I think Tuia was already implementing the change with Greene at the reigns, but he now has the added talent at QB to really make it happen. Bloomgren brought this OC in to save his job, and that's exactly what he'll do.

First, let me get my positives out of the way: with Jose Cruz Jr as baseball coach and McCaffery coming to Rice, its a great day to be an Owl.

Now for my Debbie Downer. Is Luke really a QB? He is fast, very fast. But will our offense consist of QB draws 40% of the time? I know that he passed for an impressive completion %, but unless his high school tape shows otherwise, I am not seeing someone who can win a lot of games with his arm...yet. His release point led to at least three interceptions off of tips/caroms at the line of scrimmage in some of the B10 games I saw. I would love to be wrong though. Either way, I like this pick up and am excited to see him on the field.

If 40 percent draws works, then it's fine with me

so, McCaffery up the middle, now? Guess it's worth a shot.

Which means he can't be a pocket passer.

Which means he is probably more effective in an option or run-and-shoot type of offense than a power running game. Maybe something like what Dinger did with Bert Emanuel.

Which is fine with me if we use him that way.

I don't care how we use him, I just care about results. If the results are bad, we used him wrong.

What impresses me most about him is the throws on the run and against the grain. This should fit very well with a 'run first' offense, like the way Yoeman used to beat us to death with the QB roll-out and drag routes (with the deep post or corner behind) from the veer. Athletes in space WHO CAN MAKE PLAYS.... as opposed to athletes in space who can not.

This kid can make plays. Emmanuel could make plays. Armstrong could make plays. Use him right and this is a game changer.

From the spring game, this is what I think I was seeing.... BUT... Wiley was 'solid' at this and I think McCaffrey is even much better... and Jovani could create, but struggled to make the accurate throws. Mostly, I think previous coaches failed to improve those skills, especially in Jovani.

I think you're right. From what I've read, Green is much improved. Who's to say he won't beat out McCaffrey?

So here is my hope... Let's assume McCaffery is 'the model' for a QB that can succeed in this offense. Wiley and Jovani now have a clear picture of what they are expected to do and can work on those aspects of their game... we now have 2-4 guys who know what they are expected to do well, and can model themselves after.. and as you note, at least push if not exceed the model. We can then be even more aggressive with them because we have back-ups in the same vein as opposed to having to redesign an offense if he goes down (last yr against Marshall)

Not only does it benefit us now and for the near future, but it allows other players we are recruiting to be able to SEE what we're after as opposed to just having to listen to a description of it. If he (or any of the other guys) master the offense, we can show highlight films. If they are running the plays but can't make the throws, we can at least say... here is the play but we missed the open man. Either way, we have an identity to recruit to.

I think the problem is that we've had an identity that we couldn't recruit to, because we can't get the people that can make it work.

Stanford made it work, at least as along as they had Luck & Co. They are also a P5. We're not. And since Luck & Co. left, Stanford has been on a downward trend.

We need to figure out how to win with the HS QB that is a winner, but that TexasU and aTm and LSU say, "Come here, and we will make you a safety." But he doesn't want to play safety. Or, another slant, the HS QB who also wants to pitch on the baseball team in the spring, but TexasU and aTm and LSU say, "Pick one sport and focus on it." Worst case, he can't make it at QB and we end up with a safety who could start for TexasU, aTm, or LSU. That would have been a very nice thing to have had in the last few years.

Green has to prove he's no longer a turnover machine. That's been his biggest problem throughout his Rice career.

Well, that's always the crux, right??

You have to win with what you have or can get. So either you convince that guy to come and blaze the trail or you adapt what you want to do to what you have or get in an effort to demonstrate enough of it to get him to come. I don't know which of those things happened here, but I didn't personally see the identity... so I am inclined to believe they convinced this guy to come without being able to demonstrate it (very well).

I think we need somehow to get Jovoni onto the field, get him to handle the ball in space and make people miss. Similar to a McGuffie situation that we never seemed to grab hold of. I’m excited about the quarterback situation now, but still feel like Jovoni needs to be on the field somewhere. He’ll make some plays.

That's true, but he also has never had anyone of Tuis pedegree coaching him up. I think Green is going to be great, and he'll give McCaffrey stiff competition. Green is the drop back passer.

All of this is a moot conversation if our offensive line hasn't taken massive strides from last season. 4* or 1* won't matter if he has to get the ball out in two seconds on every play.

I'll trust the 4* who has already started and played against Big10 competition. Green is a drop back QB; McCaffery is a rollout QB, which should provide a bit more time to throw.

Started and played? Yes. Played well? No. He threw 6 INTs to 1 TD in 2020…

McCaffery had a 103.22 QB rating in 2020 against B10 competition.

Green had a 22.68 QB rating in 2020 against CUSA competition.

As I mentioned earlier in this thread, McCaffery’s ypa rushing in 2020 was far better than the Owls pound the rock rushing offense.

Let’s give him a chance in camp to earn the job and show what he can do this fall before we start criticize him.

Agree. That talent needs to be used.
