we agree on something. I suspect the same. I also suspect that Bert Emanuel would not have been nearly as successful in a "pound the rock" offense, as a drop-back quarterback throwing on third-and-long. I do hope we start adjusting the scheme to our talent.

Honestly, of the two players, I think that McCaffery is a far better candidate to move to WR. He is much faster and has the ability to line up in the back field, slot, or out wide, as well as QB in certain plays (saw this on some Nebraska game tape). McCaffery offers much more versatility.

I thought it was since 1961.

There have been a few moderately successful interludes since then, but pretty much since you and/or I got to campus, Rice football has pretty much been dreadful.

We have way more options now than we did a week ago.

Johnson has shown running ability, but can he catch? Can he separate? Maybe RB should be thrown into the mix.

That's a shame because the arm talent is there. Either way, hoping that the staff selects as QB the young man that gives Rice the best chance to win and that all of talents are utilized effectively. If McCaffery is more Bert Emmanuel than Sam McGuffie (who was also under utilized until he was finally moved to receiver), then that is a very good development. Rice almost (should have) beat Texas at home with Bert.

I think Johnson is a gamer and I'm happy he is an Owl- he was great against Marshall last year- but I'm sorry, what arm talent are you talking about? He is farily accurate from 5-15 yards but really average on anything downfield.

Also- to someone else's comment above about Fanuzzi. It took him a while to settle into the offense, but he is probably the best we've had since McHargue. He was pretty good his last year.

Let's hope McCaffery is 1/2 as good as Bert Emanuel and the coaches figure out how to use his talent (which seems more running than passing). If he can make the throws that are open because the defense is focused on stopping him running then that is enough to be dangerous. Emanuel was never a great passer but IIRC he led the SWC in completion percentage one year- because he always seemed to be throwing to open receivers. It also helped that he was handing off to Trevor Cobb much of the time.

Not to nitpick-but Fanuzzi played prior to McHargue.

Our best QB since McHargue is definitely the one who followed him-Driphus Jackson.

Our best QB since McHargue is definitely the one who followed him-Driphus Jackson.

He did? I thought McHargue was right after Clement? Okay- to revise/ simplify my statement- Fanuzzi was pretty good, particularly his last year. You are right that our last quarterback that (fairly consistently) performed well was Jackson. The years start to blend together...

BTW- Chase Clement is going into the Rice Hall of Fame this year

RE: Luke McCaffery to Transfer to Rice from Nebraska
We haven't had success with QB's who can't run. Bert, Chad, Chase, McHargue, Jackson. So I look at running talent almost as the priority, for a QB to win at Rice. I've been rooting for Johnson, Bloomgren has said he has the arm and we know he can run, but when he fell behind Green and others in the QB race it left a huge question mark. A 4-star QB prospect, a McCaffrey, is a promising development to say the least. Whatever we ran in the Spring, we have to open it up even more to take advantage of McCaffrey's skillset and throwing outside the pocket. This would also benefit Johnson and move us away from pro-style passing schemes to ones where even a Tim Tebow level passer could thrive.
