RE: Worst loss in history for every Texas FBS team
The subject of 'the most gut wrenching Rice loss' I believe would have as many viable candidates as a 'World's Most Favorite Chocolate Shake' competition might have.

Speaking of which, *lawdy* I have just finished the daily judging of the latter!

One that I am surprised has not been mentioned is Rice 27, Iowa State 28, from 1991, IIRC.

What about the last SWC football game, an 18-17 loss to UH where the Owls allowed 15 4Q points and missed a 38 yd FG attempt with 12 seconds to play?

The worst was the 1993 basketball loss against Texas A&M, in the regular season finale at home. A win would have given us the Regular Season SWC title, and pretty much guaranteed us a spot in that year's NCAA Tournament. It took me months to get over that loss - which was in front of a packed house at Autry Court on Senior Night.
The first round conference tournament defeat to Texas that season also ranks pretty high in the crushing loss list.

I was doing media work for that tournament, after doing stats for Rice home games as usual in those days. When the team came out for warmups, they had the same looks in their eyes as they had for the aTm game a few days before. I was chatting with Phil Wood before the game and noted that I didn't like the look. He responded with, "That's not good." Unfortunately, we turned out to be right.

To make it worse, SMU (#1 seed) was knocked out in the first round by TCU, so the tournament was wide open for the taking. We would have been clear favorites all the way through if we hadn't choked.

That tournament was also noteworthy because Dave South, aTm radio announcer, got ejected by an official after making a "choke" gesture to him.

I also attended that tournament, along with a good buddy of mine that made the trip with me from Houston. I too thought the team looked and played like they were still hungover from the A&M loss. Texas was the number 7 seed, but in reality they were a very dangerous 7 seed. B.J. Tyler, their best player, was allowed to return to the team and play in the tournament, despite being suspended for most of the season. Him playing made Texas a much more difficult opponent - we had to be at our best to beat them, and we weren't. What really hurt was the fact that Tyler failed the post-game drug test and was suspended for the rest of the tournament.

Despite seeing our team get eliminated in the opening round, we had tickets for the entire tournament, and stayed to watch the remaining games on the following nights. The Rice section was adjacent to the UH section, so I had to put up with watching their cheering fans during the semifinal and final games. One guy was especially obnoxious. He was far and away their loudest and most intense fan. My guess is he was in his mid-20's at the time. He was constantly standing up, screaming and yelling, and trying to get all the other UH fans up and cheering. A few years later I was surprised to see that same, obnoxious fan - but now he had somehow gotten a job with the Rice Athletic Department. His name was Mike Pede. I always felt that Mike was a very loyal Owl fan when he worked for us, but deep down I always knew he bled Cougar Red. I'm not surprised that he eventually ended up being a major player in UH Athletics.

Worst loss in history for every Texas FBS team
All of the above…

Plus a close loss at Air Force that kept us out of the WAC championship. Almost a great comeback.

Plus WBB up 9 against Marquette in the NCAA first round, just over a minute left on the clock. (2019)

Plus 35-34 season opener to UH in 2006. Fun fact nobody knew at the time (and most don’t know today) is that loss effectively kept us out of the CUSA title game.

I got more… a lot of them have been suppressed so give me some more time…

Owls’ biggest blowout loss - 81-0 vs Austin College in 1912.

My son, an Austin College grad, was shocked to hear this. And then delighted.

1977 had its share of beat downs from traditional rivals:
LSU 77-0
UT 72-15

I think it was the start of considering Rice as being non competitive. Homer Rice really did nt bother with defense so we had blowups.

In terms of "defeat from the jaws of victory" that is the worst one I've seen in person.

In terms of "still haunts me to this day" it's UT in Austin and Peter Gardere's phantom touchdown.

Was it after that game that Adam Peakes as a senior went bonkers on the refs after the game along the lines of what can they do to me know?

Then of course, there was the 10 point play in the clown game at Autry Court in 78-OMG....

No, that was two years later, when he was a senior. It was easily the most amazing post-game interview that I have ever witnessed. The truly amazing thing was that nobody did anything to stop him.

The book says you never have the QB kneel 3 times and then punt. That strategy would have won that game. As would keeping Trevor Cobb in the game to set a (school) record for carries in a game, with two more.

True, he was not one of the Kangaroos running up the score on the all freshman, all walk-on team we fielded that day.

Watching GameDay or whatever the Saturday morning show was in 1991, one of the announcers said something like, "Rice is 2-0. If they beat Iowa State today, they'll go 8-3..." And then one of my Wiess friends jinxed it on Rice's last first down with about 3-4 minutes left (when they pulled Trevor Cobb) -- he actually said "game over." He knew better. And he knows he will never be forgiven.

In my freshman year (Fall 1966), the Owls started strong -- defeating LSU, 17-15 -- but lost three soul-crushers to UCLA, SMU and @Arkansas.

IIRC, that would be #2 in the nation UCLA, eventual SWC champ SMU, and SWC runner-up Arkansas.

Don't forget TexasU on the subject of soul-crushing losses. Down 7-6, we have the ball, first and goal, run the option, pitchout gets intercepted and returned for TD, and final score is 14-6.

Although the record was a mere 2-8, Rice was truly competitive on a national scale that year. And also 1967, at least first half of season. Then it all caved in.

I'm afraid I have to ask - who was Herman Coachman, and which Owl loss are you talking about?
